The story in short
यह पाठ "सूक्ति" (सु + उक्ति = सुन्दर वचन) का संकलन है, जो संवाद-रूप में आरम्भ होता है। आचार्य छात्रों को बताते हैं कि सूक्तियों में जीवन-मूल्य निहित होते हैं और ये हमें सन्मार्ग की ओर ले जाती हैं; इन्हें केवल पढ़ना नहीं, अपितु स्मरण करना तथा जीवन में आचरण करना चाहिए। पाठ में दस छोटी-छोटी सूक्तियाँ हैं, प्रत्येक के पदच्छेद, अन्वय तथा भावार्थ सहित — "माता भूमिः पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः" (भूमि माता है, हम उसके पुत्र); "शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम्" (शरीर ही धर्मपालन का प्रथम साधन है); "क्षणशः कणशश्चैव विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत्" (क्षण-क्षण से विद्या, कण-कण से धन सिद्ध करो); "गुणाः पूजास्थानं" (गुणों का आदर होता है, लिंग या आयु का नहीं); "मा ब्रूहि दीनं वचः" (दीन वचन मत बोलो); "यस्तु क्रियावान् पुरुषः स विद्वान्" (जो क्रियाशील है वही सच्चा विद्वान् है); "शीलं परं भूषणम्" (शील ही श्रेष्ठ आभूषण है); और शीर्षक-सूक्ति "हितं मनोहारि च दुर्लभं वचः" — हितकारी तथा मनोहर दोनों एकसाथ हो ऐसा वचन दुर्लभ है। पाठ मकार-लेखन (अनुस्वार-नियम), सूक्ति का अर्थ तथा विविध संस्कृत-ग्रन्थों (अथर्ववेद, पञ्चतन्त्र, नीतिशतक आदि) का संक्षिप्त परिचय भी देता है।
