Checked 29 September 2026. From ONGC Advts 6/2022, 1/2024, 1/2025 and 2/2026 (R&P), their CBT syllabi and ONGC’s recruitment-notice listing, plus GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, Oil India and 16 other GATE-route adverts. ONGC had published no Advt 2/2026 result by 28 September 2026. The eligibility checker and the syllabus comparison are ours.
For years the standard advice to a petroleum engineering student was simple: write GATE PE, score well, get into ONGC. That route has not been open since 2024, though a future notice could change it. ONGC’s last large GATE-based intake was Advt 6/2022 on GATE-2022 scores, with 71 posts earmarked for Petroleum graduates. Its GATE-2023 round (Advt 1/2024) had only 3 Petroleum posts, all carried forward from 2021. Since Advt 1/2025 (10 January 2025) ONGC has run E1 recruitment through its own computer-based test, with no GATE score involved: 25 Petroleum posts in 2025 and 9 in the latest round, Advt 2/2026, whose CBT was held on 6 September 2026. This guide sets out every round document by document, the CBT pattern and syllabus, the age and eligibility rules, and what GATE PE is still for.
ONGC advertisements 6/2022, 1/2024, 1/2025 and 2/2026 (R&P).
Where other pages get this wrong
ONGC has not recruited petroleum engineers on a GATE score since its GATE-2023 round (3 carried-forward posts, Advt 1/2024). Advts 1/2025 and 2/2026 select on ONGC’s own CBT (85 marks) plus an interview (15 marks). No other PSU advert checked for 2024–2027 offers a fresher Petroleum Engineering post on a GATE PE score.
Commonly published instead: Many GATE PE guides, including older pages on this site, still call ONGC the main PSU route “on GATE scores” (one gives a General selection score of about 800) and list IOCL, Oil India, HPCL, BPCL and GAIL as recruiters through GATE PE.
ONGC Advts 1/2024, 1/2025 and 2/2026; GAIL ET adverts for GATE-2025, 2026 and 2027 (Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical only); IOCL 2025/01 and 2026/01 and HPCL 3/2025-26 (own CBTs, no Petroleum discipline); Oil India 2026-02 (one experienced post).
Every ONGC round for petroleum engineers, 2022–2026
ONGC’s recruitment-notice page lists GATE-based Graduate Trainee rounds every year from 2018 to 2021, then three documents that tell the story of the change. The table below reads each advertisement directly. “Petroleum posts” counts only posts whose essential qualification is a degree in Petroleum or Applied Petroleum Engineering; a petroleum graduate could also apply to posts open to any engineering branch, such as the 32 Materials Management Officer posts of 2022.
| Round | Selection basis | Key dates | Petroleum posts | All posts in the advert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advt 6/2022 (R&P) | GATE-2022 score + interview | Registration posted 22 Sep 2022; cut-offs published 27 Dec 2022 | 71 (Cementing 4, Drilling 20, Production 32, Reservoir 15 of 33) | 871 |
| Advt 1/2024 (R&P) | GATE-2023 score (60) + qualification (25) + interview (15) | Posted 29 Feb 2024; virtual interviews 10–11 Mar 2024 | 3 (AEE Drilling, UR 1, SC 1, ST 1) | 25, all carried forward from Advts 2/2021 and 3/2021 |

The last big GATE round: Advt 6/2022, post by post
The GATE-2022 round is the one most people remember, and it is why “ONGC through GATE” still circulates. It advertised 871 posts in all. Four post types named Petroleum Engineering in their qualification. The Reservoir post was shared: 15 of its 33 vacancies were earmarked for Petroleum and Applied Petroleum graduates. All carried the E1 pay scale of ₹60,000–1,80,000.
| Post (Advt 6/2022) | Total | UR | OBC | SC | ST | EWS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AE (Cementing) – Petroleum | 4 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| AEE (Drilling) – Petroleum | 20 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| AEE (Production) – Petroleum | 32 | 14 | 8 | 5 | 2 | 3 |
| AEE (Reservoir), Petroleum share of 33 | 15 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Total earmarked for Petroleum | 71 | 30 | 19 | 10 | 5 | 7 |
ONGC Advt 6/2022 (R&P), post table. Totals by category are our sums of the four rows.
The GATE-2023 round was different in kind. Advt 1/2024 filled only 25 vacancies, every one “carried forward” unfilled from the 2021 rounds, and just three were for petroleum graduates (AEE Drilling: UR 1, SC 1, ST 1). It also used a composite merit: GATE score 60 + qualification 25 (20 for the degree, 5 for a higher degree) + interview 15, with a 1:5 shortlist and virtual interviews on 10–11 March 2024. Age was counted as on 31 July 2023: 28 for UR/EWS in Drilling and Cementing, 31 for OBC and 33 for SC/ST. ONGC gave the CTC as about ₹24 lakh.
The CBT rounds: Advt 1/2025 and Advt 2/2026 side by side
From January 2025 ONGC stopped asking for a GATE score. It now holds its own two-hour test, shortlists 1:5 for interview and ranks on CBT plus interview. The two CBT rounds differ in two ways that matter to students. Final-year students could apply in 2025 but not in 2026: Advt 2/2026 considers only candidates who already held the degree on the last date of application. And the Petroleum intake fell from 25 to 9.

