YKI Test in English: Complete Guide to the YKI Exam for Expats

Checked 13 October 2026. Facts are from oph.fi, the University of Jyväskylä and the Finnish Immigration Service, read on 13 October 2026. OPH can change test days; autumn 2027 days are not yet listed. Finnish tests are digital from the start of 2027. Date estimates are our arithmetic.

YKI test in English: the short answer

If you searched for the YKI test “in English”, start with the fact that settles most plans: you cannot take the Finnish YKI test in English. OPH, the Finnish National Agency for Education, states that “in all Finnish language tests, the tasks and instructions are in Finnish” [official: oph.fi, read 13 October 2026]. There is a YKI test of English, but it measures your English and proves nothing about your Finnish.

What you can get in English is everything around the test: OPH’s own pages, the registration instructions, the assessment criteria, and the certificate itself, which can be downloaded in Finnish, Swedish or English [official]. This page is the whole of the intermediate test in Finnish in one English overview, with a link at each step to the guide that goes deeper. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH), the University of Jyväskylä or the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri). Every rule here is quoted or summarised from their published pages; OPH decides everything about the test and Migri decides every citizenship application.

What the YKI test is

YKI stands for Yleiset kielitutkinnot, in English the National Certificates of Language Proficiency. It is a language test for adults, and it “is open to all”: you can take it even if you need it for no official purpose [official: oph.fi]. It measures your skills in using standard language in everyday situations where you need to understand, speak and write the language. OPH runs it; the Centre for Applied Language Studies at the University of Jyväskylä trains the assessors and supervises their work; and you sit it in person at a test centre in Finland [official].

LevelGrades it can giveCEFRFee
Basic (perustaso)1, 2 or below 1A1, A2165 EUR
Intermediate (keskitaso)3, 4 or below 3B1, B2190 EUR
Advanced (ylin taso)5, 6 or below 5C1, C2216 EUR

You choose the level when you register, and “you will only receive a grade for the level of the test that you took” [official]. So the intermediate test cannot tell you that you are at grade 2, and it cannot give you a 5. There is no overall grade either: you get a separate grade for each subtest. What each grade means, in the official wording, is in YKI-testin tasot: level 3 vs level 4.

Who needs which level is not OPH’s decision: it “does not decide what the results of the YKI test can be used for”. For Finnish citizenship the Finnish Immigration Service asks for the intermediate test. For public-sector posts OPH says satisfactory Finnish can be proven with the intermediate test at grade 3 and good Finnish at grade 4. For a place of study or another employer, ask them [official].

The four subtests

SubtestFinnish nameWhereWhat you do
Listening comprehensionPuheen ymmärtäminenUsually a language labHear several recordings (conversations, announcements, news, messages) and answer questions on main points and details
SpeakingPuhuminenUsually a language lab; your speech is recordedTake part in simulated conversations, react in given situations, give an opinion or talk about a topic. No interviewer at intermediate level
Reading comprehensionTekstin ymmärtäminenClassroomRead several texts of different lengths (messages, notices, adverts, news) and answer questions
WritingKirjoittaminenClassroomWrite three texts of different types, for example a message, an opinion text or a complaint

The question types in reading and listening are multiple choice, true/false and open-ended [official]. The topics come from nine areas that are the same at every level: I and my background, home and housing, shops and services, culture, travelling, health and wellbeing, work, the environment, society [official].

Not published, so not on this page

  • Minutes for each subtest. Only the length of the day is given.
  • The number of tasks or questions in each subtest, apart from the three texts in writing.
  • A word limit for the writing tasks.
  • The points needed for grade 3 in reading or listening.
  • A pass rate or a distribution of grades.

We looked for these on the oph.fi pages, in the framework and on the University of Jyväskylä’s pages on 13 October 2026. The demonstration tasks print an answer time for single speaking tasks, as examples.

Practice for each part: one task per subtest in YKI keskitaso practice by subtest; reading and listening sets with sixteen questions in YKI: luetun ja kuullun ymmärtäminen; speaking and writing tasks with two model answers each in YKI speaking and writing: example tasks; and four more writing tasks in YKI-testin kirjoittaminen: four model texts.

Dates and fee

These are the Finnish intermediate test days OPH lists, with their registration periods. Autumn 2027 is not yet listed.

2 Jun 2027Speaking and reading onlyDigital3–17 May 2027

Two things on that list need a comment. First, OPH’s own summary says “the registration period for the YKI test is around 2 months before the test”, yet the spring 2027 periods it lists open between 12 and 33 days before the test day (our count), and the one for 16 January is four days long [official, both on the same page]. Go by the listed dates. Second, three of the days are subtest days, on which only two subtests are offered and you pay per subtest: listening 43 EUR, speaking 84 EUR, reading 43 EUR, writing 70 EUR [official]. On a normal day you pay 190 EUR for all four even if you do not complete them all. Sums, refund rules and whether a course is worth paying for are in YKI-testin hinta: fee, test dates and course.

