Updates as of August 31, 2026

Under official CBSE circular Acad-49/2026 (dated July 10, 2026), the Class 6 batch of 2026-27 onward must study three languages with at least two being Bhartiya Bhashas, and this batch will be the first to face an actual CBSE board examination in the third language (R3) once it reaches Class 10, unlike older batches who only get an internal school-based R3 assessment.

The same circular confirms that dedicated third-language (R3) textbooks for Class 6, covering all 22 scheduled Bhartiya Bhashas, are being made available on the NCERT website (ncert.nic.in) to support schools rolling out the new language scheme this session.

Class 6 is now taught from a fully revised NCERT textbook set aligned to NCF-SE 2023 (English: Poorvi, Hindi: Malhar, Sanskrit: Deepakam, Maths: Ganita Prakash, Science: Curiosity, Social Science: Exploring Society: India and Beyond), with some chapters dropped and new ones added compared to the pre-2026-27 books.

CBSE has introduced a third language, R3, in Class VI from session 2026-27 under its new Scheme of Studies, notified by Circular Acad-17/2026 dated April 9, 2026 and followed by a compliance circular, Acad-25/2026. Schools were directed to begin teaching the third language from July 1, 2026 without fail.

In its three-language guidelines dated June 29, 2026, CBSE states that for the Class VI 2026-27 batch two of the three languages must be Bhartiya Bhashas, and the third language will become a board-examination subject when this batch reaches Class X. Class VI R3 textbooks are available in all 22 scheduled Indian languages on the NCERT website.

CBSE launched a Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence curriculum for Classes III to VIII on April 1, 2026 through Circular Acad-15/2026, effective in all affiliated schools from session 2026-27. It is internally assessed and builds logical reasoning, pattern recognition, algorithmic thinking, digital literacy and ethical use of technology.
