Checked 30 September 2026. Circle figures are from each circle’s notification or memo (official) and are often provisional; circles revise them after the exam. The carry-forward rules are Directorate letters issued year by year.
There is no all-India vacancy figure for Postman and Mail Guard. Each Postal Circle counts its own posts, splits them between the MTS LDCE and the GDS exam, and publishes the table with its notification or, sometimes, only after the exam. This guide gathers the four 2026 tables we could read in full — West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh — and explains the carry-forward rules that decide how many posts a circle has to offer in the first place.
The split rule is in our recruitment rules and eligibility guide: half the posts by LDCE from MTS of the circle, half by the competitive exam limited to GDS of the circle, with unfilled LDCE posts moving to GDS. What follows is how that rule looks in real tables.
Official circle tables; the four-circle total is our arithmetic and is not an all-India figure.
Four circles, side by side
| Circle | Date and status | LDCE (MTS) | Exam (GDS) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| West Bengal | 01.06.2026, provisional | 82 | 71 (65 after compassionate and sports) | 153 |
| Tamil Nadu | 15.09.2026, provisional | 194 (Postman 189, Mail Guard 5) | 182 (Postman 177, Mail Guard 5) | 376 |
| Uttarakhand | 03.09.2026, final | 42 | 34 | 76 |
| Himachal Pradesh | 13.08.2026 | 18 (Postman 17, Mail Guard 1) | 13 (Postman 12, Mail Guard 1) | 31 |
Official circle tables. Totals for Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh, and the LDCE and exam sums for those two, are our arithmetic from the category rows.
Official circle figures; West Bengal’s GDS figure is before its 3 compassionate and 3 sports deductions.
In all four circles the LDCE side is a little larger than the GDS side, not an exact half (our reading). Two things push it that way. Circles split vacancies division by division, and an odd number in a division cannot be halved. And compassionate-appointment and sports-quota posts, where a circle shows them, come off the GDS side: in West Bengal the 67 GDS Postman posts became 61 after 3 compassionate and 3 sports posts, while the 77 LDCE Postman posts were untouched.
West Bengal: the full table
| Post | Total | LDCE (MTS) | GDS exam | Compassionate | Sports | GDS net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Postman | 144 | 77 (UR 55, SC 18, ST 4) | 67 | 3 | 3 | 61 (UR 29, SC 10, ST 4, OBC 11, EWS 7) |
| Mail Guard | 9 | 5 (UR 4, ST 1) | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 (UR 3, OBC 1) |
| Total | 153 | 82 (UR 59, SC 18, ST 5) | 71 | 3 | 3 | 65 (UR 32, SC 10, ST 4, OBC 12, EWS 7) |
Official: West Bengal notification of 01.06.2026, Annexure II-A, marked provisional and subject to change. Horizontal PwBD vacancies: 0 in every column. Mail Guard units: RMS SG 2, Kolkata RMS 4, Kolkata AP Sorting 1, RMS H 2.
Two details in this table are worth noticing. The LDCE side, a promotion, has no OBC or EWS column; the GDS side, which the rules treat as direct recruitment, carries OBC and EWS as well. Odisha’s 2026 LDCE result, in the same way, applies the UR qualifying mark to OBC and EWS candidates. And the Mail Guard count is 9, not 5: 5 is only the Mail Guard LDCE column.
Where other pages get this wrong
West Bengal’s 2026 table shows 153 Postman and Mail Guard posts: Postman 144 and Mail Guard 9.
Commonly published instead: “Postman 144, Mail Guard 5, 149 in total” — including on an older page of this site.
Annexure II-A gives Mail Guard 5 posts by LDCE and 4 by the GDS exam, 9 in all. Reading only the LDCE column gives 5.
Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
| Circle | What the memo shows |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Postman: LDCE 189, GDS 177, total 366. Mail Guard: LDCE 5 (UR 3, SC 1, ST 1), GDS 5 (UR 3, OBC 2), total 10. Mail Guard units: CH Sorting 1, RMS M 2, RMS T 2, RMS MA 2, RMS CB 3. |
| Uttarakhand | LDCE 42 (UR 30, SC 7, ST 5; horizontal 6). GDS 34 (UR 16, SC 5, ST 1, OBC 8, EWS 4; horizontal 5). Compassionate 2, sports 1. Dehradun has the most: LDCE 26, GDS 23. Final vacancies issued after the exam. |
| Himachal Pradesh | Postman LDCE 17 (UR 11, SC 2, ST 4), Postman GDS 12 (UR 9, SC 2, OBC 1), Mail Guard (RMS Mandi) LDCE 1 and GDS 1. Also 1 compassionate post (Shimla) and 1 PwBD backlog of 2025 to be filled by LDCE. |
Official: Tamil Nadu REP/5-2/2026 dated 15.09.2026; Uttarakhand Rectt./2-5/2026 dated 03.09.2026; Himachal Pradesh R&E/77-7/2026 dated 13.08.2026. From the Uttarakhand and Himachal memos we could not tell whether the compassionate, sports and backlog posts sit inside the category totals, so we print them separately.
