Summary
A social institution is a set of norms, beliefs, values and role-relationships that works according to established rules and both constrains and enables individuals. The chapter introduces five central institutions and shows how functionalist and conflict perspectives explain them differently — the former seeing institutions as meeting general social needs, the latter as serving dominant sections of society. The family, marriage and kinship appear most "natural" yet vary enormously: there are matrilocal and patrilocal residence, patriarchal and matriarchal authority, nuclear and joint and female-headed households, and forms of marriage including monogamy, serial monogamy, polygyny and polyandry, governed by rules of endogamy and exogamy. Work and economic life range from paid employment to unpaid and informal-economy work; modern industry brought a complex division of labour, the separation of work from home, factory production, assembly lines and, more recently, flexible and decentralised production within global supply chains. Political institutions distribute power and authority; the modern state is defined by sovereignty, citizenship and nationalism, and citizenship carries civil, political and social rights linked to the welfare state. Religion is studied empirically and comparatively, through symbols, rituals and a community of believers, distinguishing the sacred from the profane, with Weber's thesis linking Protestant ethics to capitalism. Education, formal and informal, transmits a society's heritage; for functionalists it renews social structure and selects individuals for roles, while critics show it can reproduce inequality through caste, class and gender.
