RRB Office Assistant: Prelims-to-Mains Revision System

Checked 2 October 2026. The 2026-27 calendar dates are tentative. IBPS may modify the examination structure; check the current call letter and information handout before each stage. This guide does not predict cutoffs.

A plan for IBPS RRB Office Assistant (Multipurpose), often searched as “RRB Clerk”, starts with an awkward fact: the 45-minute preliminary has only Reasoning and Numerical Ability, but the 120-minute main examination has five tests. If you wait for the preliminary result before starting General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and your chosen language test, you compress three new subjects into the remaining window. If you ignore the preliminary’s two separate qualifying tests, you may never reach the mains. The right bridge keeps one eye on each preliminary clock and builds the new mains work in small, verifiable blocks.

SelectionShortlists candidates for mainsOnly mains marks count for Office Assistant final merit; no interview

This is the Office Assistant route, not Officer Scale I. The latter has a different post and an interview. The official notification calls the first stage “Preliminary Examination” and the second “Main Examination”. It says a candidate must qualify in both preliminary tests; an adequate number by category then proceeds to mains. For the Office Assistant mains, there is a minimum in each test and enough total score must be earned in relation to state vacancies. IBPS does not print the future numeric cutoffs in this notification. A mock score therefore cannot declare someone selected.

Treat the two preliminary clocks as separate constraints

Prelims testQuestionsMaximum marksLocked timeMains continuation
Reasoning404025 minutes40 questions, 50 maximum marks and 30 minutes at mains
Numerical Ability404020 minutes40 questions, 50 maximum marks and 30 minutes at mains

The Reasoning section has 25 minutes; Numerical Ability has 20. A spare minute in one section is not a transferable credit to the other. In each mock, keep four numbers for each test: attempted, correct, wrong and blank. A single “70 out of 80” headline hides whether one qualifying test is weak. Write the exact time and question where a reasoning set began to consume too much time. For Numerical, note if a wrong answer came from a wrong method, copied data, sign or unit, or hurried arithmetic.

Diagnose one 45-minute prelims mock

Use attempts and correct answers from the two separately timed tests. This calculates a raw mock corrected mark using +1 per correct answer and −0.25 per wrong answer; blank answers score zero. It is not an IBPS normalised score, cutoff or selection prediction. The repair order counts wrong plus blank questions; classify their causes before assigning study time.

Reasoning · 40 questions · 25 minutes
Numerical Ability · 40 questions · 20 minutes

The static prelims table above remains readable when scripts are unavailable. This tool runs in your browser; these input numbers are not sent to ProSyllabus.

Why the same raw mark can demand opposite repairs

CandidateAttemptedCorrectWrongBlankRaw corrected markLikely next test
A, 40-question section302551023.75Inspect the five wrong answers; retest the largest error cause
B, 40-question section252411523.75Inspect where the section clock went; test a better first pass

Both candidates have the same raw corrected mark because A has 25 correct minus five quarter-mark penalties and B has 24 correct minus one penalty. Copying the same “do more mocks” prescription for both would waste the information in the attempt pattern. A may need to understand why five attempted answers were wrong before accelerating; B may know the material but be entering expensive sets first. The table illustrates a diagnostic, not an IBPS cutoff. For each candidate, choose one fresh section test after the repair, then compare the specific error class as well as the total.

An error ledger that turns a mock into work

Error codeExampleOutput before next mock
K — knowledgeCould not set up a percentage-change problemOne explained method and two unseen variants
R — readingMissed “not” or inverted a condition in a puzzleUnderline the decisive phrase and reject each rival option
E — executionCorrect plan but a copied digit changes the resultWrite intermediate steps in five new timed items
T — time/selectionSpent too long on a set and left easier questions blankSet an abandon point; compare recovered marks per minute

Keep the ledger to one line per missed question: mock date, section, question family, error code, decisive evidence, one repair task and retest date. Do not paste a complete answer explanation into every row. The purpose is to see whether an error repeats. If three different DI questions fail because you read the wrong column, the shared defect is data extraction; another formula sheet is unlikely to fix it. If two reasoning sets fail because you begin drawing before checking whether all constraints are consistent, practise the setup decision rather than memorising the finished diagram.

