Academic records / Every result has a formula

Your semesters.
One clear calculation.

Convert CGPA with a visible rule, combine credit-weighted semesters, and find the future average your percentage target requires.

CGPA ↔ percentageSGPA → CGPACredits and quality points
A brass balance weighing ivory semester blocks beside a sage progress arc

A 10-point scale does not identify a percentage rule. VTU’s older specified schemes and its BE/BTech 2022 regulations use different formulas. The Delhi University preset is limited to final Grand CGPA under UGCF 2022. Verify your scheme before using a result on an application.

01 / Used by every section below

Choose the rule that actually applies

Points, not a percentage; every semester must use this scale

Mathematical estimate only; not an institutional equivalence.

Percentage estimate = GPA ÷ scale maximum × 100. This proportion does not establish an institution’s official grade-to-marks equivalence.

Percentage estimate = 10 × points + 0

Scale: 0–10. Formula scope: Mathematical estimate only; not an institutional equivalence. Displayed decimals do not change the calculation precision.

02 / Forward calculation or algebraic inverse

CGPA, SGPA or GPA to percentage

Proportional percentage estimate

82%

8.2 points × 10 + 0 = 82%.

This is a mathematical proportion. Use an institutional rule for an official conversion.

03 / Same scale, explicit eligible credits

Combine SGPA into a credit-weighted CGPA

Enter each semester’s eligible credits and SGPA, or its actual quality-point total (sum of course credits × grade points). All rows must be complete. Use the same grading scale, resolve repeats and excluded courses under your own rules, and enter up to 40 semesters.

Semester 1

Rounded recorded SGPA can make the aggregate approximate

160 quality points ÷ 20 credits = 8 semester GPA.

Semester 2

Rounded recorded SGPA can make the aggregate approximate

216 quality points ÷ 24 credits = 9 semester GPA.

Credit-weighted CGPA on your 10-point scale

8.5455

376 total quality points ÷ 44 eligible credits.

At least one row uses a recorded SGPA. If it was rounded, this aggregate is an approximation to the underlying course-level CGPA.

Proportional percentage estimate: 85.45%. The displayed percentage uses the unrounded aggregate.

A final-CGPA preset does not turn a partial semester total into a completed degree result. Use the correct final record and eligible credits.

04 / Continuous arithmetic planning

What future average meets a percentage target?

This assumes the same grading scale, eligible credits and linear formula throughout. It does not model repeat-grade replacement, discretely available grades, exclusions or programme completion. For DU’s preset, the projected total must represent the final Grand CGPA.

Required future average

9.5 / 10

Target percentage 85% corresponds algebraically to 8.5 CGPA. The unrounded required future average is 9.5.

With future average 0–10, projected CGPA ranges from 5.333333 to 8.666667; the formula yields 53.3333% to 86.6667%. Percentages outside 0–100 are flagged as outside the formula’s meaningful range, not clipped.

The displayed average is rounded for reading. Aim above the threshold if your available grades or official rounding rules require it; meeting this arithmetic target does not guarantee the reported result.

Why formula and credit weight both matter

One CGPA, two verified VTU rules

A CGPA of 8.20 gives 82.0% under the BE/BTech 2022 rule (×10), and 74.5% under the formula explicitly limited to 2015, 2017 and 2018 ((CGPA − 0.75) ×10).

These are scheme-specific arithmetic results. You cannot choose between them based on which percentage looks better.

Equal semesters are not equal weights

20 credits at SGPA 8 contribute 160 quality points. 24 credits at SGPA 9 contribute 216. CGPA = (160 + 216) ÷ (20 + 24) = 8.545454….

The simple average 8.5 assigns both semesters equal weight. It is only valid when their eligible credit totals match.

Rounded SGPA versus actual totals

If actual semester quality points are 167.4 for 20 credits and 214.8 for 24, the aggregate is 382.2 ÷44 = 8.686363…. Enter actual totals when available to avoid starting from rounded semester GPAs.

