Summary

Unit 5 of Poorvi celebrates India's rich culture, art and traditions through three readings. The prose piece 'Kalakritiyon ka Bharat' is set during an 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' programme, where children from different states share their folk arts on a video call: Aakansha describes Aipan folk art from Uttarakhand made with rice-flour paste; Priyaranjan explains the 4000-year-old Dhokra metal craft of Odisha; Chitra tells of coconut-shell craft from Kerala; and Balamurali describes the 400-year-old wooden Kondapalli toys of Andhra Pradesh. The piece highlights India's unity in diversity. The poem 'The Kites' by Daphne Lister captures a child's wish to be light as air and sail up on a kite, looking down over parks and rooftops, using simile and alliteration. The third reading, 'Ila Sachani: Embroidering Dreams with her Feet', is the inspiring true story of Ila Sachani from Gujarat, who was born without the use of her hands but, encouraged by her mother and grandmother, learnt the traditional Kathiawar embroidery using her feet. Through determination and hard work she became a celebrated artist who won many awards, including the President's Medal, proving that challenges can be turned into victories. Together the unit teaches pride in India's cultural heritage, creativity and the power of perseverance. Refer to the illustration in the NCERT textbook.