When an unanswered question reflects time, first ask whether it was a deliberate skip. Skipping a long set to finish independent questions can be rational even if it leaves blanks. A blank at the end after a stalled set is a different signal. For each full mock, record which questions you intentionally skipped, which you never saw, and which you returned to. This makes the “blank” count actionable. A new mock is useful only if it tests a different behaviour: an earlier exit, a cleaner arithmetic line, a slower first read, or a better order of questions. Otherwise you are merely sampling your current weakness again.

The five mains sections and what actually changes

Mains testQuestionsMaximum marksTimeFirst bridge task
Reasoning405030 minutesCarry set selection forward; solve harder variants and track abandon decisions.
Computer Knowledge402015 minutesStart a concept-and-confusion ledger; this subject is absent from prelims.
General Awareness404015 minutesBuild dated source cards; retrieval speed matters in the short section.
English or Hindi Language404030 minutesChoose the notified language option and test reading plus grammar under its clock.
Numerical Ability405030 minutesCarry arithmetic accuracy forward and add longer data interpretation.
Official mains marks by test

Computer Knowledge20/200
General Awareness40/200
English or Hindi Language40/200
Numerical Ability50/200

Bars show maximum marks, not predicted topic weight or recommended hours. The five clocks total 120 minutes.

Reasoning and Numerical Ability continue, but their main-exam tables each show 40 questions for 50 maximum marks and a 30-minute clock. Do not turn 50 divided by 40 into an asserted value for every individual question: the notice states a test total, and the question-level marking can differ. In a mains mock, use the marks assigned to each question when calculating a corrected score. A quarter-mark penalty in a one-mark item is not necessarily the penalty for an item carrying another value. The 2026 information handout and on-screen instructions should settle the live paper.

Computer Knowledge: a 15-minute recall problem

Computer Knowledge appears only at mains, with 40 questions and 20 maximum marks in 15 minutes. The short clock rewards recognition of distinctions, not a late reading marathon. Build cards for concepts you can explain in one sentence: input versus output, memory versus storage, operating system versus application, network terms, security habits and common office-software actions. For every error, write the one feature that separates the correct term from its nearest distractor. Test with unseen wording, not only the same card. The kit can provide a compact fact layer, but the free ledger tells you which facts you personally keep confusing.

General Awareness: sources, dates and recall

General Awareness also has 40 questions, but its maximum is 40 marks and its clock is 15 minutes. Start a dated source ledger before the preliminary result. Separate static banking and rural-bank concepts from facts that can change. For each current fact, record the issuing body, source link, publication date, claim and last successful closed-book recall. If a value changes, keep the dated replacement, not two competing numbers. The notification does not declare a fixed “last six months” rule or a guaranteed current-affairs topic distribution. Use the latest official sources and the upcoming handout rather than a fabricated boundary.

Last closed-book recallCan I produce it under a clock? Was the answer recalled or merely recognised?
Confusable neighbourWhat wrong option might tempt me?Can I explain the difference in one line?

English or Hindi Language: make one deliberate choice

The Office Assistant mains table gives 40 questions, 40 maximum marks and 30 minutes for English Language or Hindi Language; candidates opt for one. Language was absent from the Office Assistant preliminary, so there is no preliminary language score to use as a proxy. Take one timed sample in your intended choice, then inspect comprehension, grammar and usage errors separately. Do not assume that choosing Hindi removes the local-language qualification for the RRB state you selected in the application. That is a separate rule explained in our local-language and state guide.