Your YKI timeline, counted back from the test day

Pick a Finnish intermediate test day and how many weeks of preparation you want. The tool lays out the dates that matter in order, and tells you if the study start has already passed.

Test days and registration periods are OPH’s, read on 13 October 2026; OPH can change them. The study-start date, the two-calendar-month certificate estimate and the two-week refund date are our arithmetic from OPH’s rules. Nothing you choose is stored.

The same timeline as a table

For each listed test day: when to start if you want four or eight weeks, and the two-calendar-month estimate for the certificate. All three date columns are our arithmetic from OPH’s test days.

How to register

StepWhat you doGood to know
1Go to the YKI registration site and find the test you wantRegistration always starts at 10:00. You can register for only one YKI test on the same test day
2Press REGISTER and log inWith Suomi.fi e-identification; if you cannot use it, identify yourself with your e-mail address
3Fill in your details and check themRegistration is personal; the participant’s details cannot be changed later
4Open the e-mail with the payment linkIt comes from noreply@opintopolku.fi. The link is valid for 1 to 3 days
5Pay by the due dateFinnish online banking or a card; no invoice. Someone else, such as an employer, may pay through the link
6If the test is full, join the waiting listOnly during the registration period. A place from the list comes by e-mail, and then the payment link is valid for one day

A paid registration is binding. Since 1 January 2026 it cannot be rescheduled: you cannot change the level, the language, the subtests, the test centre or the day. You can cancel until 8:00 on the morning of the test, but the fee comes back only if all three conditions are met: your own illness with a certificate, cancellation by 8:00, and an application to OPH within two weeks after the test day [official]. If you need special arrangements, for example more time because of a reading difficulty, a hearing problem or another illness or disability, OPH has a separate application; the arrangements concern taking the test, not how it is graded [official].

The test day

PointWhat OPH says
Start time and placeYour test centre sends them shortly before the test day. If nothing has come and the day is close, contact the centre
Being lateYou will not be able to take the test. On a subtest day you cannot take a subtest that has already started
Identity documentValid passport, identity card, alien’s passport, refugee travel document, residence permit card, or Defence Forces photo ID. Not a driving licence; not a picture of a document
What you getA pencil and an eraser. You may bring snacks for the breaks
What is taken awayPhone, watch, laptop, tablet and other electronic devices, for the whole day including breaks. No dictionary or study materials
WhereReading and writing in a classroom; listening and speaking usually in a language lab
CheatingThe test is disqualified and you cannot take a test in that language for the following 6 or 12 months

One conflict to know about. OPH’s list of accepted documents includes the residence permit card. The “Instructions for test-takers” on the University of Jyväskylä’s demonstration site say that residence permit cards are not official identification [official, both, read 13 October 2026]. OPH runs the test, so we follow its list; but if that card is your only document, ask your test centre in advance.

OPH’s four reminders for the day are worth learning by heart: always complete all tasks and answer all questions; check in which language you have to write the answers; use your normal speaking voice and follow the instructions; and complete all parts of the test to receive the certificate [official]. A subtest left undone or done incompletely is entered on the certificate as “ei voida arvioida”, cannot be assessed [official: framework, section 8].

Paper or computer

Until now the test has been taken with pencil and paper. On 7 November 2026 the Finnish intermediate test is digital at four pilot centres (Finnbrit in Helsinki, Rovaniemen kansalaisopisto, Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulu in Pori and Axxell in Espoo) and on paper elsewhere; the registration system shows which is which. All Finnish tests in spring 2027 are digital. You take the digital test on a computer at the test centre, you do not need your own computer, and OPH says the exercises are similar to those of the paper test [official].

Results and the certificate

“You will get your YKI certificate around 2 months after the test date” [official]. For tests taken on or after 1 April 2026 the certificate can be digital: it appears in the My Studyinfo service if you gave your Finnish personal identity code when registering and have activated Suomi.fi Messages; otherwise it is sent by post. The certificate never expires, although OPH warns that an employer may test your skills again if the certificate is old [official].

