GDS to MTS Vacancies and Results by Circle: What Has Been Published

Checked 30 September 2026. Every figure here is from a circle document with its date (official). Vacancy tables are provisional until a circle issues final figures, results arrive circle by circle over months, and supplementary lists follow. Re-check your circle’s recruitment page.

There is no all-India number for GDS to MTS vacancies. Each Postal Circle notifies its own exam, prints its own vacancy table, declares its own result and then issues supplementary lists as selected candidates join or fall away. That makes the national picture patchy, and it is why figures quoted without a circle and a date are close to useless. This page collects what circles have actually published, with the date on each, and counts only — no candidate names or roll numbers.

Official. Rajasthan’s category figures add to 62 and Uttarakhand’s to 20 (our arithmetic). Telangana’s supplementary result does not give the number of next-in-merit candidates in a form we can count reliably, so we do not print one.

Exam-quota posts only. West Bengal’s figure is its provisional exam column; Rajasthan’s is the division-wise total in its exam result; Uttarakhand’s is its final exam table. Not comparable to each circle’s total MTS vacancies.

West Bengal 2026 in detail

West Bengal’s Annexure II-B lists 44 divisions and units. Seven show no MTS vacancy at all for 2026 (Birbhum, Purulia, Malda, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the three Regional Offices). The four largest rows are all in or around Kolkata’s mail and sorting network:

UnitTotalNet for GDSSeniorityExam
RMS WB Division32281414
Kolkata RMS161477
East Kolkata151376
Kolkata AP Sorting121055
All 44 rows22420292110

Official: West Bengal notification 01.06.2026, Annexure II-B. Vacancies were marked “subject to change”.

Two things stand out. The Railway Mail Service and sorting units carry a large share of MTS work, so a GDS willing to give them a high preference may find more room than in a rural division. And a sizeable block of exam posts sits in offices with no seniority share at all — Kolkata GPO, Central Kolkata, the Circle Office and others — which is why West Bengal’s exam column is larger than its seniority column. Our quota guide works through that arithmetic.

West Bengal 2026: look up one division or unit

All 44 rows of Annexure II-B of the West Bengal notification dated 01.06.2026. The figures were provisional and “subject to change”.

Official counts from Annexure II-B; the share of the circle’s exam posts is our arithmetic (out of 110). Category-wise splits for each row are in the notification itself.

Rajasthan 2026: the first 2026 MTS result we found

Rajasthan Circle declared the result of the GDS to MTS exam of 12.07.2026 on 21.09.2026, the earliest 2026 MTS result we found in the Department’s document store. It filled 62 vacancies: UR 30, EWS 6, SC 7, ST 6 and OBC 13, with 4 earmarked for PwBD and 2 shown as carried-forward PwBD vacancies. The largest single unit was the RMS ‘J’ Division, Ajmer, with 16. Final answer keys had been posted on 17.09.2026, four days before the result.

The memo then set a tight schedule, which is typical: appointment orders by 23.09.2026, any unconditional refusal to reach the Circle Office by 24.09.2026, and joining by the forenoon of 26.09.2026, with training starting from the date of joining. It adds that requests for re-allotment “will not be entertained in any circumstances”. Allotment followed the Directorate’s letters of 18.10.2023 and 31.10.2023 — the same procedure every circle uses, explained in our merit list guide.

Uttarakhand: final vacancies after the exam

Uttarakhand’s notification of 01.06.2026 said vacancies “will be intimated in due course”. The final figures came on 03.09.2026, almost two months after the paper. For MTS it printed one table, headed as the 50% of vacancies from GDS to MTS through the competitive exam: 20 posts (UR 11, SC 2, ST 0, OBC 2, EWS 5), with horizontal reservation of 8 (VH 3, HH 4, OH 0, Others 1). Dehradun had 6, the RMS ‘DN’ Division 4 and Almora 3. This is worth knowing if your own circle’s notification is silent on numbers: you may sit the exam before you know how many posts it is for.

