Summary

Economic activities are those that create monetary value, and over the decades their number has grown enormously, from farming and pottery to manufacturing drones and creating software. Classifying these activities helps us understand how they work and connect. Economic activities are grouped into three economic sectors. The primary sector involves activities directly dependent on nature to produce goods — agriculture, mining, fishing, raising livestock and forestry. The secondary sector transforms the outputs of the primary sector into new goods — manufacturing in factories, construction, and providing utilities like water and electricity; for example, turning grain into flour, cotton into cloth, or iron ore into steel and cars. The tertiary sector, or service sector, supports the other two by providing services — transport, banking, trade, communication, healthcare, education and more. The three sectors are interconnected and depend on each other. The story of the AMUL milk cooperative in Anand, Gujarat, shows this clearly: farmers milking cows (primary), processing milk into butter and powder in factories (secondary), and transporting and selling the products (tertiary). The making of school textbooks from tree pulp to printed books is another example where all three sectors work together.
