Checked 29 September 2026. Pattern from DoP letter 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 05.04.2022 as modified on 10.07.2024 (no Paper-III for MTS-only candidates); DEST standard from the letter of 19.12.2022; 2026 dates from the DoP calendar of 23.04.2026; vacancies from Tamil Nadu’s letter of 15.09.2026; 2026 circle results from mid-September 2026 (Uttarakhand 16.09.2026, Odisha supplementary 21.09.2026, North East 28.09.2026) (all official).
Since April 2022 the Department of Posts has run one common examination for two routes that used to be separate: MTS moving up to Postman or Mail Guard, and Gramin Dak Sevaks entering as MTS, Postman or Mail Guard. The Directorate’s letter of 05.04.2022 replaced the old annexures of 2019 with a four-paper pattern in which each post uses a different combination of papers. Getting that combination right is the difference between preparing for your merit list and preparing for someone else’s.
The exam is held without books. Papers I, II and III are written in one sitting of 150 minutes, and the Data Entry Skill Test is held on a later date for those shortlisted. Since a Directorate letter of 10.07.2024, a candidate who wants to be considered only for MTS does not sit Paper-III, so for them the exam is Paper-I alone. Circles are told to complete Postman and Mail Guard appointments before anyone selected as MTS is appointed.
The four papers
| Paper | Marks / time | For | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| I — Basic postal knowledge and general awareness | 100 / 60 min | MTS, Postman, Mail Guard | Merit (MTS); merit with Paper-II (Postman, Mail Guard) |
| II — Knowledge of postal operations | 50 / 30 min | Postman, Mail Guard only | Merit, added to Paper-I |
| III — Knowledge of local language | 50 / 60 min | Postman, Mail Guard (removed for MTS-only candidates, 10.07.2024) | Qualifying |
| IV — Data Entry Skill Test | 25 / 15 min | Postman, Mail Guard only | Qualifying |
Official: DoP letter 05.04.2022, Annexure-I, parts I and II, as modified by letter 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 10.07.2024.
Paper-I: what the 100 marks are made of
| Part | Block | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Post Office Guide Part I (organisation, post offices, business hours, postage, packing and posting, addressing, post boxes, letter box peon, official and prohibited articles, products and services) | 23 | 46 |
| A | Postal Manual Volume V (definitions) | 7 | 14 |
| B | General awareness: Indian geography, civics, general knowledge, Indian culture and freedom struggle, ethics and moral study (1 to 3 each) | 10 | 20 |
| B | Basic arithmetic: BODMAS, percentage, profit and loss, simple interest, average, time and work, time and distance, unitary method (1 to 2 each) | 10 | 20 |
| Total | — | 50 | 100 |
Official: DoP letter 05.04.2022, Annexure-I, part III. Every Paper-I question carries 2 marks; Part A is 60 marks and Part B 40.
From the table above. Unlike the PA/SA paper, this one has no reasoning section.
The shape is very different from the PA/SA paper. Almost half the marks come from one book, the Post Office Guide Part I, and there is no reasoning at all. Each question is worth two marks, so a single slip costs twice what it does in the PA/SA paper. Paper-II adds 25 more questions of 2 marks on postal operations for Postman and Mail Guard candidates, in 30 minutes.
Who is ranked on what
| Post | Merit on | Must also qualify | Paper-I qualifying (UR / OBC-EWS / SC-ST-PwD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTS | Paper-I only | Nothing else since 10.07.2024 (Paper-III removed for MTS) | 40% / 37% / 33% of Paper-I |
| Postman / Mail Guard | Paper-I + Paper-II (out of 150) | Paper-III and the DEST | 40% / 37% / 33% of the two papers together |
Official: DoP letter 05.04.2022, Annexure-I, parts I(9) and II(b) to (e); letter 10.07.2024 for the MTS change. The 2022 letter applies the Postman / Mail Guard qualifying percentage to the total of Paper-I and Paper-II, not to each paper.
| Threshold | UR | OBC / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTS, Paper-I (of 100) | 40 | 37 | 33 |
| Postman / Mail Guard, Paper-I + II (of 150), our arithmetic | 60 | 55.5 | 49.5 |
| Paper-III, language (of 50), Postman / Mail Guard only | 40% | 37% | 33% |
| DEST (of 25), from 19.12.2022 | 75% | 75% | 60% |
Percentages official (letters 05.04.2022 and 19.12.2022); the marks out of 150 are our arithmetic. The 2022 letter set the DEST at 60% / 60% / 50%; the 19.12.2022 letter raised it for exams notified from 1 January 2023.
