RRB Office Assistant vs IBPS Clerk 2026: Age, Pattern, Seats and Dates

Checked 29 September 2026. From the CRP RRBs-XV notification (01.09.2026) and corrigenda, the CRP CSA-XVI notification (01.08.2026) and corrigenda (including the vacancy update of 29.09.2026), and the IBPS tentative calendar 2026-27 (16.01.2026). Exam dates are tentative until call letters.

The IBPS RRB Office Assistant and IBPS Clerk exams are often compared, and many candidates are eligible for both — the two share a conducting body, a fee, several tested areas and, in 2026, a season. They are not the same exam. The employer, the minimum age, the length of the Preliminary, the English paper, the language rule and the vacancy count all differ. This guide puts the two 2026 notifications side by side, row by row, and then lays both calendars on one line so you can see what the next four months look like.

Where other pages get this wrong

The RRB Office Assistant Mains month is not settled: IBPS’s own documents give three answers.

Commonly published instead: Pages printing a single definite Mains date as if announced.

The notification says “December, 2026/ February, 2027”; the window notification says “December, 2026 / January, 2027”; the IBPS tentative calendar of 16.01.2026 says 30 January 2027. Treat 30 January 2027 as the working date until the call letter.

CRP RRBs-XV notification dated 01.09.2026, corrigendum 21.09.2026 and Annexure I as on 25.09.2026; CRP CSA-XVI notification dated 01.08.2026, its extension corrigendum and its vacancy corrigendum dated 29.09.2026 with the updated Annexure I (official). The Clerk total of 11,663 is our sum of the 37 State/UT totals in the updated Annexure I; the same sum was 11,403 at notification, and the only change was 260 more Bank of Baroda seats.

The age row is the one that decides eligibility for the youngest candidates. A graduate born between 2 August 2006 and 1 September 2008 could apply for RRB Office Assistant but was too young for IBPS Clerk (our reading of the two windows; the upper limits are also on slightly different dates). The degree row matters for final-year students: IBPS Clerk wanted the result by 21 August 2026, RRB Office Assistant by 21 September 2026.

Which of the two were you eligible for? (age and degree date)

Age: RRB OA 18–28 on 01.09.2026 (born 02.09.1998 – 01.09.2008); IBPS Clerk 20–28 on 01.08.2026 (born 02.08.1998 – 01.08.2006). Upper-age relaxation modelled: OBC 3, SC/ST 5 years (PwBD, ex-servicemen and widow relaxations not modelled). Degree: result declared on or before 21.08.2026 (Clerk) and 21.09.2026 (RRB OA), as printed in each notification. The RRB corrigendum of 21.09.2026 extended only registration and fee payment to 27.09.2026 and says all other terms remain unchanged, so a result declared 22–27.09.2026 is after the RRB cut-off on the notification’s wording. Registration has closed for both — this explains your position; it cannot reopen an application.

What transfers from one exam to the other

Reasoning and Numerical Ability are in both Preliminaries and both Mains, so preparation for one carries straight over. The differences are English and the weighting. IBPS Clerk has an English test in the Preliminary and makes English compulsory in the Mains; RRB Office Assistant has no English in the Preliminary and lets you choose Hindi instead of English in the Mains. RRB Office Assistant has a separate 20-mark Computer Knowledge test; IBPS Clerk has none by that name. And the marks are split differently.

IBPS Clerk (60 + 50 of 200)55%

From the two notifications’ Mains tables. Both exams put at least half the final-merit marks on the two sections you already practise for both Preliminaries.

One calendar, two exams

The IBPS tentative calendar of 16 January 2026 places the two exams so that they do not clash. IBPS Clerk comes first; RRB Office Assistant Prelims falls between the Clerk Prelims and the Clerk Mains; the RRB Mains comes last. If you also applied for RRB Officer Scale I, its dates sit inside the same window.

Feb/Mar 2027RRB Office Assistant provisional allotment (notification)—

IBPS Tentative Calendar 2026-27 dated 16.01.2026 (official); allotment month from the CRP RRBs-XV notification. Day counts are our arithmetic to the first day of each exam.

Read as a sequence, the plan almost writes itself. Until 10 October the Clerk Prelims is the priority, and it includes English. From 12 October to 6 December — 55 days, our count — the target is the RRB Office Assistant Prelims, which is Reasoning and Numerical only, with less time per question than the Clerk Prelims gives for Numerical (30 seconds against about 34, our arithmetic). The 14 days between the last RRB Prelims date and the Clerk Mains on 27 December are for the Clerk Mains, which again carries English and Financial Awareness. The 34 days from 27 December to 30 January are for the RRB Mains, with its 20-mark Computer test and the English-or-Hindi choice.

Hours to RRB Office Assistant Prelims, split by marks

Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.

The planner splits your hours in proportion to the marks, which in the RRB Preliminary are equal. If your mocks show one section much weaker than the other, shift the split — remember that the Preliminary needs a minimum in both tests, so a strong Reasoning score cannot carry a failed Numerical test. The day count runs from now to the start (00:00 IST) of the exam day you pick, so it matches the calendar-day counts in the table; your exact date and shift come on the call letter, and the three dates above are the calendar’s window.

Which one matters more for you

There is no single answer, but the documents give some facts to weigh. IBPS Clerk has more seats in total (11,663 against 8,222; Clerk figure our sum of its Annexure I as updated 29.09.2026) and places you in a public sector bank. RRB Office Assistant offers the Hindi option in the Mains, a lower minimum age, no English at all in the Preliminary, and a posting within one State’s rural bank, with a language rule based on school study rather than a separate test. If your English is your weakest section, the RRB route asks less of it; and if your State’s RRB seats fell from 2025 to 2026 — Rajasthan from 1,725 to 225, Karnataka from 800 to 279, Tamil Nadu from 468 to 244 (official, CRP RRBs-XIV and XV vacancy tables) — compare that with the Clerk seats for the same State in the CSA-XVI Annexure I. Seat counts alone do not tell you how many candidates will compete for them, so check both State tables before deciding where to spend the extra hour.
