The story in short

भीष्म साहनी की यह सरस कहानी एक घर में आ बसी दो गौरैयों और परिवार के बीच की रोचक घटनाओं को बच्चे की दृष्टि से प्रस्तुत करती है। घर में पहले से ही चूहे, कबूतर, चमगादड़, बिल्ली और चींटियों जैसे अनेक जीव-जंतु रहते हैं, इसलिए पिताजी इसे "सराय" कहते हैं। एक दिन दो गौरैया पंखे के गोले में घोंसला बना लेती हैं। पिताजी उन्हें भगाने के लिए ताली बजाते, कूदते, लाठी चलाते और दरवाज़े बंद करते हैं, पर गौरैया हर बार किसी न किसी रास्ते से लौट आती हैं। माँ हँसते हुए व्यंग्य करती हैं और बार-बार कहती हैं कि अब इन्होंने अंडे दे दिए होंगे, इसलिए ये नहीं जाएँगी। अंत में जब पिताजी घोंसला तोड़ने के लिए लाठी से तिनके खींचते हैं, तभी घोंसले में से नन्ही-नन्ही गौरैया चूज़ों की "चीं-चीं" सुनाई देती है। यह सुनकर पिताजी का हृदय बदल जाता है; वे चुपचाप लाठी रख देते हैं और माँ सब दरवाज़े खोल देती हैं ताकि गौरैया-माता-पिता लौटकर अपने बच्चों को चुग्गा खिला सकें। कहानी पशु-पक्षियों के घर और परिवार के प्रति लगाव तथा संवेदना का मार्मिक चित्रण है।