The Tamil Nadu memo is often quoted as 366 Postman and Mail Guard posts. 366 is Postman alone; the Mail Guard table on its third page adds 10, for 376 (our sum). Uttarakhand’s final figures are dated 03.09.2026, almost two months after the written exam of 12.07.2026 (our arithmetic).
Official circle tables. Uttarakhand’s memo does not show Mail Guard separately.
Why the numbers move: carry-forward
| Letter | What it did |
|---|---|
| 17.05.2022 | 1,149 MTS and 2,121 Postman / Mail Guard vacancies of 2018 to 2021, still unfilled across circles, added to 2022 (sub judice posts excluded) |
| 20.07.2023 | Unfilled vacancies of 2022 added to 2023 (as recited in the 12.06.2024 letter) |
| 12.06.2024 | Unfilled vacancies of 2021 added to 2024; anything still unfilled after the 2024 process to be reported to the Staff Selection Commission for open recruitment |
| 11.06.2026 | Unfilled vacancies of 2025 added to 2026 (sub judice posts excluded) |
Official: DoP letters 03-03/2019-SPN-I (Pt I) of 17.05.2022, 12.06.2024 and 11.06.2026. We have not read the 20.07.2023 letter itself.
The pattern is the same each time: posts the departmental exams could not fill in one year are rolled into a later year, rather than lost. For a candidate this has two consequences. A circle’s 2026 figure is not a measure of how many Postmen retired in 2026; it includes posts left over from 2025. And the 2024 letter shows the Directorate is prepared to hand unfilled posts to the SSC, which is the open market, if the departmental routes keep failing to fill them.
Circle tables also move within a year. Karnataka issued an addendum on 10.09.2026 and a corrigendum on 17.09.2026 to its provisional 2026 Postman vacancies, after the DEST of 30.08.2026: one hearing-impaired backlog vacancy of 2024 at Bengaluru GPO had been shown under the GDS exam instead of the LDCE, and PwBD candidates were allowed to revise their options by 21.09.2026. Assam’s result of 28.09.2026 left 2 SC Postman posts unfilled for want of eligible candidates and kept 1 UR post at Guwahati unfilled after a horizontal vacancy found no candidate. Posts like these are what the next year’s carry-forward letter collects.
Reading your own circle’s table
Five things to check in the annexure
- Is it marked provisional? West Bengal’s and Tamil Nadu’s were; Uttarakhand’s came only after the exam.
- Which columns belong to you: LDCE for MTS, the GDS exam for GDS. OBC and EWS appear only on the GDS side.
- Are compassionate and sports posts deducted, and from which side?
- Is Mail Guard shown separately, and in which units? You are considered for Mail Guard only if you opt for it.
- Is there a later addendum or corrigendum? Karnataka issued two in September 2026.
Our checklist, drawn from the West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Assam documents.
The division-by-division rows matter more than the circle total. You are placed by rank against the divisions you listed, so a division with no vacancy in your category is a preference that cannot be met. Our allotment guide shows how that plays out, including candidates who ranked high enough but had listed only divisions that were already full.
How many Postman vacancies are there in 2026 across India?
No all-India figure is published. Each circle publishes its own table. The four we read in full add up to 636 Postman and Mail Guard posts (our sum): West Bengal 153, Tamil Nadu 376, Uttarakhand 76 and Himachal Pradesh 31.
How many Mail Guard posts did West Bengal show for 2026?
9: 5 by LDCE from MTS and 4 by the GDS exam.
Why is there no OBC column for the LDCE?
The LDCE is a promotion, and the circle tables we read show only UR, SC and ST on that side. OBC and EWS appear on the GDS side, which the rules treat as direct recruitment.
Are the vacancies final when the exam is notified?
Often not. West Bengal and Tamil Nadu marked theirs provisional, Uttarakhand issued final figures on 03.09.2026 after the exam, and Karnataka corrected its table in September 2026.
What happens to posts that are not filled?
Directorate letters add them to a later vacancy year; the 2026 letter added 2025’s unfilled posts. The 2024 letter said posts still unfilled after 2024 would be reported to the Staff Selection Commission.
Do unfilled MTS posts go to GDS?
Unfilled LDCE posts for Postman and Mail Guard are added to the GDS share under the 2023 rules.
Where do I find my circle’s table?
In the annexure to your circle’s notification, on the circle website and the India Post website, and in any later addendum or corrigendum.
Is Tamil Nadu’s figure 366 or 376?
366 is Postman only. With 10 Mail Guard posts the total is 376 (our sum).
