Summary

India's rich diversity — of landscapes, dresses, foods, languages, scripts and customs — is the first thing visitors notice. With over 1.4 billion people, the ‘People of India’ project counted 4,635 communities, 325 languages and 25 scripts. Yet beneath this diversity lies a deep unity, which the British historian Vincent Smith called ‘unity in diversity’. This shows in food: thousands of dishes are prepared from common staple grains (rice, wheat, millets, pulses) and shared spices like turmeric and cumin. It shows in clothing: the sari, a single unstitched length of cloth, comes in hundreds of regional varieties (Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Patola) and many ways of draping. It shows in festivals: Makara Sankrānti, the harvest festival, is celebrated across India around January 14 under different names — Pongal, Lohri, Magh Bihu, Uttarayan and more. It shows most strikingly in literature: the Pañchatantra and the two great epics, the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata, exist in countless regional, folk and tribal versions across India and Asia, creating a dense web of cultural connection. Indian culture celebrates diversity as an enrichment while never losing sight of the underlying unity — the ‘Many in the One’.
