Summary
Unit 1 of Poorvi gathers three short pieces that carry the timeless lessons of fables and folk tales. The main prose reading, 'A Bottle of Dew' by Sudha Murty, tells of Rama Natha, a rich landlord who wastes his time and money searching for a magic potion that can turn objects into gold. A wise sage named Mahipati advises him to plant banana trees and patiently collect five litres of morning dew with his own hands. After six years of hard work, Rama Natha finds that his real wealth came not from magic but from the plantation he built and the bananas his wife sold; the sage reveals that honest labour, not a potion, creates wealth. The unit also includes the poem 'The Raven and the Fox' by Jean de La Fontaine, in which a clever fox flatters a proud raven into singing, making him drop the food in his beak, teaching readers not to be fooled by sweet words or empty pride. The third piece, 'Rama to the Rescue' from Amar Chitra Katha, is a comic-style tale in which a clever husband and wife trap a thief by quietly calling out to the village kotwal named Rama. Together the readings highlight wisdom, hard work, humility and quick thinking. Refer to the illustration in the NCERT textbook.
