It begins with the Ghaznavid invasions: after the Hindu Shahis lost control of the Khyber Pass, Mahmud of Ghazni conducted seventeen campaigns into India, plundering and destroying temples at Mathura, Kannauj and Somnath and carrying away enormous booty.
