YKI testi hinta ja ilmoittautuminen 2026: Fee, Test Dates, How to Register

Checked 13 October 2026. Fees, test days and registration periods are from oph.fi, read on 13 October 2026 and again on 15 October 2026 (no date or fee had changed); the registration steps, the registration site and OPH’s 2026 notices were read on 15 October 2026. OPH can change dates, and autumn 2027 days are not yet listed. Registration for 7 November 2026 closes on 22 October 2026. Sums, day counts and date estimates are our arithmetic.

YKI testi hinta 2026: the official fee

The fee for the intermediate-level YKI test is 190 EUR. The basic-level test costs 165 EUR and the advanced-level test 216 EUR [official: oph.fi, read 13 October 2026]. The value-added tax on test fees is 0%, the payment goes to the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH), and the fee rests on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Decree on Fees (1508/2025), section 1, subsection 1, items 21 and 22 [official]. It is one national fee: OPH’s fee list makes no difference between test centres, and the money is paid to OPH, not to the centre.

YKI test levelFeeWho it is for
Basic (grades 1–2)165 EURNot enough for citizenship: the rule asks for grade 3, and a basic test cannot give it
Intermediate (grades 3–4)190 EURThe level OPH names for a citizenship application, and for satisfactory or good Finnish in a public-sector post
Advanced (grades 5–6)216 EURExcellent Finnish for a public-sector post (grade 6). Free up to three times for some graduates and students, in Finnish or Swedish only

The free tests cause confusion, so to be exact: OPH says only the advanced-level tests in Finnish and Swedish can be free, for people who have completed the Finnish matriculation examination or an equivalent foreign qualification, or a university or university of applied sciences degree in Finland or abroad, or who are studying for such a degree, and at most three times. “Basic and intermediate level YKI tests and all YKI tests in other languages are subject to a fee for everyone” [official]. Nobody sits the intermediate test for free.

Subtest days: paying for one or two subtests only

In autumn 2026 OPH began piloting subtest days for the Finnish intermediate test; its spring 2027 list also has subtest days for the Swedish intermediate test. On a normal test day all four subtests are held and you pay for all four, even if you do not complete them all. On a subtest day you register for one or two subtests, take only those, and pay only for those [official: OPH news and test-days page]. The first was 16 September 2026 (writing and listening). Three more are listed for spring 2027.

Fee per subtest on a subtest day (EUR)
Speaking84 EUR
Writing70 EUR
Listening comprehension43 EUR
Reading comprehension43 EUR

Official: oph.fi, read 13 October 2026. These prices apply only when you register for a Finnish or Swedish intermediate test in which you take certain subtests.

What those four prices add up to, in the combinations that the listed subtest days allow. The sums are our arithmetic.

What you sitSumAgainst the full test at 190 EURCitizenship pair?
Writing + listening (the 16 Sep 2026 and 12 May 2027 days)70 + 43 = 113 EUR77 EUR lessYes: listening + writing is one of the three
Speaking + reading (the 10 Mar and 2 Jun 2027 days)84 + 43 = 127 EUR63 EUR lessYes: reading + speaking is one of the three
Speaking on one subtest day, writing on another84 + 70 = 154 EUR36 EUR less, but two test days and two certificatesYes on paper: Migri says two certificates may be combined
All four subtests, bought singly over two subtest days43 + 84 + 43 + 70 = 240 EUR50 EUR moreCovers all three

One caution before you plan around a subtest day. OPH’s page on citizenship still says: “It is important that you participate in all four subtests. Otherwise, you will not be given a YKI-certificate at all. You must complete the entire examination on the same test day.” OPH’s news on subtest days says the opposite for those days: participants “will receive a YKI certificate for the test as normal”, showing the subtests taken. Both sentences were on oph.fi on 13 October 2026. We print both rather than choose. If your reason for the test is a citizenship application, ask the Finnish Immigration Service whether it accepts a subtest-day certificate before you pay. The pairs themselves are explained in YKI for Finnish citizenship.

YKI test dates: Finnish intermediate, autumn 2026 to June 2027

These are the days on which the Finnish intermediate test is held, from OPH’s list read on 13 October 2026 and again on 15 October 2026, when every date and registration period was the same. Days for other levels only (24 April 2027 basic, 22 May 2027 advanced) are left out. Registration always opens at 10:00 on the first day of the period, on the YKI registration site.

