UGC NET Cut-Off 2026 Subject-Wise, Category-Wise: All Cycles Since 2023

Checked 3 October 2026. Fixed for past cycles: NTA does not revise a cut-off PDF after the result. The December 2026 cut-offs will be added when NTA publishes them with that result; nothing on this page predicts them.

A UGC NET cut-off is a total out of 300, Paper 1 and Paper 2 together, set separately for every subject, every category and three levels: JRF, Assistant Professor and PhD only. In June 2026, for example, Political Science (code 02) closed at 222 for JRF, 196 for Assistant Professor and 170 for PhD only in the General (UR) category, and Geography at 250, 220 and 188. The search below holds every official cut-off of the five main categories for all subjects across seven cycles, June 2023 to June 2026, typed from NTA's own PDFs and checked against the totals NTA prints at the foot of each one.

Search your subject

UGC NET cut-off search: every cycle since June 2023

Pick your subject and category. You get the official cut-off for each level in each of the seven cycles, out of 300 (Paper 1 and Paper 2 together), with the number of candidates NTA lists as qualifying at that level. Add a total to see which level it would have reached in each past cycle.

Transcribed by ProSyllabus from the seven NTA cut-off PDFs listed under Sources; each cycle's counts match the Total row printed in its PDF. "—" means the PDF prints "----" for that cell. In June 2023 and June 2024 NTA gave the cut-off of five multi-shift subjects (Political Science, History, Commerce, Hindi, English) as a percentile, not marks, so no marks comparison is made for them. Persons-with-disability and third-gender cut-offs are in the official PDFs and are not in this tool. Comparing your total with a past cut-off is not a prediction.

How to use it: pick a subject and category, read across the cycles, and look at the spread rather than the last number alone. Across the larger subjects (at least 100 General candidates qualified for Assistant Professor), the General JRF cut-off moved by a median of 8 marks between neighbouring cycles from December 2024 to June 2026, by more than 10 marks in 4 of every 10 cases and by up to 40 (our arithmetic on the PDFs). A single cycle is a weak target. If you add your own total, the last column tells you which level that total would have cleared in each past cycle. It is a comparison with history, not a forecast of December 2026.

How a UGC NET cut-off is built

The method is printed in section 6.3 of the June 2026 information bulletin, and it explains why the same subject can need very different totals in different categories and cycles:

The five steps NTA follows (bulletin section 6.3)

  • Step I. The number of candidates qualified for Assistant Professor is 6% of the candidates who appeared in both papers on the basis of a master's degree.
  • Step II. Those slots are split across categories by the Government of India reservation policy.
  • Step III. To be considered at all you must appear in both papers and score at least 40% of the aggregate (General and EWS) or 35% (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD/PwBD, third gender). On 300 marks that is 120 and 105.
  • Step IV. Each category's slots are shared out among subjects in proportion to how many candidates of that category cleared the minimum in each subject. The total that fills a subject's share is that subject's cut-off.
  • Step V. JRF slots are allocated across categories by the same reservation policy.

The bulletin adds that "the qualifying criteria as decided by UGC is final and binding". The PhD-only cut-off is set by the results committee (bulletin section 1.3).

Where other pages get this wrong

There is no separate Paper 1 cut-off and no Paper 1 pass mark. NTA qualifies you on the total of both papers.

Commonly published instead: Many pages print a Paper 1 "qualifying mark" of 40% (35% for reserved categories), as if Paper 1 had to be cleared on its own.

The bulletin says the candidate must secure "at least 40% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together" (35% for reserved categories), and every cut-off PDF prints one total per subject. A strong Paper 2 can carry a weak Paper 1 and the reverse.

Marks or percentile? It depends on the cycle

Since December 2024 every cut-off PDF is in marks. For subjects held over more than one shift, the marks are normalised marks: the December 2024 bulletin introduced an equi-percentile method (Appendix IX) that converts each shift's raw marks to a common scale, and the result is "declared in percentile along with normalized marks". In June 2023 and June 2024 the method was the older percentile-score normalisation, and NTA printed the cut-offs of the five biggest multi-shift subjects (Political Science, History, Commerce, Hindi and English) as percentiles, marked with an asterisk. Those percentile figures cannot be compared with a marks cut-off from another cycle, so the search shows them but does not compare them with your total.

Third-gender candidates do not have a separate threshold of their own design: the bulletin says their subject-wise cut-off "would be the lowest among those for SC / ST / PwD/PwBD / OBC-NCL / General-EWS categories in the corresponding subject". The cut-off PDFs print a third-gender row where such a candidate qualified.

The counts are the column totals printed at the foot of each cut-off PDF, over every category including PwD and third gender. Whether the Assistant Professor column also counts the candidates who qualified for JRF is not stated in the PDFs, and the press releases do not settle it (see the conflict below), so read the counts as NTA's own column totals and nothing more. The December 2023 PDF headed its columns "Assistant Professor" and "JRF & Assistant Professor"; the June 2023 PDF "Jrf & Assistant Professor" and "Assistant Professor".