Deleted questions lower those figures, and circles do not all delete the same number. Uttarakhand’s 2026 result of 16.09.2026 deleted 5 Paper-I questions, so Paper-I became 90 and Paper-I + II 140, and it fixed the qualifying marks at 56 (UR, and OBC and EWS) and 46.20 (SC, ST and PwD) of 140, with 20 and 16.50 of 50 in Paper-III and 18.75 and 15 of 25 in the DEST. It applied the UR mark to OBC and EWS because the LDCE is a promotion.
One caution on OBC and EWS. The 2022 letter prints 37% for them, and that fits the GDS route, which the rules treat as direct recruitment. For MTS moving to Postman — a promotion — Tamil Nadu’s 2026 PA/SA result shows how circles now handle promotions: no reservation in promotion for OBC and EWS, so the UR mark applied. Check your own circle’s result memo for which mark it used in the promotion quota.
Where other pages get this wrong
Postman and Mail Guard candidates are ranked on Paper-I plus Paper-II, and their DEST is 600 key depressions.
Commonly published instead: Merit on “Paper-I only” for Postman and Mail Guard, and a DEST of 1,000 key depressions — including on an older page of this site that still follows the 2019 pattern.
The 05.04.2022 letter says performance in Paper-I and Paper-II combined decides selection as Postman or Mail Guard, and Paper-I alone only for MTS. The 1,000-depression DEST belongs to the PA/SA exam; the Postman / Mail Guard test is 600 under both the 2022 letter and the 19.12.2022 letter.
Postman / Mail Guard and MTS: check your marks
Enter your expected Paper-I (out of 100) and Paper-II (out of 50) marks. Postman and Mail Guard merit is the two added together; MTS merit is Paper-I alone.
Qualifying marks from DoP letter 05.04.2022: 40% UR, 37% OBC/EWS, 33% SC/ST/PwD — on Paper-I for MTS (40, 37, 33 of 100) and on Paper-I plus Paper-II for Postman / Mail Guard (60, 55.5, 49.5 of 150, our arithmetic). Paper-I and Paper-II questions carry 2 marks each. Postman / Mail Guard candidates must also qualify Paper-III (language) and the DEST separately; since 10.07.2024 MTS-only candidates do not sit Paper-III. In a promotion quota a circle may apply the UR mark to OBC/EWS, as Tamil Nadu did for PA/SA in 2026.
Who sits the DEST
Candidates who reach the combined Paper-I + II mark and qualify in Paper-III separately are eligible for the DEST. The 2022 letter fixed the number called at five times the Postman and Mail Guard vacancies; the letter of 19.12.2022 changed the shortlist to three times the vacancies, and circle notifications now print three times for this exam too — Andhra Pradesh’s 2025 Postman / Mail Guard notification of 16.07.2025 says “3 times of the total vacancy of Postman and Mail Guard”. The DEST is held only in English, for 15 minutes, on a computer.
The language paper
Paper-III tests the local language of the circle: 15 one-mark questions translating English words into the local language, 15 the other way, a letter of 40 to 50 words (10 marks) and a short paragraph (10 marks). Only Postman and Mail Guard candidates sit it now. In the divisions covering Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya it is replaced by an English comprehension (10 questions of 2 marks), a letter in English (15 marks) and a paragraph (15 marks). A letter of April 2023 lets North East circle candidates choose Hindi, English, Manipuri, Mizo or Bengali.
| Circle | Local language |
|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh | Telugu |
| Assam | Assamese / Bengali / Bodo |
| Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan | Hindi |
| Gujarat | Gujarati |
| Jammu and Kashmir | Urdu |
| Karnataka | Kannada |
| Kerala | Malayalam |
| Maharashtra (Goa: Marathi / Konkani) | Marathi |
| North East | Hindi / English / Manipuri / Mizo / Bengali (option, 2023 letter) |
| Odisha | Odia |
| Punjab (Chandigarh: Hindi / English) | Punjabi |
| Tamil Nadu (with Puducherry except Mahe and Yanam) | Tamil |
| Telangana | Telugu |
| Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand | Hindi |
| West Bengal (Sikkim: Nepali; Andaman and Nicobar: Hindi / English) | Bengali |
Official: DoP letter 05.04.2022, Annexure-II (consolidated list), and the North East letter of April 2023.
Two letters removed language papers, and they are easy to mix up. The Directorate’s letter of 10.07.2024 removed Paper-III for the post of MTS only: in its words, candidates who want to be considered only for MTS “need not appear” in the local language test, while those who want Postman or Mail Guard must still sit it. The letter of 29.05.2024 removed the language paper from the separate PA/SA exam. Neither removes Paper-III for Postman or Mail Guard, so prepare for it if you are opting for either post.
