Chapter 12: Understanding Markets

What is a market?

Summary

This chapter explains what markets are and how they function. A market is a place — physical or online — where people buy and sell goods and services, also known as a bazaar or haat. Every market has buyers and sellers who must agree on a price, often through negotiation and bargaining. Using the example of selling guavas, the chapter shows how prices settle at a level that is neither too high for the buyer nor too low for the seller, as the quantity offered by sellers and demanded by buyers interact over time. It surveys the kinds of markets around us: physical and online; domestic and international (involving imports and exports); and wholesale and retail, with a chain of participants — manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers and aggregators — illustrated by the Surat textile market. It explores the role of markets in people's lives, both economic and social, as places that connect people, traditions and ideas, like the Ima Keithal women's market of Imphal. The chapter then explains the government's role: controlling prices to protect buyers and sellers (maximum prices for essentials, minimum support prices and minimum wages), ensuring quality and safety standards, mitigating harmful external effects like pollution, and providing public goods. Finally it shows how consumers can assess quality using certification marks like FSSAI, ISI, AGMARK and BEE Star ratings, and online reviews.
