Checked 30 September 2026. Qualifying marks are from the Board letter of 28.06.2022 and East Coast Railway's 2025-26 notification; the SC/ST standards from RBE 69/2026 (31.08.2026). The score analysis is our reading of one zone's 2026 marks table. A later Board letter could change any of it.
To reach the AFA/ADFM panel through the 30% LDCE you clear four bars in order: 90 of 150 in the CBT (three fifths of that for SC/ST, 54 by our arithmetic); a medical fitness test; 30 of 50 in viva and record of service together (18 for SC/ST); and, inside that, at least 15 of 25 from record of service. Then merit decides who takes the seats. East Coast Railway published its full 2026 AFA marks table, so this guide also shows what those bars looked like in a real cohort — as counts only, with no names or roll numbers.

Where other pages get this wrong
There is no "Best Amongst the Failed" in the AFA LDCE. If no SC or ST candidate reaches the relaxed standard, the reserved seat stays unfilled.
Commonly published instead: Pages that mix up the 70% selection and the LDCE say reserved seats are filled from the best of those who failed.
The Board withdrew Best Amongst the Failed from LDCEs by its letter of 24.08.2020, because an LDCE is "purely on the basis of merit", and RBE 69/2026 of 31.08.2026 repeats it. It still applies to 70% selections. In East Coast Railway's 2025-26 AFA panel the ST seat was not filled.
Every bar, in order
| Stage | General | SC/ST | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. CBT | 90 of 150 | three fifths of 90 (54, our arithmetic) | ECoR para 6; RBE 69/2026 |
| 2. Call for medical and viva | up to 5 × vacancies, category-wise, in merit order | same rule | ECoR para 7 |
| 3. Medical fitness | must be fit in the prescribed standard before viva | same | E(GP)80/2/8 of 31.10.1991, cited in ECoR para 9 |
| 4. Viva + record of service | 30 of 50 | 18 of 50 | ECoR para 6; RBE 69/2026 |
| 5. Record of service within that | at least 15 of 25 | at least 15 of 25 | same |
| 6. Panel | merit order against the seats | merit; a candidate who qualifies on general standards without relaxation takes an unreserved seat | ECoR para 5; RBE 69/2026 para 3 |
The record-of-service floor is the rule people forget. The viva and record carry 25 marks each and the pass is on the total, but 15 of the 30 must come from record of service. A perfect viva cannot carry a weak record. Record of service is assessed from your APARs — ECoR asked controlling officers to keep the last five (2018-19 to 2022-23) ready — and your service record. IREM grades record-of-service scores of 80% and above as "Outstanding" and 60% to 79% as "Good", and says there is no moderation.
Viva and record of service: do the marks clear the bar?
Enter marks out of 25 for each. General candidates need 30 of 50 together; SC/ST candidates need 18. Everyone needs at least 15 of the 25 in record of service.
Rules: ECoR notification of 23.12.2025 para 6 (25 + 25; 30 including at least 15 in record of service) and RBE 69/2026 (18 for SC/ST, still at least 15 in record of service). The CBT must be cleared first, and only medically fit candidates are called for viva.
| Viva | Record of service | Category | Result (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 14 | General | Fails: total 34 but record below 15 |
| 15 | 15 | General | Passes: exactly 30, record exactly 15 |
| 12 | 17 | General | Fails: total 29 |
| 3 | 15 | SC/ST | Passes: exactly 18, record 15 |
| 10 | 14 | SC/ST | Fails: record below 15 |

What ECoR's 2026 AFA marks table shows
East Coast Railway published RRB/Ajmer's "Declaration of Results" for the AFA post: each candidate's final mark and normalised score out of 150. We counted it. 69 candidates are listed (60 UR, 9 SC, no PwBD); 50 were present and 19 absent. 7 reached a normalised 90 (5 UR, 2 SC). All seven were empanelled on 21.08.2026 against 8 seats; the ST seat was not filled.
