Summary
First aid is the immediate, temporary help given to an injured or sick person before professional medical care is available, and this chapter explains its meaning, aims and importance. The aims of first aid are to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening and promote recovery. The chapter describes the qualities of a good first-aider and the contents of a first-aid kit, and gives basic first-aid procedures for common emergencies such as cuts and wounds, bleeding, burns, fractures, sprains, drowning, electric shock, fainting and snake bite. It stresses the importance of staying calm, ensuring safety, and seeking medical help quickly. The chapter also covers safety education — preventing accidents at home, in school, on the road and during sports — by following rules, using protective equipment and being alert. By learning first aid and safety, students can protect themselves and others, reduce the harm caused by accidents and act responsibly in emergencies.