Would you have been eligible for ONGC’s Petroleum stream under Advt 2/2026?
Enter your details. The check applies the rules of the latest ONGC round (Advt 2/2026): the degree, 60% marks, the degree already held on the last date of application, and the category age limit as on that date. Change the last date to test a future round, whose rules may differ.
ONGC Advt 2/2026 (R&P), paras 2 and 3: Petroleum Engineering stream 9 posts; Applied Petroleum graduates considered for 7 of the 9; minimum 60%; qualification acquired on or before the last date; maximum age as on the last date. Age is counted here in completed years. The advertisement’s own wording, and any date-of-birth rule in a future advert, decide your case.
The CBT: pattern, pass marks and merit
The ONGC test is shorter and gentler than GATE. It has 85 multiple-choice questions in two hours and no negative marking. Only 40 questions are on the engineering domain; the other 45 are general awareness, aptitude and English, which GATE PE candidates rarely practise. The CBT score (out of 85) and the interview (out of 15) make up the final 100.
| Part | Questions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| I — Concerned domain (Petroleum) | 40 | Syllabus published with the advert; see the next section |
| II — General Awareness | 10 | No topic list in ONGC’s syllabus file |
| III — Aptitude Test | 25 | No topic list in ONGC’s syllabus file |
| IV — English Language | 10 | No topic list in ONGC’s syllabus file |
| Total | 85 | MCQ only, 2 hours, no negative marking; PwBD compensatory time 20 minutes per hour |
ONGC Advt 2/2026, para 5 (the same four parts as Advt 1/2025). If the CBT runs in more than one session, ONGC normalises the scores.
| Stage | What decides it | Weight in final merit |
|---|---|---|
| CBT | Pass mark 45% (GEN/EWS/OBC) or 40% (SC/ST/PwBD); shortlist 1:5 by category, with ties at the cut-off all called | 85 |
| Group discussion | “May” be held; not qualifying | 0 |
| Personal interview | Pass mark 9/15 (GEN/EWS/OBC) or 6/15 (SC/ST/PwBD) | 15 |
| Tie-break | Higher CBT score, then the older candidate | — |
| Medical examination | Called in merit order; offer only if medically fit | — |

The ONGC Petroleum syllabus is the old GATE PE syllabus, plus field practice
The CBT’s Petroleum domain syllabus (published with Advts 1/2025 and 2/2026) reuses the pre-2027 GATE PE wording almost line for line. It still has “Solutions of one dimensional heat and wave equations”, the LNG value chain and “Waste treatment methods”. GATE 2027 drops the LNG and waste-treatment lines and replaces the heat and wave equations with the one-dimensional diffusivity equation (the heat equation’s form survives; the wave equation goes). It adds one block GATE never had, “Application in Oil & Gas Business”: surface facilities, gathering stations and field operations. And it does not contain the topics GATE 2027 has just added, such as reservoir simulation and geomechanics. So GATE PE preparation covers much of ONGC’s domain syllabus, but the overlap is with the syllabus you are being told to leave behind.
| Topic | In ONGC CBT syllabus | In GATE PE 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| GATE PE 2024–2026 syllabus (all 11 areas) | Yes, largely verbatim | Yes, revised |
| LNG value chain; waste treatment methods | Yes | No (removed) |
| Heat and wave equations (1-D) | Yes | No (now the diffusivity equation) |
| Surface facilities: separator, heater treater, crude stabilisation, storage tanks, group gathering stations | Yes (Application in Oil & Gas Business) | No |
| LPG/naphtha recovery, gas sweetening and dehydration | Yes | No |
| Workover rigs, wellhead maintenance, completion, testing and stimulation services (hydro-fracturing, nitrogen and acid jobs) | Yes | Partly (completion, stimulation, well testing) |
| Project management, oil and gas pipelines, HSE in the oil and gas sector | Yes | HSE only |
| Reservoir simulation, reservoir geomechanics, flow assurance, MPD/UBD, LWD | No | Yes (new or reworded) |

