Chapter 1: The Wonderful World of ScienceClass 6 Science — summary, notes, extra questions & NCERT solutions
Summary
This opening chapter welcomes Grade 6 learners to science, describing it as a way of thinking, observing, and doing things in order to understand the world and uncover the secrets of the universe. It explains that the single most important quality for a young scientist is curiosity — the very word that gives the book its title. Science, the chapter says, is everywhere, from tiny grains of sand to massive mountains, from the depths of the ocean to the vastness of outer space, and even in the kitchen or the playground. It compares science to a giant, never-ending jigsaw puzzle in which every new discovery adds a piece, raises fresh questions, and sometimes shows that an earlier idea must be corrected. The chapter previews the journey ahead: studying planet Earth and the amazing variety of life on it, exploring food and the materials around us, understanding water and why it rains, and learning how to measure how hot or cold things are, before looking beyond Earth at the Sun, Moon, and stars. A central theme is the scientific method, illustrated through the everyday example of a pen that stops writing: we observe a problem, wonder and ask a question, guess a possible answer, test the guess through experiments or observations, and analyse the results. Anyone who follows these steps — a cook, a bicycle repairer, or an electrician — is working like a scientist. The chapter ends by reminding students that science is rarely done alone, that they need not find every answer in Grade 6, and that joyful exploration and never-ending wonder are what the adventure is all about.
