Summary

Unit 4 of Poorvi focuses on sportsmanship, play and well-being through three readings. The prose story 'Change of Heart' tells of Prabhat, a boy who cannot bear to lose and only plays games he is sure to win. When a relaxed, cheerful new student named Surya joins his school, Prabhat even cheats to beat him at badminton, yet feels no joy in his dishonest win. Watching Surya enjoy every game, whether he is good at it or not, Prabhat slowly realises that the real point of play is to try one's best and enjoy the moment, not just to win; he develops a true sporting spirit. The poem 'The Winner' by Georgia Heard describes children playing ball in a field until darkness falls, the cold grass aches their feet, and the game ends, so that in the end 'Night wins', a playful use of personification. The third reading, 'Yoga – A Way of Life', is an informative passage explaining that yoga, originating in ancient India and systematised by Sage Patanjali, unites mind and body and offers many benefits: it strengthens muscles, increases flexibility, calms the mind, reduces stress, boosts immunity and improves sleep. It also notes that 21st June is International Yoga Day. Together the unit teaches fairness, joy in play, and the importance of physical and mental wellness.