Three things in that list are easy to miss. First, the windows are short. OPH’s introduction says the registration period “is around 2 months before the test”, but its own spring 2027 list opens registration much closer: 12 days before the 16 January test and 26 to 33 days before the others (our count from the dates). The January window is four days long. Second, every Finnish test in spring 2027 is digital: taken on a computer at the test centre, with exercises that OPH says are similar to the paper test. On 7 November 2026 the digital version runs at four centres only (Finnbrit in Helsinki, Rovaniemen kansalaisopisto, Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulu in Pori, Axxell in Espoo); the registration system shows whether a sitting is digital or paper. Third, autumn 2027 is not listed yet.

OPH adds a warning of its own: many people want the Finnish intermediate test in particular, “and the places are often booked up quickly. This is why you should register as soon as the registration period begins!” [official]. The Finnish Immigration Service says the same from its side: test days in the Greater Helsinki area may fill very fast, and you can register for a test outside your home region [official: Migri, read live on 13 October 2026].

YKI testi ilmoittautuminen: step by step

OPH’s Finnish page sets out the registration in seven steps, and the YKI registration site adds how to find the test. Here they are in order, with OPH’s wording in Finnish and our English [official: oph.fi, Ilmoittautuminen YKI-testiin, and yki.opintopolku.fi, both read 15 October 2026]. Before you start, OPH asks you to find out when and at which level you need the certificate: “Selvitä ennen YKI-testiin ilmoittautumista, milloin ja miltä tasolta tarvitset todistuksen.” For citizenship that is the intermediate test (YKI for Finnish citizenship).

StepIn OPH’s words (Finnish)What it means
1. Open the registration siteMene YKI-ilmoittautumissivulleGo to yki.opintopolku.fi during the registration period. Registration opens at 10:00 on the first day; Finnish intermediate places often fill quickly.
2. Find the testEtsi testi, johon haluat ilmoittautua. On the site: choose the language and the level (both required), optionally a town, and press Hae (search). For the November 2026 tests, the search results say whether a test is digital or on paper.
3. RegisterKlikkaa painiketta, jossa lukee ”ILMOITTAUDU”.Press the button marked ILMOITTAUDU (register). You can register for only one YKI test, or its waiting list, on the same test day.
4. Identify yourselfTunnistaudu palveluun Suomi.fi-tunnuksilla. Jos et voi käyttää Suomi.fi-tunnistautumista, tunnistaudu sähköpostilla.Log in with Suomi.fi e-identification, or by email if you cannot. Only a Suomi.fi login lets you see results later in My Studyinfo.
5. Fill in your detailsTäytä tietosi ilmoittautumissivulle. Tarkista, että kaikki tiedot ovat oikein.Check every detail: after payment you cannot change the level, language, subtests, test centre, test day or participant.
6. Open the payment emailSaat sähköpostiisi viestin, jossa on maksulinkki. Viesti tulee osoitteesta noreply(a)opintopolku.fi.The payment link arrives at once from noreply@opintopolku.fi. It is valid for 1–3 days.
7. Pay by the due dateViestissä on myös tutkintomaksun viimeinen maksupäivä. Maksa maksu ajoissa, jotta voit osallistua YKI-testiin.Pay with Finnish online banking credentials or, for example, a credit card; there is no invoice. Someone else, such as an employer, may pay through the link. Your registration is confirmed when the fee is paid, and a paid registration is binding.

If the test is full: the waiting list

You can join the waiting list (jono) on the same site, during the registration period only. You get a confirmation email with a link that shows your place in the queue. If a place comes up you are told by email, the payment link is valid for one day, and you lose the place if you do not pay in time. A place can come from the waiting list up to 9 days before the test day [official: oph.fi, read 15 October 2026].

Before the test day

The test centre sends the address and the start time shortly before the test day. Bring a valid official identity card (OPH lists a passport, an identity card, an alien’s passport, a refugee travel document, a residence permit card or a Defence Forces identity card with a photo); a driving licence is not accepted. One conflict: the Jyväskylä demonstration site’s “Instructions for test-takers” say residence permit cards are not official identification (it lists a passport, an identity card, an alien’s passport, a refugee travel document and a Defence Forces card with chip and photo). Both pages read on 13 October 2026; confirm with your test centre which documents it accepts.