Every other recruiter we checked
The belief that “PSUs recruit through GATE PE” does not survive a reading of the adverts. GAIL, the most-cited name, takes GATE scores only in Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical and Mechanical, including in its first GATE-2027 advert of 1 September 2026. IOCL and HPCL run their own CBTs and have no Petroleum Engineering discipline for freshers. Oil India’s only 2026 post naming a petroleum degree needs nine years’ experience.
| Recruiter | Latest document | Uses GATE? | Petroleum Engineering discipline? |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAIL (Executive Trainee) | GATE-2025, GATE-2026 and GATE-2027 first advert (1 Sep 2026) | Yes | No — Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical, Mechanical only |
| IOCL | 2025/01 (5 Sep 2025) and 2026/01 (14 Aug 2026) | No, own CBT | No |
| HPCL | 3/2025-26 (version of 9 Mar 2026) | No, own CBT | Only as one option for 2 HSSE manager posts needing 9 or 12 years’ experience |
| Oil India | HRAQ/REC-EX-B/2026-02 (11 Sep 2026, closes 10 Oct 2026) | No | 1 Deputy Chief Engineer (Reservoir) post, 9 years’ experience |
| EIL, BHEL, NTPC, NHPC, NPCIL, POWERGRID, Grid-India, SAIL, NLC, NMDC, DRDO, BARC, ISRO, AAI, Coal India, DVC | Latest GATE-route advert of each (searched; not individually linked here) | Mostly yes | No |
| BPCL | Not found | Not established | Not established |
Each advert was searched for “Petroleum”. BARC’s only match is inside a chemistry qualification list. We could not obtain a BPCL advert, so we make no claim about BPCL.
So what is GATE PE for now?
Three things. First, M.Tech and PhD admission: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s M.Tech Petroleum Engineering takes only the PE paper, IIT Madras keeps 15 of its 19 Petroleum M.Tech seats for PE-paper candidates, and IIT Guwahati’s Petroleum Science and Technology takes CH or PE. Our M.Tech cut-off guide has the scores. Second, preparation that transfers: GATE PE study covers much of ONGC’s domain syllabus. Third, the CH pairing: PE is currently listed only with Chemical Engineering in GATE 2027’s tentative two-paper list, and CH is a paper GAIL still recruits on, though its Chemical discipline asks for a degree in Chemical, Petrochemical or Chemical Technology, not Petroleum Engineering.

Practise it, don't just read it
The ONGC domain section and GATE PE share their core. Drilling fluids and cementing appear in both; try our Drilling Fluid Properties and Well Cementing Operations quizzes.
The ProSyllabus GATE Petroleum library has ten topic quizzes today: Porosity and Permeability Measurement, Reservoir Drive Mechanisms, Drilling Fluid Properties, Rotary Drilling Rig Components, Well Cementing Operations, Artificial Lift Methods, Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Tubing, Hydraulic Fracturing and Well Stimulation, Well Logging and Formation Evaluation Tools and Offshore Production Platforms and Systems, each with a worked explanation for every option.
Does ONGC recruit through GATE in 2026 or 2027?
No. ONGC’s last GATE-based round was Advt 1/2024 on GATE-2023 scores, with 3 petroleum posts. Advts 1/2025 and 2/2026 select through ONGC’s own computer-based test and an interview, with no GATE score.
How many petroleum engineering posts did ONGC advertise in 2026?
Nine, in the Petroleum Engineering stream of Advt 2/2026 (UR 4, OBC 2, SC 2, EWS 1). Applied Petroleum graduates were considered for 7 of them. The CBT was held on 6 September 2026.
What is the ONGC CBT pattern?
85 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours with no negative marking: 40 domain, 10 general awareness, 25 aptitude and 10 English. Final merit is CBT 85 plus interview 15.
Can final-year students apply to ONGC?
Not under Advt 2/2026, which considered only candidates who held the degree on the last date of application. Advt 1/2025 had allowed final-year students who reached 60% by 31 July 2025, so check each new advert.
What is the age limit for ONGC petroleum engineer posts?
Under Advt 2/2026, 26 years for UR and EWS, 29 for OBC (NCL) and 31 for SC and ST, as on the last date of application, with higher limits for PwBD candidates.
Which PSUs recruit through GATE PE?
None of the PSU adverts we checked for 2024 to 2027 offers a fresher Petroleum Engineering post on a GATE PE score. GAIL uses GATE but not the PE discipline; IOCL and HPCL use their own tests.
Is the ONGC CBT syllabus the same as GATE PE?
Its Petroleum domain syllabus is the 2024 to 2026 GATE PE syllabus plus a block on oil and gas field operations. It does not include the topics added to GATE PE in 2027.
