The story in short

यशपाल की यह व्यंग्य-कथा झूठी शान और दिखावे पर करारा प्रहार करती है। लेखक रेलगाड़ी के एक डिब्बे में सफ़र करते हुए एक नवाब साहब के सामने बैठ जाते हैं। नवाब साहब के पास दो खीरे हैं, जिन्हें वे बड़े नफ़ासत से काटते, नमक-मिर्च लगाते और सूँघते हैं, पर खाते एक भी नहीं — केवल सूँघकर और देखकर ही ‘स्वाद’ ले लेते हैं और अंत में खीरे खिड़की से बाहर फेंक देते हैं। नवाब इस दिखावे से यह जताना चाहते हैं कि खीरा खाना उनकी शान के विरुद्ध है। लेखक इस घटना के माध्यम से उस झूठी कुलीनता और बनावटी शिष्टता पर व्यंग्य करते हैं जिसमें वास्तविकता से अधिक दिखावे को महत्त्व दिया जाता है। यह पाठ बिना कथानक के भी एक सशक्त व्यंग्य रच सकने की लेखक की कला को दर्शाता है।