What changed for the YKI test in 2026: OPH’s notices

WhenWhat OPH announcedSource
1 January 2026New registration terms: a registration can no longer be moved to another date, and a fee is refunded only when all three legal conditions are met (own illness with a certificate, cancelled by 8:00 on the test morning, application within two weeks)oph.fi, Ilmoittautuminen YKI-testiin
Tests from 1 April 2026Digital YKI certificates, downloadable in My Studyinfo, for a test taken on or after 1 April 2026 by someone who gave a Finnish personal identity code; without one, or without Suomi.fi Messages, the certificate comes on paper by post (news of 26 June 2026)oph.fi news
16 September 2026The first subtest day: Finnish intermediate, writing and listening comprehension only, paying only for the subtests taken (news of 27 May 2026)oph.fi news
21 September 2026A technical error in registration for the 7 November 2026 Finnish test gave some people places although the session was full. They were moved to the waiting list in their original order and refunded; OPH aims to add places, and anyone given one pays again with a longer, seven-day payment time (news of 23 September 2026)oph.fi news
November 2026Digital YKI tests piloted at seven test centres, Finnish and Swedish intermediate only; four of them for the Finnish test of 7 November 2026. Paper tests continue everywhere else (news of 18 September 2026)oph.fi news
From the start of 2027“Suomen ja ruotsin kielen YKI-testit muuttuvat digitaalisiksi vuoden 2027 alussa” (the Finnish and Swedish YKI tests become digital at the start of 2027); every Finnish test day in spring 2027 is listed as a digital testoph.fi news of 18 September 2026; test days

The technical error affected thirteen test centres, which OPH names in its news item; if you registered for 7 November 2026 at one of them on 21 September and were told your place changed, that notice is the explanation.

Cancelling, refunds and the end of rescheduling

Since 1 January 2026 a registration can no longer be moved to another date [official]. You can cancel up to 8:00 on the morning of the test, but cancelling does not return the money by itself. OPH refunds the fee only when all three conditions are met: you cannot take part because of your own illness and can prove it with a medical certificate or a certificate from another health professional; you cancelled by 8:00 on the test morning; and you sent the refund application to OPH within two weeks of the test day [official]. OPH’s own example of what does not qualify: having already passed an earlier YKI test. You also cannot cancel single subtests; a cancellation covers the whole registration.

What this means in money (our reading of the rules above)

  • Treat the fee as spent the moment you pay. A change of plan, a work shift or a missed bus does not bring it back.
  • Being late is the same as not coming: OPH says you will not be able to take the test if you are late.
  • If you fall ill, cancel before 8:00 and get a medical certificate stating your illness (in Finnish, Swedish or English); any sick leave must continue on the test day, and the refund application goes to OPH within two weeks of the test day.

From test day to certificate

OPH says you get the certificate “around 2 months” after the test date [official]. It has also published three actual posting dates: certificates for the tests of 11 April, 25 April and 23 May 2026 were all mailed on 26 June 2026. By our count that is 76, 62 and 34 days after the test. A posted certificate can take one to two weeks more to arrive. Tests taken on or after 1 April 2026 can give a digital certificate, downloadable in My Studyinfo, if you gave a Finnish personal identity code and have activated Suomi.fi Messages; otherwise it comes on paper by post [official].

From test day to certificate: a date estimate

Choose a Finnish intermediate test day. The tool shows its registration period and estimates when the certificate could reach you.

Test days and registration periods are official (oph.fi, read 13 October 2026). OPH says the certificate comes “around 2 months” after the test date; the dates shown are our arithmetic from that sentence and from the three posting dates OPH has published (34, 62 and 76 days after the test). They are estimates, not promises.

The same estimates as a table

Test dayTwo calendar months laterRange from OPH’s posting dates (34 to 76 days)Before 1 March 2027?
7 Nov 20267 Jan 202711 Dec 2026 to 22 Jan 2027Yes, on every estimate

12 May 202712 Jul 202715 Jun to 27 Jul 2027No
2 Jun 20272 Aug 20276 Jul to 17 Aug 2027No

Why 1 March 2027 is in that table: the Finnish Immigration Service says amendments to the Citizenship Act enter into force on 1 January 2027 and, after a transition period, apply to applications submitted on or after 1 March 2027. Those applicants must also meet a new requirement for civic knowledge, normally by passing a citizenship test, in addition to the language requirement, which stays [official: Migri bulletin of 9 October 2026]. The language certificate has to exist before you apply. So for someone who has no certificate yet and hopes to apply under the current rules, the 7 November 2026 sitting is the last Finnish intermediate day whose certificate fits before March on OPH’s “around 2 months”. That is our arithmetic from two official statements, not a deadline anyone has announced, and “around” is not a promise.

