Chapter 3: Mystery and Magic

Summary

Unit 3 of Poorvi is built around the joy of mystery, logic and imagination. Its main reading is the detective story “The Case of the Fifth Word”, adapted from Donald J. Sobol’s Encyclopedia Brown series. A young boy detective, called Encyclopedia (Leroy Brown), helps his father, the Chief of Police, crack a puzzle left behind by a criminal named Nolan. Nolan had hidden stolen jewellery and left a coded clue for his accomplice Davenport: four odd-looking words written on a sheet from a desk calendar. Encyclopedia notices the words stand for days of the week with the letters d-a-y dropped—Nom for Monday, Utes for Tuesday, Sweden for Wednesday and Hurts for Thursday. The missing, unwritten fifth word must therefore be “Fir”, standing for Friday. The jewellery, he reasons, is buried under a young fir tree in Nolan’s nursery—exactly where the police find it. The story shows how careful observation and logical reasoning can solve a mystery that looks impossible at first. The unit also includes imaginative pieces such as “The Magic Brush of Dreams” and “Spectacular Wonders”, extending the theme of wonder, creativity and curiosity. Through codes, clues and magical ideas, the unit trains students to read closely, reason step by step and enjoy puzzles.