2026: dates and one circle’s vacancies
In 2026 the Directorate issued the model notification for the common exam on 26.05.2026, circles notified on 01.06.2026, applications closed on 22.06.2026 and the exam was held on Sunday 12.07.2026. Tamil Nadu published its provisional Postman vacancies on 15.09.2026, and its letter shows the rule for Postman posts: half by the LDCE among MTS, half by the competitive exam limited to GDS.
| Region (Tamil Nadu) | By LDCE among MTS | By exam limited to GDS | Postman total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai City | 99 | 87 | 186 |
| Central | 29 | 26 | 55 |
| Southern | 27 | 30 | 57 |
| Western | 34 | 34 | 68 |
| Circle total (our sum) | 189 | 177 | 366 |
Official: Tamil Nadu REP/5-2/2026 dated 15.09.2026, consolidation of Postman vacancies. Regional totals are from the consolidation table; the circle row is our sum. Category splits are not reproduced because the scan’s column totals do not all agree with its rows.
Circle results for the 2026 exam began arriving in mid-September. Uttarakhand declared its MTS-to-Postman and Mail Guard LDCE result on 16.09.2026, after a DEST on 15.09.2026; Odisha issued a first supplementary result on 21.09.2026 (its DEST was on 30.08.2026); and North East Circle declared its LDCE and GDS competitive exam result on 28.09.2026. Look for yours on the India Post circle page, and for a supplementary list if a selected candidate declines.
Two things stand out. The GDS share is almost as large as the MTS share, so the GDS route into the Postman cadre is not a residual one, as it is for PA/SA. And Chennai City region alone has half the circle’s Postman posts, which is worth knowing when you rank regions and divisions in your preferences.
Practise it, don't just read it
Paper-I here has 20 marks each of general awareness and arithmetic. The library’s arithmetic and general-awareness quizzes are built on the same topic lists.
The ProSyllabus India Post PA/SA library has 13 ten-question quizzes: two on basic arithmetic (percentage, profit and interest; number system, ratio, work and speed), three on general awareness (Indian geography; polity and civics; Indian culture and the freedom struggle), one on ethics and conduct, one on the organisation of the Department and the Citizen’s Charter, three on products and services (Postal Life Insurance and social-security schemes; money remittance and India Post Payments Bank; Speed Post, parcels and value-added services), one on IT modernisation, and two on savings schemes. There is no reasoning quiz yet.
What is the exam pattern for MTS to Postman?
Paper-I (100 marks, 60 minutes), Paper-II on postal operations (50 marks, 30 minutes), Paper-III on the local language (50 marks, 60 minutes, qualifying) and a DEST (25 marks, 15 minutes, qualifying).
Do MTS-only candidates sit the language paper?
No. Since the Directorate letter of 10.07.2024, candidates who want to be considered only for MTS do not sit Paper-III; it is required only for Postman and Mail Guard.
Is Postman merit based on Paper-I only?
No. Postman and Mail Guard merit is Paper-I plus Paper-II, out of 150. MTS merit is Paper-I only.
How many key depressions are in the Postman DEST?
600, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes.
What is the DEST qualifying mark for Postman?
75% for UR, OBC and EWS and 60% for SC, ST and PwD, for exams notified from 1 January 2023.
Is there reasoning in the Postman exam?
No. Paper-I has the Post Office Guide Part I, Postal Manual Volume V, general awareness and basic arithmetic.
How many marks is each question in Paper-I?
Two marks. Paper-I has 50 questions for 100 marks.
Does the GDS to MTS exam have a DEST?
No. The DEST is for Postman and Mail Guard only; MTS selection uses Paper-I alone, and since 10.07.2024 MTS-only candidates do not sit Paper-III.
How long is the exam sitting?
Papers I, II and III are written in one sitting of 150 minutes for Postman and Mail Guard candidates; the DEST is on a later date.
When was the 2026 Postman / Mail Guard exam?
Sunday 12 July 2026.
Is the 2026 Postman / Mail Guard result out?
In several circles, yes: Uttarakhand declared on 16.09.2026, Odisha issued a first supplementary result on 21.09.2026 and North East Circle declared on 28.09.2026. Each circle declares its own.
How are Postman posts split between MTS and GDS?
Half by the LDCE among MTS and half by the competitive exam limited to GDS, as Tamil Nadu’s 2026 vacancy letter shows.