Costs after the test: reassessment and a replacement certificate

If you are not satisfied with a grade you can ask for a reassessment, in which different assessors evaluate the same answers again. It costs 108 EUR per subtest, paid when you make the request, and the fee is refunded if the reassessment changes that subtest’s grade. You have 30 days from the notice that your certificate is ready. The average processing time is about three months, and the decision cannot be appealed [official]. OPH is frank about the odds: “The reassessment rarely changes the grade of a test.”

YearRequests for reassessmentGrade changed inShare (our arithmetic)
20181103 cases2.7%
20191794 cases2.2%
20202075 cases2.4%
20212535 cases2.0%
20222163 cases1.4%
202320011 cases5.5%
20241307 cases5.4%
20251287 cases5.5%
2018–20251,42345 cases3.2%

The figures cover all YKI languages and levels; OPH does not split them. A reassessment is not a second attempt: it re-reads the answers you gave. If you know why a subtest went badly, the same 108 EUR is more than the price of sitting speaking (84 EUR) or writing (70 EUR) again on a subtest day. That comparison is ours.

A replacement certificate also costs money: 55.60–65.60 EUR by post for a test taken on or after 1 April 2026, ordered from OPH, and 30 EUR for a test taken on or before 31 March 2026, ordered from the University of Jyväskylä. A digital certificate can be downloaded again at no charge whenever you want; each download carries a new electronic seal valid for one year. The certificate itself never expires [official].

Cost planner

YKI cost planner (euros)

Pick how you plan to sit the test and what else you expect to pay for. The official fees are filled in; a course price is yours to type in, because we quote no provider.

Fees from oph.fi, read 13 October 2026: intermediate test 190 EUR; single subtests 43 (listening), 84 (speaking), 43 (reading), 70 (writing); reassessment 108 EUR per subtest, refunded if it changes that grade. The sums and the comparison are our arithmetic. Travel, time off work and Migri’s own application fee are not included.

Worked examples (our arithmetic from the official fees)

PlanSumTotal in EUR
One full test190190
Full test, then one more full test190 × 2380
Full test, then speaking again on a subtest day190 + 84274
Full test, then writing again on a subtest day190 + 70260
Writing + listening on one subtest day70 + 43113
Full test and a reassessment of two subtests190 + 2 × 108406 (216 comes back if both grades change)

The third and fourth rows are the reason subtest days matter to anyone who has already sat a full test. If one subtest came back below 3, a subtest day lets you sit that one again for 43 to 84 EUR instead of paying 190 EUR for all four, provided the day offers that subtest.

Is a YKI course worth it?

Start with what OPH says, because it is unusually direct. “You do not have to pass a language course before taking the test.” The test measures how you use standard language in everyday situations, and “you can practise using standard language in work or at home”. There is no official textbook [official]. So a course is never a condition for the test, and no course is official. We quote no course prices here: providers set their own, they change, and we have not verified any against a provider’s own page.

What OPH also says is the part that should decide the question for you: the assessors do not know you. “The only thing they assess is how well you speak, write and understand what you hear and read in the test situation” [official]. Reading and listening you can check alone, because an answer is right or wrong. Speaking and writing you cannot, because they are compared with level criteria, and you are a poor judge of your own Finnish. That is where another person earns a fee, whether it is a teacher on a course, a tutor, or a Finnish-speaking colleague who is willing to correct you.

Your situationOur view
You use Finnish at work every day and your reading and listening are comfortableA course is unlikely to add much. Do timed practice on the official demonstration tasks and get two or three texts corrected by someone.
You understand a lot but rarely speak or write FinnishThis is the case for paying. Look for a course or tutor that gives you corrected writing and recorded speaking every week, not lectures about the test.
You are not yet at the grade 3 descriptions in any skillA YKI preparation course is too early. A general Finnish course first; OPH links to the Finnishcourses search engine. Consider the basic-level test only if you need a certificate at that level.
You need only one subtest more for an accepted pairSpend on that one skill. A subtest day costs 43 to 84 EUR; a course that covers all four skills pays for three you do not need.
You failed a subtest and do not know whyAsk how the criteria were applied to your test (within 14 days of the notice that the certificate is ready, by email to the address OPH gives; OPH’s page names no fee for this) before you pay for a course or a reassessment.

