गुरदयाल सिंह का यह संस्मरण लेखक के बचपन, स्कूली जीवन और उस समय की शिक्षा-व्यवस्था का सजीव चित्रण करता है। लेखक अपने गाँव के बचपन की यादें ताज़ा करते हैं — खेल-कूद, मित्रों के साथ मस्ती, छुट्टियों के दिन और स्कूल जाने का आरंभिक डर। उस समय अधिकांश बच्चे स्कूल नहीं जाना चाहते थे और पढ़ाई बोझ लगती थी, क्योंकि अध्यापक प्रायः कठोर दंड देते थे। पर लेखक के एक अध्यापक मास्टर प्रीतम चंद, कठोर होते हुए भी, अनुशासन और शिक्षा के सच्चे महत्त्व को समझते थे। लेखक यह भी दिखाते हैं कि उस दौर में बच्चों, विशेषकर गरीब परिवारों के बच्चों के लिए शिक्षा कितनी कठिन और दूर की बात थी। यह संस्मरण बचपन की मासूमियत, खेल और शिक्षा के अनुभवों को मधुर तथा यथार्थवादी ढंग से प्रस्तुत करता है, और बीते दिनों को ‘सपनों के-से दिन’ कहता है।