Numerical and Reasoning: keep the useful prelims habits

Carry forward calculation accuracy and the habit of rejecting bad reasoning sets early, but test them at the main examination’s 30-minute section time. A prelims puzzle you can solve after the clock is useful for learning, but it does not establish that you chose well under 25 minutes. For each reasoning set, record setup minutes, solve minutes, number of questions and corrected marks in the mock’s own scheme. For each numerical family, separate reading a data table, choosing the relationship, computing and checking the unit. Keep a tiny formula sheet only for formulas that appear in your ledger; an ever-growing general notebook hides the recurring misses.

A stage-aware week: ten blocks as an example, not an IBPS rule

SituationFirst two blocksNext emphasisMains bridge
Prelims Reasoning below your other testFresh 25-minute section and its error classificationSet selection plus two fresh variants of the repeat errorOne Computer and one Awareness retrieval block still happen
Numerical errors dominated by execution20-minute section and written calculation auditFive fresh arithmetic/DI items with checked intermediate stepsUse a 30-minute mains-level numerical set at week end
Prelims both steady; mains new subjects emptyMaintain one separate timed test for each prelims sectionSource-led Awareness and Computer cards across short sessionsBaseline in chosen language plus one five-test mock
After the preliminary sitting, result unknownDo a five-test baseline and review, without declaring qualificationRepair the weakest mains test and preserve two othersContinue until IBPS publishes the result; then adapt

Ten 45-minute blocks are an illustration for a reader who has that time, not a timetable everyone should copy. Reserve at least one timed retest and one review block for the cause that triggered the week. If your result depends on a weak preliminary section, protect its qualifying requirement even when a mains subject has more maximum marks. If prelims is already stable, shift more blocks to the three new mains subjects. Review one fresh item after the repair without your notes open; recognising a solution you have already seen is not evidence that the error is fixed.

The IBPS calendar currently lists Office Assistant prelims on 6, 12 and 13 December 2026 and the mains on 30 January 2027, both tentative. The detailed notification uses broader month windows and says IBPS may change the structure. Put dates in a calendar, but let the next official call letter and information handout replace them when issued. Registration for this cycle closed on 27 September 2026 after an extension; a reader who did not apply cannot join this sitting. The study method still works for a future cycle, but future pattern and dates must be rechecked.

What a mock and this page cannot establish

The diagnostic’s raw 80-mark number does not reproduce IBPS session normalisation. It cannot know the future preliminary cutoffs, the mains test minimums, your state’s allotment competition or the mark value of each mains question. It cannot infer that a blank was careless or that an error was caused by weak knowledge. Those are human review decisions. The official notification and current handout outrank any practice convention. Use this page as a process for creating better study evidence, not a selection forecast.

Is there an interview for RRB Office Assistant?

No. CRP RRBs-XV Office Assistant has a preliminary and a main online examination; only mains marks are considered for its final merit listing. The Officer posts have different selection routes.

Can a high overall prelims mock score compensate for one weak section?

No guarantee. The notification says Office Assistant candidates must qualify in both Reasoning and Numerical Ability prelims tests at IBPS-set minimum cutoffs. The future numeric cutoffs are not printed there.

Are Reasoning and Numerical prelims separately timed?

Yes. The XV notification lists 25 minutes for Reasoning and 20 for Numerical Ability, 45 minutes overall. The stage is not one transferable 45-minute pool.

What are the five Office Assistant mains tests?

Reasoning, Computer Knowledge, General Awareness, English or Hindi Language, and Numerical Ability. There are 40 questions in each, 200 questions and 200 maximum marks in 120 minutes overall.

Does a wrong answer always cost 0.25 marks?

No. IBPS deducts one quarter of the marks assigned to that question. A one-mark preliminary question loses 0.25; mains tests have different total marks, so use question-level marking where available.

When are the 2026 Office Assistant exams?

The IBPS 2026-27 tentative calendar lists preliminary exams on 6, 12 and 13 December 2026, and mains on 30 January 2027. Confirm the current call letter and information handout because dates can change.

Is the revision kit included with quiz or membership access?

The kit is a separate digital product. Its offer page shows a free first-page preview, current contents and price; do not assume it is bundled with quiz or membership access.
