Checked 26 September 2026. From the CGLE 2026 notice (paras 2, 4, 5, 8, 10), the re-opening notice of 23.06.2026 and the CGLE 2024/2025 notices and 25.06.2025 corrigendum for comparison. Eligibility is checked at document verification.
SSC CGL has one exam but several sets of eligibility rules, because each post keeps its own recruitment rules. The age limit alone comes in four bands — 18–27, 18–30, 20–30 and 18–32 — all counted on 1 August 2026, and three posts add degree conditions of their own: Junior Statistical Officer, Statistical Investigator Grade-II and the Level-8 audit and accounts posts. A candidate can be eligible for some CGL posts and not others, and the application does not stop anyone from choosing a post they cannot hold. This guide sets out the rules from the 2026 notice, with a checker for the age bands.
CGLE 2026 notice.
Where other pages get this wrong
The 18–32 age band applies only to Junior Statistical Officer, and the 20–30 band to ASO in CSS, Railways, MEA, AFHQ and Sub-Inspector in CBI — no Inspector post.
Commonly published instead: “Age 18 to 32 years” for most CGL posts and “20–30 years for certain inspector roles”.
CGLE 2026 notice, para 2 (age limit printed against every post) and para 5.1.

SSC CGL 2026: which age bands am I inside?
CGLE 2026 notice, paras 5.1–5.2: age on 01-08-2026. Bands: 18–27 (Group C posts: Auditor, Accountant, UDC/SSA, Tax Assistant, SI CBN and similar), 18–30 (most Group B posts incl. AAO), 20–30 (ASO in CSS, Railways, MEA, AFHQ; SI CBI), 18–32 (Junior Statistical Officer only). Relaxation: SC/ST 5, OBC 3, PwBD 10 (OBC 13, SC/ST 15) years; Group C only: Central Govt employees up to 40 (SC/ST 45), widows/divorced/separated women up to 35 (SC/ST 40). Ex-servicemen (3 years after deducting service) and defence personnel disabled in hostilities (3 years; SC/ST 8) are not modelled. The tool applies the most favourable single rule.
Age relaxation
| Category | Relaxation beyond the upper limit |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| PwBD / PwBD (OBC) / PwBD (SC-ST) | 10 / 13 / 15 years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service from actual age on 01.08.2026 |
| Defence personnel disabled in hostilities (SC/ST) | 3 years (8 years) |
| Group C only: Central Govt civilian employees, 3+ years’ regular service (SC/ST) | Up to 40 years (45) |
| Group C only: widows, divorced or judicially separated women, not remarried (SC/ST) | Up to 35 years (40) |
CGLE 2026 notice para 5.2. EWS has no age relaxation. The Group C relaxations apply to the 18–27 posts only.
The re-opening of applications changed one date. SSC’s notice of 23 June 2026 says that wherever the closing date was “a crucial date for ascertaining eligibility” — the three years of service a Central Government employee needs, for example — it is now 25 June 2026, not 22 June. The notice’s ex-servicemen clause (para 5.6) still prints the one-year window as ending “22-06-2027”; on the re-opening notice’s logic it would run from 25 June 2026 — our reading, which SSC has not spelt out.
Degree rules by post
| Post | Qualification by 01.08.2026 |
|---|---|
| All posts (unless below) | Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent |
| Junior Statistical Officer | Bachelor’s in any subject with at least 60% in Mathematics in Class 12, OR a Bachelor’s with Statistics as one of the subjects |
| Statistical Investigator Grade-II | Bachelor’s in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Demography, Population Studies, Operation Research, IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Technology, Computer Application, Data Science or AI |
| AAO (Central Cadre) | Bachelor’s; desirable: CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, MBS, MBA (Finance) or M.Business Economics; must pass the SAS exam during probation |
| AAO / AAcO (State Cadre) | As above, plus proficiency in the state’s regional/official language at matriculation level, shown by a certificate at the level of the Secondary School Examination from a recognised State/Central Board |
CGLE 2026 notice paras 8.1–8.4. Final-year students may apply, but the result must be declared by 01.08.2026 — “mere processing” does not count (paras 8.5, 8.8). Distance-mode degrees count only if the university had UGC-DEB approval for that period (para 8.6).
Statistical Investigator: the rule that changed twice
Many pages still say SI Grade-II needs “Statistics in all three years”. That was the 2024 wording, and the first 2025 notice’s. A corrigendum of 25 June 2025 replaced it with a list of degree subjects, and the 2026 notice extends that list to thirteen by adding Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Computer Technology. The Junior Statistical Officer rule is different again: any Bachelor’s works if you scored 60% in Class 12 Mathematics.
| Notice | SI Gr-II qualification |
|---|---|
| CGLE 2024 and CGLE 2025 (09.06.2025) | Bachelor’s with Statistics in all years (Part I, II and III, or all six semesters) |
| Corrigendum 25.06.2025 | Bachelor’s in Statistics / Mathematics / Economics / Demography / Population Studies / Operation Research / IT / Computer Application / Data Science / AI |
| CGLE 2026 (21.05.2026) | The same ten, plus Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Computer Technology |
CGLE 2024 notice para 8.2; CGLE 2025 notice para 8.2.1 and corrigendum 25.06.2025; CGLE 2026 notice para 8.3.1.

CGLE 2026 notice paras 4, 5.4, 10, 13.8.1, 16.22–16.23 and Annexures XV–XVI.
One consequence is easy to miss. SSC allots posts by merit and preference, and “once a post is allotted, no change of posts will be made … due to non-fulfilment of any post specific requirements of physical/ medical/ educational standards”. A candidate who ranks, say, Statistical Investigator first without the right degree, or a CBIC Inspector post without meeting the height rule, can lose candidature altogether rather than slide to the next preference. Eligibility is not checked when you choose; it is checked when it is too late to choose again.
The age window has also moved a year every cycle. For the 18–27 band, CGL 2024 took candidates born 02-08-1997 to 01-08-2006 and CGL 2025 took 02-08-1998 to 01-08-2007; 2026 takes 02-08-1999 to 01-08-2008. Anyone born between 2 August 1998 and 1 August 1999, with no relaxation, was inside the Group C band in 2025 and is outside it now — but is still inside the 18–30 band for most Group B posts.
| Cycle | Age date | 18–27 band: born between |
|---|---|---|
| CGL 2024 | 01-08-2024 | 02-08-1997 and 01-08-2006 |
| CGL 2025 | 01-08-2025 | 02-08-1998 and 01-08-2007 |
| CGL 2026 | 01-08-2026 | 02-08-1999 and 01-08-2008 |

Practise it, don't just read it
Eligibility decides which posts you may list; the Tier-II score decides which you get. Statistics aspirants can try the Paper-II topic quizzes — index numbers, time series, ANOVA and statistical inference.
The ProSyllabus SSC CGL library has topic quizzes on reading comprehension and on the Paper-II statistics topics — index numbers, time series, analysis of variance and statistical inference — the first quiz is free.
