Checked 30 September 2026. The DEST rules are in DoP letter 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 19.12.2022, for exams notified from 01.01.2023 (official). Each circle fixes its own DEST date after the Paper I to III result; watch your circle’s notices on the India Post website.
After the written papers, Postman and Mail Guard candidates face one more step: the Data Entry Skill Test, Paper-IV. It is short — 15 minutes on a computer — and it is only qualifying, but it is the step where a good written rank can still be lost. It is also the number most often printed wrong. The Postman DEST is 600 key depressions, not 1,000; that figure belongs to the Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant exam.
This guide traces the DEST from the 2022 pattern to the letter of 19.12.2022 that governs it now, sets out who is called and what they must score, lists the 2026 DEST dates we found by circle, and gives you a speed check for practice. The rest of the pattern is in our common exam pattern guide.
Official: DoP letter 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 19.12.2022. The 18.75 is our arithmetic from 75% of 25.

Official: DoP letter 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 19.12.2022 (issued 20.12.2022), as reproduced in the West Bengal notification of 01.06.2026. The letter’s own table labels the DEST as Paper-III in its qualifying row; every circle notice we read calls it Paper-IV.
The medium is English only, and the test is evaluated by the software, not by an examiner. Telangana’s DEST notice of 03.09.2026 states all of it in one paragraph: the medium of DEST will be English only, it will be held on computer for 15 minutes, data entry of 600 key impressions plus or minus 5%, and evaluation by the system.

Official: DoP letters of 05.04.2022 and 19.12.2022. The 19.12.2022 letter cites the letters of 09.09.2021 and 22.07.2022; we have not read those two letters themselves, so we do not print their figures.
Where other pages get this wrong
The Postman and Mail Guard DEST is 600 key depressions in 15 minutes, 75% to qualify for Gen/OBC/EWS and 60% for SC/ST/PwBD, with 3 times the vacancies called.
Commonly published instead: 1,000 key depressions, a 60%/50% qualifying line, and a 5 times shortlist — including on older pages of this site.
1,000 key depressions is the PA/SA figure in the same letter. The 60%/50% line and the 5x shortlist are from the 05.04.2022 pattern, replaced by the letter of 19.12.2022 for every exam notified from 01.01.2023.
The shortlist: who is called
Not everyone who clears the written papers sits the DEST. Candidates who have cleared Paper-I plus Paper-II combined and Paper-III separately are ranked, and three times the number of vacancies are called. The letter adds two refinements. If the vacancies are revised before the Paper-I and II results, the shortlist is three times the revised figure. A revision after the results is allowed only in exceptional circumstances, with the approval of the Director General of Postal Services. West Bengal’s 2026 notification applies the multiple to the total of Postman and Mail Guard vacancies together.
Shortlists can also change. North East Circle withdrew its first DEST shortlist of 22.08.2026 and replaced it on 17.09.2026 with a revised list — 22 MTS candidates for the LDCE and 147 GDS candidates — for a DEST held in seven batches on 24.09.2026. Uttar Pradesh published its DEST shortlist together with lists of candidates whose OMR sheets were rejected by the software for wrongly filled roll numbers, with the venue and schedule to follow.

Official circle memos on the India Post website, checked 30.09.2026. The written papers were held on 12.07.2026 in every circle. Andhra Pradesh: the website’s listing title says the DEST was conducted on 22.09.2026; the memo itself, dated 22.09.2026, says 13.09.2026, and we print the memo.
Our arithmetic from the official dates in the table above.
The spread is the point. Across the circles we found, the DEST fell between seven and eleven weeks after the written exam (our arithmetic). A candidate who stops practising after 12 July has lost two months. Start typing practice before the written exam, not after the shortlist.
What 600 key depressions means in practice
| Measure | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Band allowed | 570 to 630 key depressions | Our arithmetic: 600 plus or minus 5% |
| Average pace needed | 40 key depressions a minute (38 to 42 across the band) | Our arithmetic over 15 minutes |
| Qualifying marks, Gen / OBC / EWS | 18.75 of 25 | Our arithmetic: 75% of 25 |
| Qualifying marks, SC / ST / PwBD | 15 of 25 | Our arithmetic: 60% of 25 |
| How keystrokes become marks | Not published | Evaluated by the software |
Odisha’s 2026 result prints the same 18.75 and 15 as its DEST qualifying marks. Circle results show DEST marks with decimals, which tells you the software awards part marks; the formula itself is not published.
A key depression is one press of a key, and the space bar counts. Forty a minute is a gentle pace for anyone who types every day, and a hard one for someone who has only ever used a phone. The risk is not speed alone but corrections: every key you go back to fix costs time. Practise on English prose, on a real keyboard, with a 15-minute timer, and check both your speed and how often you correct.
DEST practice check: is your speed inside the 15 minutes?
Time yourself on any English passage and count key depressions (every key you press, including the space bar). Enter what you typed and how long it took.
Official: 600 key depressions, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes, on a computer, in English, evaluated by software (DoP letter 19.12.2022; Telangana DEST notice 03.09.2026). Our arithmetic: that is 570 to 630 key depressions, or 38 to 42 a minute, 40 a minute at the middle. The Department does not publish how the software turns keystrokes and errors into marks out of 25, so this screen does not predict a mark; it only tells you whether you finish the passage in time and how clean your typing was.
Practice checklist
- Use a full-size keyboard; the DEST is on a desktop computer, not a phone or laptop you are used to.
- Type English passages of about 600 key depressions, timed at 15 minutes.
- Learn the positions of all keys, including punctuation.
- Aim for 40 a minute with few corrections before you aim for more speed.
- Check your batch and venue on the circle’s DEST notice; North East ran its 2026 DEST in seven batches.
Our checklist, built from the DEST letter and the Telangana, UP and North East notices.
How many key depressions are in the Postman DEST?
600, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes. 1,000 is the PA/SA figure.
What are the DEST qualifying marks?
75% for Gen, OBC and EWS and 60% for SC, ST and PwBD (if not exempted), out of 25. That is 18.75 and 15 marks.
Does the DEST count for merit?
No. It is qualifying only. The merit list is on Paper-I plus Paper-II combined.
How many candidates are called to the DEST?
Three times the vacancies declared at notification, or three times the revised figure if vacancies are revised before the Paper-I and II result.
Is the DEST in Hindi or the local language?
No. The DEST is held in English only.
Who marks the DEST?
The software. The Department does not publish the formula that turns keystrokes into marks.
When is the DEST held?
Each circle fixes its own date after the Paper I to III result. In 2026 the dates we found ran from 30.08.2026 to 24.09.2026.
Is Mail Guard also subject to the DEST?
Yes. The DEST letter covers Postman and Mail Guard together.
