गोपालकृष्ण कौल की यह कविता वर्षा-ऋतु के आगमन और पहली बूँद के धरती पर गिरने के अद्भुत दृश्य का सजीव चित्रण करती है। पावस के पहले ही दिन जब आकाश से पहली बूँद धरती पर आती है, तो सूखी धरती मानो नया जीवन पा लेती है। बीज से अंकुर फूट पड़ता है और धरती हरी दूब के रूप में पुलककर मुस्कुरा उठती है। कवि बादलों को आकाश में उड़ता हुआ सागर बताते हैं जिसने बिजली के सुनहरे पंख लगा लिए हैं; ये बादल नगाड़े बजाकर धरती की तरुणाई जगा रहे हैं। नीला आकाश आँखों जैसा और काले बादल काली पुतली जैसे लगते हैं, जो करुणा से भरे आँसू (वर्षा) बहाकर धरती की चिरकाल से लगी प्यास बुझा देते हैं। इस वर्षा से बूढ़ी धरती फिर से शस्य-श्यामला अर्थात हरी-भरी और फसलों से लदी बनने को ललचा उठती है। पूरी कविता में मानवीकरण, सुंदर बिंब और अलंकारिक भाषा के माध्यम से प्रकृति के सौंदर्य और वर्षा के महत्व को रोचक ढंग से दिखाया गया है।
