SSC CGL 2026 Vacancy: All 10,731 Posts by Department and Category

Checked 26 September 2026. From SSC’s tentative vacancies as on 24.09.2026, compared with the CGLE 2024 and 2025 final vacancies and final-result tables. SSC’s footnote: “Final vacancies may vary from the tentative vacancies.”

SSC published the CGL 2026 tentative vacancies on 24 September 2026: 10,731 vacancies in 59 rows, from 2,366 Inspectors in CBIC down to a single Assistant in the Ministry of Textiles. The list is the most useful document of the cycle, because the post you end up in depends on the vacancies that exist for it — and the mix has changed sharply. Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant, the biggest post of 2024, has none. Office Superintendent in CBDT, 44% of the 2025 list, has 426. The Level-8 audit and accounts posts return with 1,521. This guide sets out every row.

The nine rows in the chart hold 77% of the list (8,266 of 10,731 — our arithmetic). Inspector (Central Excise) alone is 22% (our arithmetic) — and it is a post with physical standards and marked unsuitable for colour-blind candidates, so it is not open to everyone who clears the cut-off. At the other end, 24 of the 59 rows have ten seats or fewer; the Upper Division Clerk and Assistant rows scattered across small ministries rarely matter for the cut-off but can matter to an individual preference list.

2024 and 2025: the vacancy column of each post’s table in SSC’s final-result write-ups (12.03.2025 and 14.05.2026) — our extraction — and, for Office Superintendent, the CGLE 2025 final vacancy list (row 33). 2026: tentative list 24.09.2026.

The swings are department decisions, not trends: SSC’s notice says it “does not have any role in deciding the number of vacancies” of any department. What they tell a candidate is practical. A post with many vacancies tends to close at a lower last-selected mark — in 2025 Office Superintendent, with 6,626 seats, closed at UR 317, below every Level-7 post (our extraction from SSC’s final-result tables; the full post table is in the cut-off guide of this series) — so the 2026 mix — more Inspectors, far fewer Office Superintendents — will move the marks needed for each post. That is why the cut-off guide in this series compares the order of posts, not just the numbers.

Level 8 is back: the AAO and AAcO rows

The three C&AG rows at the top of the list are new for 2026: Assistant Audit Officer (Central Cadre) 513, Assistant Audit Officer (State Cadre) 504 and Assistant Accounts Officer (State Cadre) 504. They pay Level 8 (₹47,600–1,51,100), are Group B gazetted, and need a separate Tier-II Paper-III. The state-cadre seats are split state by state, each needing a Matriculation-level certificate in the state’s language; SSC attached that split as two scanned annexures. They were listed in CGL 2023, with the same Paper-III, but C&AG withdrew all 556 of its vacancies — including every AAO post — between the final list of 16 November and the revised list of 30 November 2023, and the posts were absent from the 2024 and 2025 notices. The AAO and JSO guide has the state-by-state table.

Practise it, don't just read it

Seats decide which posts are realistic, but the Tier-II score decides the rank. The SSC CGL quizzes cover reading comprehension and the statistics topics of Paper-II.

The ProSyllabus SSC CGL library has topic quizzes on reading comprehension and on the Paper-II statistics topics — index numbers, time series, analysis of variance and statistical inference — the first quiz is free.