Changing a row to quality-point mode clears its value so a recorded SGPA is not mistaken for an actual point total.

Inverse and future target

For percentage = a × CGPA + b, target CGPA = (percentage − b) ÷ a. Required future average = [target CGPA × (completed + future credits) − current CGPA × completed credits] ÷ future credits.

At current CGPA 8 over 80 credits, with 40 future credits, reaching 85% under ×10 needs a future average of 9.5. The largest possible final CGPA is 8.666666….

Check the record before using the result

  1. Identify your institution, programme, grading scale and regulation scheme.
  2. Read whether the conversion rule covers final CGPA, semester SGPA or a specific qualification.
  3. Use the official eligible credits; resolve failed courses, repeats and excluded subjects before entering a semester total.
  4. Prefer actual course-derived quality points over already rounded SGPA when available.
  5. Follow the institution’s prescribed reporting and rounding rules on the final transcript.
  6. Use an official conversion certificate if the receiving institution requests one.

The calculator accepts scale maxima from 1 to 20 for mathematical and custom calculations. This range is a software input limit, not a claim that every such scale is recognized. A percentage alone does not determine division, pass status, degree completion or admission eligibility.

CGPA, SGPA and percentage FAQs

Is there one universal CGPA-to-percentage formula?

No. Institutions and schemes specify different rules. A proportional scale estimate is arithmetic, not an official equivalence. Select a scheme-specific rule only after checking your transcript and applicable regulations.

Is CGPA multiplied by 9.5 always correct?

No. A multiplier of 9.5 belongs only to a rule that actually specifies it. You may enter it as a verified custom formula, but this page does not apply it universally.

Which VTU formula should I use?

The official VTU page limits (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 to the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes. The BE/BTech 2022 regulations, clause 22OB6.7, instead permit CGPA × 10 for employment and higher studies. Check your scheme; do not choose the larger result.

Which Delhi University formula is included?

The included preset is for final Grand CGPA under DU UGCF 2022, using clause 10 of the 10 February 2023 notification: Grand CGPA × 10. It is not a rule for every DU programme, older scheme or individual semester.

Can I convert SGPA to percentage with a CGPA preset?

The sourced presets here apply to CGPA or final Grand CGPA. Direct SGPA/GPA conversion is blocked with those presets. For SGPA, use a verified rule that applies to semester results, or the clearly labelled mathematical estimate.

How do I calculate CGPA from several SGPAs?

Multiply each semester SGPA by its eligible semester credits, add these products and divide by the total credits. This assumes a common grading scale and that your institution includes those credits and courses. Simple averaging works only when credit totals are equal.

What if the semester SGPAs are already rounded?

An aggregate based on rounded semester SGPAs can differ from the official course-level CGPA. Where your record provides actual quality-point totals, enter those instead. The tool preserves calculation precision and rounds only the displayed values.

What are quality points?

A semester quality-point total is the sum of each included course’s credit units multiplied by its grade points. It is not a percentage or the semester SGPA itself. Divide that total by the eligible credits to get the semester GPA.

Can I reverse a percentage to CGPA?

Yes, as an algebraic inverse of your selected linear formula: CGPA = (percentage − offset) ÷ multiplier. This does not reconstruct grades or prove an institution recognizes that inverse. Values outside the grading scale are flagged rather than clipped.

What does the target planner assume?

It assumes all entered completed and future credits count on the same grading scale, with an unchanged linear percentage rule. It finds a continuous required future average. Retakes, exclusions, discrete grades, rounding and programme completion rules can change the official outcome.

Does the result prove I passed or qualify for admission?

No. Percentages do not establish pass status, division, degree completion or application eligibility. Use the official transcript, conversion certificate and the receiving institution’s requirements.

Are entries uploaded, and what does the CSV contain?

Calculator entries stay in this page’s memory and reset on reload; usual site analytics still apply. The downloaded CSV includes semester inputs, credits, quality points, aggregate CGPA and the exact formula settings and scope. A mathematical estimate is labelled as such.
