When one whole is divided into equal parts, each part is a fractional unit, such as \(\tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac{1}{3}, \tfrac{1}{4}, \tfrac{1}{5}\); the more parts the whole is split into, the smaller each share, so \(\tfrac{1}{9} < \tfrac{1}{5}\). A fraction \(\tfrac{a}{b}\) has a numerator \(a\) and denominator \(b\), and fractions can be shown on the number line. The chapter explains equivalent fractions \u2014 different fractions that represent the same amount, such as \(\tfrac{1}{2} = \tfrac{2}{4} = \tfrac{3}{6}\) \u2014 obtained by multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same number, and shows how to reduce a fraction to its simplest form. Fractions are compared by making denominators equal. Mixed numbers like \(2\tfrac{1}{3}\) are converted to and from improper fractions. Finally, the chapter teaches adding and subtracting fractions: like fractions are added directly, while unlike fractions are first rewritten with a common denominator. Real-life sharing situations with rotis and lengths run throughout to keep the meaning of fractions concrete.
