A Triumph of Surgery — Class 10 English
Chapter 1: A Triumph of Surgery
Summary
Written by James Herriot, this humorous story is about a small pet dog named Tricki and his over-indulgent owner, Mrs Pumphrey. Out of excessive love, Mrs Pumphrey feeds Tricki rich food, cream cakes and chocolates, and gives him no exercise, until he becomes hugely fat, listless and ill. Alarmed, she calls the narrator, Dr Herriot, a veterinary surgeon, who realises the dog is simply over-fed and pampered. He takes Tricki to his surgery, where, far from any “surgery,” he simply withholds the rich food, gives the dog only water at first and then a normal diet, and lets him run and play with the other dogs. Within days Tricki recovers completely, becoming healthy, active and happy. Mrs Pumphrey, overjoyed and grateful, calls his recovery “a triumph of surgery,” never realising that proper diet and exercise, not any operation, had cured him. The story gently mocks the harm of over-indulgence and pampering.
