UGC-NET 2026: The Master Strategy Guide
Navigating Paper 1 & Paper 2 in a Single 180-Minute Sprint
CRITICAL RULE: There is NO negative marking in UGC-NET. You must attempt all 150 questions. Never leave a question blank, even if you are purely guessing at the last second!
Understanding the Single-Session Layout
The NTA conducts UGC-NET as a continuous 3-hour session. You have the flexibility to switch between Paper 1 (General) and Paper 2 (Subject-specific) at any time. This flexibility is a double-edged sword; without a plan, you might over-spend time on one paper at the cost of the other.
The "Golden 60-120" Time Allocation
Paper 1 (General)
Goal: 60 Minutes
- Quick Wins: ICT, Communication, and Higher Education. Solve these first as they are fact-based.
- Heavy Hitters: Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning. Give these 20-25 minutes total.
- The Buffer: If DI is too complex, mark it for review and move to Paper 2.
Paper 2 (Subject)
Goal: 120 Minutes
- Speed Run: Attempt the first 100 questions in 100 minutes.
- Conceptual Depth: Focus on Assertion-Reasoning types. Read the 'Because' relationship carefully.
- The Finish: Spend the last 20 minutes revisiting marked questions and ensuring 100% completion.
Mastering the CBT Interface
- Save & Next: Your absolute best friend. Every answer must be saved.
- Mark for Review: Use this for questions where you've narrowed it down to two options. Since there's no penalty, select your best guess before marking for review.
- Question Palette: Keep an eye on the "White" icons—these are unvisited. Ensure every icon is either "Green" (Answered) or "Purple with a tick" (Answered & Marked for Review) by the end.
Dress Code & Entry Protocols
UGC-NET security is strict. Follow these NTA-specific guidelines:
- Apparel: Wear half-sleeved clothing without large buttons. Avoid pockets where possible.
- Footwear: Slippers or sandals with thin soles. Avoid shoes/boots as you may be asked to remove them.
- Jewelry: No metallic items, including rings, nose-pins, or bangles.
- Biometrics: Arrive 90 minutes early. Biometric registration (iris/fingerprint) is mandatory and can have long queues.
Mandatory Carry-Items
- Admit Card: Hard copy with the self-declaration (Undertaking) filled.
- Original ID: Aadhaar Card, PAN, or Voter ID (Photocopies are NOT allowed).
- Photograph: One passport-size photo to be pasted on the attendance sheet.
- Pen: Transparent blue or black ballpoint pen.