One number helps keep a course price in proportion: a failed attempt costs another fee and several more months: OPH says the certificate takes about two months, and after that the next sitting has to be booked, sat and assessed in its turn (the estimate is ours). If a course makes one resit unnecessary it has saved another fee (190 EUR for a full test, or 43 to 84 EUR per subtest where a subtest day offers the one you need) and a season. If it cannot say what it will correct in your speaking and writing, it probably will not. The free route is real too: OPH links to the University of Jyväskylä’s subtest descriptions and demonstration tasks, Yle’s Ykitreenit and the Institute of Adult Education in Helsinki’s exercises. A full practice task for each subtest is on our page YKI keskitaso practice by subtest.

What we could not find

Not on the official pages we read on 15 October 2026

  • Test days for autumn 2027: OPH’s list ends with spring 2027.
  • How many places each test centre has, or how many are left for a given day.
  • Whether OPH has in fact added places to the 7 November 2026 sessions hit by the registration error; its news says only that it aims to.
  • A different fee for the digital test: OPH’s fee list is per level and per subtest, and says nothing separate for digital tests.
  • Course prices: providers set their own, and we quote none.

The same test on seven printable pages

If you decide to prepare on your own, a compact reference does part of what a course handout does: the task types, the two registers, and the Finnish to start each kind of text and talk.

The YKI Finnish Intermediate revision kit is a seven-page PDF in English with the Finnish you need: the four subtests, grade 3 against grade 4, frames and three model texts for writing, fourteen speaking situations and a model talk, a method for reading and listening, sixteen grammar points and eighteen verbs with the case each one takes. Its test facts come from oph.fi; its model texts are our own, never official tasks. Page 1 is free to read in full before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the YKI test cost in 2026?

The intermediate-level test costs 190 EUR, the basic-level test 165 EUR and the advanced-level test 216 EUR, according to oph.fi read on 13 October 2026. VAT is 0%.

Is the YKI fee the same at every test centre?

OPH publishes one fee per level and the payment goes to the Finnish National Agency for Education, not to the test centre. Its fee list makes no difference between centres.

Can I take the YKI intermediate test for free?

No. OPH says only advanced-level tests in Finnish and Swedish can be free, for certain graduates and students, up to three times. Basic and intermediate tests are subject to a fee for everyone.

How much does one YKI subtest cost?

On a subtest day for the Finnish or Swedish intermediate test: listening 43 EUR, speaking 84 EUR, reading 43 EUR and writing 70 EUR.

When is the next Finnish intermediate YKI test?

On 7 November 2026, with registration from 21 September to 22 October 2026. After that: 16 January, 13 February, 10 April 2027 for all four subtests, and subtest days on 10 March, 12 May and 2 June 2027.

How do I register for the YKI test?

On the YKI registration site, yki.opintopolku.fi, during the registration period: choose the language and level, find the test, press ILMOITTAUDU, log in with Suomi.fi or by email, fill in your details and pay through the link that arrives by email within its 1–3 days.

What if the YKI test is full?

What changed in YKI registration in 2026?

Since 1 January 2026 a registration cannot be moved to another date, and the fee is refunded only for your own illness with a certificate, a cancellation by 8:00 on the test morning and an application within two weeks.

What time does YKI registration open?

At 10:00 on the first day of the registration period, on the YKI registration site. OPH says Finnish intermediate places are often booked up quickly.

Can I get my YKI fee back if I cancel?

Only if you are ill yourself and have a certificate, you cancelled by 8:00 on the test morning, and you applied to OPH within two weeks of the test day. All three conditions must be met.

Can I move my YKI registration to another date?

No. Since 1 January 2026 registrations cannot be rescheduled, and a paid registration is binding.

How long does the YKI certificate take?

OPH says around 2 months after the test date. Its three published posting dates in 2026 were 34, 62 and 76 days after the test, by our count.

How much does a YKI reassessment cost?

108 EUR per subtest, refunded if the reassessment changes that grade. In 2025 there were 128 requests and 7 changed grades.

Do I have to take a course before the YKI test?

No. OPH says you do not have to pass a language course before taking the test, and there is no official textbook.

Is the YKI test on a computer in 2027?

OPH says all Finnish language tests in spring 2027 will be taken digitally, on a computer at the test centre. You do not need your own computer.