On the certificateMeaning
3 or 4 in a subtestYou passed that subtest at intermediate level (B1 or B2)
below 3You did not show the level in that subtest. It applies to that subtest only, and it is not a grade 2
ei voida arvioidaCannot be assessed: the subtest was not done or was done incompletely

If you disagree with a grade you can ask for a reassessment: 108 EUR per subtest, about three months, done by different assessors, and refunded if the grade changes. OPH’s own statistics show how rarely that happens: in 2025 there were 128 requests for reassessment, and 7 of them changed a subtest grade [official]. A reassessment reads the same answers again; it is not a second attempt.

YKI and Finnish citizenship, in brief

For a citizenship application you need the intermediate test in Finnish or Swedish and at least grade 3 in two subtests, and only three combinations are accepted: speaking + writing, listening + writing, or reading + speaking [official: OPH and the Finnish Immigration Service]. Listening + reading is not accepted however high the grades. Two separate certificates may together form an accepted pair [official: Finnish Immigration Service, read live on 13 October 2026].

Here the official pages do not fully agree, and we print both. OPH’s citizenship page says: “It is important that you participate in all four subtests. Otherwise, you will not be given a YKI-certificate at all. You must complete the entire examination on the same test day.” OPH’s test-days page and its news on subtest days say that on a subtest day you take only the subtests you register for and receive a certificate with those grades [official, both]. If you plan a citizenship application around a subtest day, confirm with the Finnish Immigration Service first. The Service also gives a piece of advice that is easy to skip: “Do not take the language test before your language skills are at the required level.” The pairs, the two-certificate rule and what changes for applications from 1 March 2027 are in Kansalaisuus ja kielitaito: the three accepted pairs.

How hard is it, and how do you prepare?

Nobody publishes a pass rate, so anyone who quotes one is not quoting OPH or the University of Jyväskylä pages we read. What is published is the standard itself: the level descriptions and the assessment criteria. Why people miss level 3, and how to avoid it compares the official level 2 and level 3 lines criterion by criterion and gives you a self-check. When you are ready to plan, the four-week YKI preparation plan turns the four subtests into a week-by-week schedule and names the material OPH links to: there is no official textbook, and you do not have to pass a course first [official].

If you want this overview in a form you can print and keep, page 1 of the kit puts the subtests, the grades, the citizenship pairs, the test days and the fee on one sheet, and that page is free to read.

The YKI Finnish Intermediate revision kit is a seven-page PDF in English with the Finnish you need: the four subtests, grade 3 against grade 4, frames and three model texts for writing, fourteen speaking situations and a model talk, a method for reading and listening, sixteen grammar points and eighteen verbs with the case each one takes. Its test facts come from oph.fi; its model texts are our own, never official tasks. Page 1 is free to read in full before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the YKI test in English?

Not the Finnish one. OPH says that in all Finnish language tests the tasks and instructions are in Finnish. There is a separate YKI test of English, which measures English skills.

What does YKI stand for?

Yleiset kielitutkinnot, in English the National Certificates of Language Proficiency. The Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH) publishes the rules and information for it.

How much does the YKI intermediate test cost?

The fee for an intermediate level test is 190 EUR. On a subtest day you pay per subtest: listening 43, speaking 84, reading 43 and writing 70 EUR.

How long is the YKI test?

The basic and intermediate tests take 5 hours, with breaks. OPH does not publish the minutes for each subtest on the pages we read.

Which YKI level do I need for Finnish citizenship?

The intermediate test in Finnish or Swedish with at least grade 3 in two subtests that form an accepted pair: speaking and writing, listening and writing, or reading and speaking.

Is YKI level 3 the same as B1?

Yes. OPH says intermediate level grade 3 corresponds to CEFR level B1 and grade 4 to B2.

How do I register for the YKI test?

On the YKI registration site during the registration period, which opens at 10:00. You log in with Suomi.fi e-identification or your e-mail, fill in your details and pay through the link sent by e-mail.

Can I change my YKI test date after paying?

No. Since 1 January 2026 a registration cannot be rescheduled. You can cancel until 8:00 on the test morning, and the fee is refunded only for your own illness with a certificate and an application within two weeks.

What ID do I need for the YKI test?

OPH lists a valid passport, identity card, alien’s passport, refugee travel document, residence permit card or Defence Forces photo ID. A driving licence is not accepted. The Jyväskylä demonstration site says residence permit cards are not accepted, so ask your centre if that is your only document.

When do I get my YKI results?

OPH says the certificate comes around 2 months after the test date. For tests from 1 April 2026 it can be a digital certificate in the My Studyinfo service.

Does the YKI certificate expire?

No. OPH says it never expires, though an employer may want to test your skills again if the certificate is old.

Is the YKI test taken on a computer?

On 7 November 2026 it is digital at four pilot centres and on paper elsewhere. All Finnish language tests in spring 2027 are digital, taken on a computer at the test centre.