Our count over the official ECoR table, 50 candidates present. Green bands are at or above the general qualifying 90.
| Measure (ECoR AFA, 50 present) | Value (our count) |
|---|---|
| Normalised 90 or more | 7 — 14% of those present (5 UR, 2 SC) |
| Final mark 90 or more before normalisation | 8 |
| Candidates above 90 before normalisation and below after | 1 (final 91.33, normalised 89.94; not empanelled) |
| Top normalised score | 124.15 |
| Mean and median normalised score | 66.27 and 66.37 |
| Lowest normalised score | 23.47 |
| SC candidates present / at 54 or more / at 90 or more | 7 / 6 / 2 |
| Called for viva (letter of 06.08.2026) | 11 (5 UR, 6 SC) |
| Empanelled (Office Order 1/38/2026) | 7: 6 against UR seats (one of them an SC candidate), 1 against the SC seat |
Two readings of this table, both ours. First, the viva list matches the SC/ST rule exactly: the five UR candidates called are the five UR candidates at 90 or more, and the six SC candidates called are every SC candidate at 54 or more. The letter itself does not state the basis, and six SC calls is more than five times the one SC vacancy. Second, the panel order is not the CBT order: an SC candidate with a higher CBT score than some UR empanelees sits on the SC seat, and panel positions 4 to 6 do not follow the normalised scores — the viva and record of service marks, which ECoR did not publish for AFA, account for the difference.
Normalisation: why 91.33 was not enough
The 2025-26 CBT ran on two dates, 24.05.2026 and 31.05.2026, and the Board's letter of 02.04.2026 adopted normalisation "to ensure parity". The AFA table carries two roll series, "A" (22 present) and "C" (28 present); it does not say which sat on which date. In series C the normalised score is the final mark scaled up by a factor between 150/149 and 150/147 — consistent with deleted questions being removed and the mark rescaled to 150, as the AEN table shows in detail. In series A the published score moved from the final mark by between −1.39 and +3.62 marks. The one candidate whose final mark of 91.33 became 89.94 was in series A. All figures are our arithmetic over the official table.
| Roll series (as printed) | Present | Absent | Normalised minus final mark (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 22 | 13 | −1.39 to +3.62 |
| C | 28 | 6 | a pure rescale: × 150/149 to × 150/147 |
No normalisation method was published. A widely read exam-analysis site analysed normalisation across 35,188 candidates for AOM, ACM, AME, AEE, APO, AMM, AEN and ASTE — AFA was not in its analysis (reported). The detailed mechanics, from a zone that published every column, are in our AEN guide on deletions, rescaling and normalisation. The lesson for AFA is the same: within about four marks of 90, do not count on either side of the line until your zone publishes the normalised score.
SC/ST: the rule and our reading of it
RBE 69/2026 (Board letter No. 2022-E(SCT)I/25/14 of 31.08.2026) says that in the 30% LDCE SC/ST candidates' written qualifying marks "will continue to be" three fifths of the general standard, and that in viva and record of service they need 18 in place of 30, still with 15 in record of service. The phrase "will continue" means the rule was not new in 2026, which fits the ECoR viva call of 06.08.2026 made before the letter (our reading). The letter concerns non-safety categories and does not list posts; treating AFA, a finance post, as non-safety is our reading. A candidate who qualifies on general standards without any relaxation is placed against an unreserved seat, exactly as happened to one SC candidate on the ECoR panel.
What is the pass mark in the railway AFA LDCE?
90 of 150 in the CBT for general candidates, then 30 of 50 in viva and record of service together, with at least 15 of the 25 from record of service. A medical fitness test comes before the viva.
What is the pass mark for SC and ST candidates?
Three fifths of the general written mark, which is 54 of 150 by our arithmetic, and 18 of 50 in viva and record of service, still with at least 15 from record of service (RBE 69/2026).
Is Best Amongst the Failed used in the AFA LDCE?
No. It does not apply to LDCEs; a reserved seat with no qualified candidate stays unfilled.
Can a good viva make up for a weak record of service?
No. At least 15 of the 25 record-of-service marks are required whatever the viva score.
How many passed the 2026 AFA CBT at East Coast Railway?
By our count of ECoR's table, 7 of the 50 candidates present reached a normalised 90, and all seven were empanelled for 8 seats.
Can normalisation push a score below 90?
It did for one ECoR AFA candidate: final mark 91.33, normalised 89.94, not empanelled.
Are the viva and record-of-service marks published?
Not for AFA at ECoR. The marks table carries only the CBT final mark and normalised score.
