The story in short
प्रेमचंद की यह कहानी झूरी किसान के दो बैलों — हीरा और मोती — के गहरे भाईचारे और स्वतंत्रता के संघर्ष की मार्मिक गाथा है। झूरी इन बैलों को अपने साले गया के पास भेज देता है, पर अपमान और रूखे व्यवहार से दुखी होकर दोनों रस्सी तोड़कर घर लौट आते हैं। बार-बार उन्हें लौटाया जाता है, मारा जाता है और सूखा भूसा दिया जाता है, फिर भी वे अपना धर्म नहीं छोड़ते। एक छोटी अनाथ लड़की उन्हें रोटी खिलाकर स्नेह देती है। बैल साँड़ से वीरतापूर्वक लड़ते हैं, काँजीहौस में बंद होते हैं और भूख सहते हैं, पर दीवार तोड़कर अनेक पशुओं को मुक्त करा देते हैं। अंत में नीलाम होकर एक दढ़ियल कसाई के साथ जाते समय वे परिचित रास्ता पहचानकर सीधे झूरी के घर लौट आते हैं। कहानी पशु-प्रेम के साथ-साथ यह भी बताती है कि स्वतंत्रता सहज नहीं मिलती, उसके लिए बार-बार संघर्ष करना पड़ता है। परोक्ष रूप से यह कहानी पराधीन भारत के स्वतंत्रता-संग्राम की भावना से जुड़ी है।