Carried-forward vacancies: why this year’s number includes earlier years

LetterWhat it did
17.05.20221,149 MTS and 2,121 Postman / Mail Guard vacancies of 2018 to 2021, still unfilled, added to 2022 (excluding sub judice)
20.07.2023Unfilled vacancies of the 2022 vacancy year added to 2023
12.06.2024Unfilled Postman, Mail Guard and MTS vacancies of 2021 added to 2024; anything still unfilled after 2024 to be reported to the Staff Selection Commission
11.06.2026Unfilled Postman, Mail Guard and MTS vacancies of 2025 added to 2026 (excluding sub judice)

Official: DoP letters 03-03/2019-SPN-I (Pt I) of 17.05.2022, 12.06.2024 and 11.06.2026; the letter of 20.07.2023 is as cited in the letter of 12.06.2024.

The pattern is that the Department keeps rolling unfilled posts forward rather than letting them lapse, so a circle’s vacancy figure for any year can include posts from earlier years that went unfilled. The 2024 letter added one warning: posts still unfilled after the 2024 process would be reported to the Staff Selection Commission for open recruitment. We did not find a later letter reporting what happened to them.

Official. The exam is common to all circles on the same day, alongside the Postman and Mail Guard exam. We have not verified the 2022 and 2023 dates from a primary document, so they are left out.

Where things stood on 30 September 2026

We checked the Department’s document store and the West Bengal Circle’s recruitment page on 30.09.2026. Rajasthan’s result of 21.09.2026 was still the only 2026 GDS to MTS result we found. Circles were still in the Postman and Mail Guard stage: West Bengal scheduled its DEST on 23.09.2026 and 24-26.09.2026 (notices dated 21.09.2026 and 22.09.2026), and Uttar Pradesh published its DEST shortlist for Postman and Mail Guard in September, together with a list of candidates whose OMR sheets were rejected by the evaluating software for wrongly filled roll numbers. Because the Postman appointments are completed before any MTS appointment (see our merit list guide), MTS results in those circles are likely to follow the Postman lists — that is our inference from the procedure, not a date anyone has announced.

How to read your circle’s MTS vacancy table

  • Find the MTS annexure (West Bengal calls it II-B). Postman and Mail Guard are in a separate annexure.
  • Look at the exam column, not the total. Compassionate, sports and seniority posts are not open to the exam.
  • Read your category in the vertical columns (UR, SC, ST, OBC, EWS) and check the horizontal PwBD columns separately.
  • Note “provisional” or “subject to change”: final figures can arrive after the exam, as in Uttarakhand.
  • Check the preference list: offices with no seniority share may put all their posts in the exam column.

Our checklist, drawn from the West Bengal, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand documents.

How many GDS to MTS vacancies are there in 2026?

There is no all-India figure. Circles publish their own: West Bengal 224 (110 through the exam), Rajasthan 62 in its result, Uttarakhand 20 exam posts.

Has the GDS to MTS 2026 result been declared?

Rajasthan declared on 21.09.2026. As of 30.09.2026 we found no other 2026 MTS result; each circle declares its own.

When was the GDS to MTS 2026 exam?

On 12.07.2026, common to all circles, alongside the Postman and Mail Guard exam.

Why do MTS vacancies change after the notification?

Circles publish provisional figures and may issue final ones later. Uttarakhand issued its final vacancies on 03.09.2026, after the exam.

Are unfilled MTS vacancies carried forward?

Yes. The Directorate added unfilled 2025 Postman, Mail Guard and MTS vacancies to 2026 by its letter of 11.06.2026, and did the same in earlier years.

How many vacancies did Rajasthan fill in 2026?

62: UR 30, EWS 6, SC 7, ST 6 and OBC 13.

What happens if a selected GDS does not join?

The post goes to the next candidate in the merit list of the same category. Telangana’s 2025 supplementary result shows 3 of 57 selected GDS not joining and being replaced this way.
