Cultural diversity emphasises:

Summary

Cultural diversity emphasises differences rather than inequalities — India is home to many communities defined by language, religion, sect, race and caste. When such diverse communities live within a single nation, competition or conflict between them can arise, especially when cultural identities are linked to economic and social inequalities or when scarce resources must be shared. Community identity is based on birth and belonging rather than choice, giving it deep emotional power; people are willing to make sacrifices for the community they identify with. The chapter distinguishes a nation from other communities and explores the tension between cultural identity and the nation-state. Two contrasting responses to diversity are assimilation (suppressing differences to forge uniformity) and integration (recognising diversity while maintaining unity); India has constitutionally chosen the path of integration and 'unity in diversity'. The chapter examines several challenges: communalism, the aggressive political use of religious identity that treats religious communities as homogeneous and antagonistic; regionalism, rooted in regional cultures, languages and demands; and the linguistic reorganisation of states, which strengthened rather than weakened national unity. It also discusses minority rights and secularism, the state's response to religious diversity. The chapter argues that diversity, though challenging, need not threaten the nation if every minority feels secure and included.
