Chapter 1: Wit and Wisdom

Summary

Unit 1 of Poorvi celebrates humour, intelligence and tact through the world of King Krishnadeva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire and his famously witty court poet, Tenali Rama. The main prose reading, “The Wit that Won Hearts”, retells how a small misunderstanding nearly broke the bond between the king and his queen, Thirumalambal. The king had recited a new poem to the tired queen, and when she yawned several times out of exhaustion he assumed she was insulting his work and stopped speaking to her. Heartbroken, the queen sought help from Tenali Rama. In open court Rama cleverly compared a poet to a farmer sowing seeds, then asked whether anyone could sow—or indeed live—without ever yawning. When even the king yawned, the whole court laughed and the king realised that yawning is as natural as breathing and not a mark of disrespect. He apologised to the queen, their bond was restored, and Rama was rewarded. The unit also includes the humorous poem “A Concrete Example” by Reginald Arkell, about Mrs. Jones and her unusual garden of stones. Together the readings show how wit, observation and gentle humour can resolve conflicts and reveal deeper truths about people.