Out of 300. From the NTA cut-off PDFs. June 2024 is left out because three of these five subjects were in percentile that cycle.

What moved in June 2026

Against December 2025, the General (UR) JRF cut-off rose by 40 marks in English (186 to 226), 26 in Geography (224 to 250), 24 in Education (208 to 232) and 22 in Computer Science and Applications (192 to 214). It fell by 30 in Psychology (234 to 204), 26 in History (216 to 190) and 14 in Law (218 to 204). Political Science rose by 8 (214 to 222) and Commerce fell by 8 (218 to 210). These differences are our arithmetic on the two PDFs, for subjects where at least 100 General candidates qualified for Assistant Professor in June 2026. English, Commerce and Sociology were sat again on 9 and 10 September 2026 after NTA cancelled the June papers in those subjects, and their June 2026 cut-offs come from the re-examination PDF.

"not held" means the subject had no row in that cycle's cut-off PDF. Disaster Management (104) and Ayurveda Biology (105) first appear in December 2024; Forestry (106) and Statistics (107) in June 2026. June 2024 has no rows for Political Science, History, Commerce, Hindi or English in marks because NTA gave them in percentile.

Conflicts and limits we found

Printed side by side, not resolved

  • June 2026 qualified counts. The 28 August 2026 press release gives 4,241 qualified for JRF and Assistant Professor, 45,904 for Assistant Professor and PhD admission and 97,434 for PhD only. The column totals printed in the cut-off PDF for the same 84 subjects are 4,334, 50,154 and 97,449. NTA does not explain the difference.
  • December 2025 qualified counts. The press release of 4 February 2026 gives 5,108 qualified for JRF and Assistant Professor; the JRF column of the cut-off PDF totals 5,141. In June 2025 and December 2024 the press-release JRF figure (5,269 and 5,158) equals the PDF total exactly.
  • What the Assistant Professor column counts. The press releases from December 2024 give an "Assistant Professor and Ph.D." figure (48,161; 54,885 in June 2025; 54,713 in December 2025). The PDF's Assistant Professor total minus its JRF total comes close but not exactly (48,121; 54,847; 54,680, our arithmetic), which suggests, without proving, that the Assistant Professor column includes JRF qualifiers.
  • The re-examination. For English, Commerce and Sociology, the press release of 17 September 2026 (824 JRF, 11,610 Assistant Professor, 23,154 PhD only) matches the re-examination PDF exactly.
  • One June 2024 cell. In the June 2024 PDF, the Economics row for PwD-VI-SC prints only "110 1 ---- ----", four cells where six are expected. Placing 110 and 1 in the Assistant Professor column is the only placement that matches the PDF's printed totals (JRF 4,970, Assistant Professor 53,694). It is a PwD row, so it is not in the search.

Questions

Is the UGC NET cut-off out of 300 or a percentage?

The cut-off PDFs since December 2024 print totals out of 300, Paper 1 and Paper 2 combined. In June 2023 and June 2024 five multi-shift subjects (Political Science, History, Commerce, Hindi, English) were given in percentile instead.

Is there a separate cut-off for Paper 1?

No. NTA qualifies candidates on the aggregate of both papers, at least 40% for General and EWS and 35% for reserved categories, and then by the subject and category cut-off. No official document sets a Paper 1 pass mark.

What does "—" mean in the table?

The PDF prints "----" for that cell, which in practice means no candidate of that category qualified at that level in that subject.

Why is the JRF cut-off higher than the Assistant Professor cut-off?

JRF slots are a small share of the total, so the last candidate inside them scores more. The PhD-only cut-off is the lowest of the three because that list is the longest.

Can I use a past cut-off as my target for December 2026?

Use the range across cycles, not one number. In June 2026 the General JRF cut-off moved by as much as 40 marks from December 2025 in a large subject (English). NTA sets each cycle's cut-off from that cycle's results.

Where are the PwD and third-gender cut-offs?

In the same official PDFs, linked under Sources: each subject has 20 PwD rows (four disability types by five categories) and, where a candidate qualified, a third-gender row. This page and its search cover the five main categories.

When will the December 2026 cut-offs be out?

NTA publishes the cut-off PDF on the day of the result. The December 2026 result date has not been announced; see the dates guide in this series.

Practise it, don't just read it

Paper 1 is 100 of the 300 marks and the same paper for every subject. A few marks there move you across a cut-off line as surely as Paper 2 does.

Nine UGC NET quizzes are live on ProSyllabus today, all on Paper 1: teaching aptitude, research types and methods, research aptitude, reading comprehension, syllogisms and fallacies, logical reasoning, mathematical reasoning, ICT, and the higher education system. There is no Paper 2 subject quiz yet.
