GATE PE Marks vs Score vs Rank 2023–2026: Official Data and Calculator

Checked 28 September 2026. Every input is from the official GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports, cut-off pages and AIR pages. Score conversions, candidates at or above a mark, qualified shares and the cap arithmetic are ours. GATE 2027 values are not known until 19 March 2027.

GATE Petroleum Engineering is a small paper. In 2026 only 1,137 candidates appeared and 317 qualified. Small papers swing, and PE’s has: the General qualifying mark has gone 34.4 → 42.6 → 31.1 → 40 over four years, and the same 50 marks was worth a score of 468 in 2024 but 654 in 2025. This guide puts the four official reports side by side, shows why 2026’s cut-off landed exactly on 40, converts marks to score for every year, lists the official rank each score band reached, and gives you a calculator for your mock-test marks.

Where other pages get this wrong

The official GATE 2024 PE qualifying marks are 42.6 (General), 38.3 (OBC-NCL/EWS) and 28.4 (SC/ST/PwD). The 2026 General mark was 40, the highest the rule now allows.

Commonly published instead: Pages we checked (including older pages on this site) give the 2024 figures as 40.3 / 36.2 / 26.8, and one predicted a 2026 General cut-off of 29–33 with about 1,300–1,800 candidates appearing. The real 2026 figures were 40 and 1,137.

GATE statistical reports 2023 (IIT Kanpur), 2024 (IISc), 2025 (IIT Roorkee) and 2026 (IIT Guwahati). The 2023 report prints the column headers as “Standard Deviation / Mean” with the values 14.99 and 19.42; recomputing the mean from the marks distribution gives about 19.4, so we read the mean as 19.42. The cut-off pages match the reports.

Official qualifying marks (same as the table above).

Two things stand out. The paper is shrinking: appeared candidates fell from 1,796 to 1,137 in three years. And the 2026 cut-off was not an easy-paper accident. The mean mark rose to 27.52, the highest of the four years, while the top-candidate average stayed at 66.67, so the middle of the field did better while the top did not pull away.

Why the 2026 cut-off was exactly 40

The General qualifying mark is the mean plus one standard deviation of the marks, but never below 25 and, since GATE 2025, never above 40. In 2026, μ + σ = 27.52 + 14.29 = 41.81, which the cap brought down to 40. Without the cap, the cut-off would have been close to 2024’s 42.6, which had no cap. The OBC-NCL/EWS mark is 90% of the General one and SC/ST/PwD is two-thirds, which is why they read 36 and 26.6.

GATE 2024–2027 brochures (the cap first appears in the 2025 brochure); means and SDs from the statistical reports. The sums are ours. For 2027 the same capped rule applies, so the General mark will fall between 25 and 40.

Marks to score: the formula, year by year

PE was a single-session paper in 2023–2026, so there was no normalisation (check the 2027 schedule when it is out): your raw marks go straight into the score formula, S = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) / (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1000. Mq is the General qualifying mark and M̄t the average of the top candidates. Because both change every year, the same marks convert to very different scores. Check: 2026’s top mark of 69 gives 350 + 550 × 29 / 26.67 = 948, the published top score.

GATE PE score and rank calculator

Enter your expected marks out of 100 (after negative marking). The calculator applies the official GATE score formula using the real qualifying mark and topper average of the year you pick, and estimates a rank from that year's official mark distribution.

Estimates only. Your real score depends on the 2027 field, which is not known until the result on 19 March 2027. Qualifying marks by category are the official figures for that year. Rank is interpolated between official mark bands and is approximate.

How many candidates scored at least your marks

The reports publish how many appeared candidates fell in each 10-mark band. Summing from the top gives the number at or above a mark, which is the closest thing to a rank for a given raw mark. In 2026, 50 marks put you in roughly the top 97 of 1,137; in 2024, when the paper was easier at the top, the same 50 marks was only about the top 209 of 1,770.

Official score bands and the ranks they reached

Each report also prints the range of All India Ranks inside each 100-point score band. Two cautions. The table is titled “ranks for qualified candidates”, but its ranks run past the qualified count (to 541 in 2026, when 317 qualified), so it covers reserved-category qualifiers below 350 and more. And because the field is small, a 100-point band can hold only a handful of ranks at the top.

Reading your mock-test marks for 2027

Three practical rules follow from these tables. First, plan for a General cut-off near 40: two of the last three years sat at or near it, and the cap means it cannot go higher. Second, use 50 marks as a working benchmark for the stronger M.Tech rows, not a universal cut-off: on the 2026 field 50 marks was a score of 556, and IIT Madras’s PE-paper HTTA seats and IIT (ISM)’s first round closed at 542 in 2026 (our M.Tech guide has every row). Third, a score of 700 took about 57 marks in 2026 (the 700–800 band covered ranks 26–46) but 64.6 marks in 2024 (ranks 29–71), so a single year’s conversion is never a promise.

What is the GATE PE cut-off for 2026?

The official 2026 qualifying marks are 40 for General, 36 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 26.6 for SC, ST and PwD. The General figure is the 40-mark cap; the mean plus standard deviation was 41.81.

What was the GATE PE cut-off in 2024 and 2025?

2024: 42.6 / 38.3 / 28.4, with no cap that year. 2025: 31.1 / 27.9 / 20.7.

What GATE score do 50 marks give in PE?

By the official formula, 50 marks gave a score of 587 in 2023, 468 in 2024, 654 in 2025 and 556 in 2026.

How many marks are needed for a 700 score in GATE PE?

About 57 marks in 2026, 52.8 in 2025, 64.6 in 2024 and 57.4 in 2023, by our inversion of the official formula.

How many candidates appear for GATE PE?

1,137 appeared in 2026, down from 1,320 in 2025, 1,770 in 2024 and 1,796 in 2023.

Is GATE PE normalised?

Not in 2023–2026: PE was a single-session paper, so raw marks went straight into the score formula. The brochure normalises only multi-session papers; the 2027 session plan is not yet published.

What was the GATE PE 2026 topper’s score?

Two candidates shared AIR 1 with 69 marks and a score of 948.
