Checked 28 September 2026. From the official GATE 2027 PE syllabus (IIT Madras, PDF of 6 Jul 2026), the GATE 2026 PE syllabus (IIT Guwahati), the PE appendices of the 2024–2027 brochures and the official PE papers and keys 2023–2026. The line-by-line comparison and the question mapping are ours.
For three cycles the GATE Petroleum Engineering syllabus stood still: the PE appendices of the 2024, 2025 and 2026 brochures are identical word for word, apart from one stray paragraph in 2026. GATE 2027 rewrites it. The same eleven areas are now numbered Sections 1–11, and the text has grown from 775 to 882 words. Reservoir Engineering gains reservoir simulation, reservoir geomechanics, material-balance theory and field development; Production gains flow assurance; Drilling gains managed-pressure, underbalanced and image-assisted drilling; the LNG value chain and “waste treatment methods” are gone. This guide lists every change, then checks each one against the 2023–2026 papers. The surprise: several of the “new” lines had already been examined under older wording.
GATE 2027 and 2026 PE syllabi; official papers and keys. Word counts and the question mapping are ours.
The paper itself has not changed
The structure of the PE paper is the same in 2027 as before: 65 questions, 100 marks, three hours. General Aptitude is 15 marks; the subject is 85, of which the brochure fixes 13 marks for Engineering Mathematics in every engineering paper. PE was a single-session paper in 2023–2026; the 2027 session plan is not yet published. The current two-paper list, which IIT Madras calls tentative, pairs PE only with Chemical Engineering (CH).

Every change, section by section
The table compares the 2026 text (IIT Guwahati) with the 2027 text (IIT Madras) phrase by phrase. Unchanged lines are left out. Some changes are editorial: “drive mechanics” in 2026 was a typo for “drive mechanisms”, and 2027 introduces its own typo, “Cement Bond Long” for Cement Bond Log.

What was removed, and whether it had been asked
Two removed lines had past questions behind them. The LNG value chain was asked in 2024 (Q50, a two-mark MSQ on LNG, LPG, NGL and CNG). The heat and wave equations were never the subject of a PE question in 2023–2026 by our classification, so replacing them with the diffusivity equation costs nothing and adds a line that well testing always needed. The oddest removal is a paragraph that appeared only in 2026: “particle size and shape … centrifuge and cyclones … filtration, agitation and mixing; conveying of solids”, placed inside Production. It is absent from the 2024 and 2025 PE appendices and reads like the mechanical-operations part of the Chemical Engineering syllabus. 2027 drops it, although Stokes settling from it was asked in 2024 Q62 and 2026 Q44 in a drilling-fluid setting, and the drilling-fluid lines that remain still need it.
| Removed line | In the syllabus | Asked 2023–2026 | What to do now |
|---|---|---|---|
| LNG value chain (Production) | 2024, 2025, 2026 | 2024 Q50 (MSQ, 2 marks) | Drop it for GATE; keep it if you are also sitting ONGC’s CBT, whose syllabus still has it |
| Heat and wave equations (Maths) | 2024, 2025, 2026 | Not by our classification | Replace with the 1-D diffusivity equation (radial flow, line source) |
| Waste treatment methods (HSE) | 2024, 2025, 2026 | Not by our classification | Replace with environmental regulations and compliance |
| Particle technology paragraph (Production) | 2026 only | Stokes settling was asked in 2024 Q62 and 2026 Q44 | Keep Stokes settling: cuttings slip and drilling-fluid settling still need it |
| “Emerging deep water technologies” (Offshore) | 2024, 2025, 2026 | Offshore rigs and systems every year | Wording only; deep-water systems remain |
Official PE papers and final keys 2023–2026. The classification and the advice in the last column are ours.
“New” in 2027, but already examined
Reading the 2027 additions as untested ground would be a mistake. Six of them had already appeared in a PE paper under older syllabus headings; four of those six were not named anywhere in the old text. Treat these as established topics with past questions to practise, not as speculative extras.
| 2027 line | Past question |
|---|---|
| Flow assurance: problems and remedies (S5) | 2023 Q31 (thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors, MSQ); 2023 Q40 (organic-solid phase envelope for wax and asphaltene, 2-mark MCQ) |
| Buoyancy and stability (S6) | 2023 Q49 (buoyancy of an empty steel pipeline, NAT, 2 marks) |
| Reservoir geomechanics: stress analysis and fracturing (S4) | 2025 Q53 (effective horizontal stress gradient in a relaxed basin, NAT, 2 marks) |
| Pressure derivative analysis (S8) | 2026 Q48 (uses of Bourdet derivative type curves, MSQ, 2 marks) |
| Theory of material balance (S4) | 2023 Q52–53; 2025 Q25; 2026 Q62 |
| Gamma ray logs (S7) | 2023 Q56, 2024 Q45, 2025 Q21 (gamma-ray questions under the old log list) |
Official PE papers and keys 2023–2026; the mapping of old questions to 2027 lines is ours. Material balance and gamma-ray logs were already implied by the old text; the other four were not named in it.
And these are the lines with no 2023–2026 question behind them. They are genuinely new. Our guess, not an official statement, is that first questions on them will be conceptual rather than long numericals, but prepare both: the grid types and history matching in simulation, the difference between managed-pressure and underbalanced drilling, what an inflow test proves, why low-salinity water improves recovery, and how CO2 is held underground (structural, residual, solubility and mineral trapping).
| New 2027 line | Section | Past question 2023–2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Basics of reservoir simulation | S4 | None |
| Field development and reservoir management | S4 | None |
| Image assisted, managed pressure and underbalanced drilling | S3 | None |
| Logging While Drilling (LWD) | S7 | None |
| Inflow testing | S8 | None |
| Low salinity water flooding | S10 | None |
| Physical and chemical trapping of CO2 | S11 | None |
| Petroleum resource classification and evaluation | S2 | None |
| Environmental regulations and compliance | S9 | None |
Our classification of all 220 subject questions of 2023–2026 against the 2027 lines.
How much each section has been worth
The revision adds lines, but it does not tell you how many marks each section carries. Past papers do. The chart averages the subject marks of 2023–2026 on the 2027 sections. Reservoir Engineering, which gains the most new text, was already the heaviest section; but Drilling and Well Testing have climbed fastest, from 5 and 6 marks in 2023 to 13 each in 2026.
Our classification of the official papers and keys; the yearly figures are in the table below. Two 2024 marks (Q53, statics) match no 2027 line.

Subject marks out of 85 each year, classified by us onto the 2027 sections. Our Engineering Mathematics count (11–14) differs slightly from the brochure’s fixed 13 because some numerical-methods questions sit inside reservoir problems.
Two things the change means for you
First, old question banks are still good, with two deletions. Apart from the LNG value chain, everything examined in 2023–2026 still has a home in the 2027 syllabus (Stokes settling through the drilling-fluid lines); skip the LNG items, and use the diffusivity equation where older books teach heat and wave equations. Our previous-year papers guide maps every question. Second, ONGC’s own recruitment test still uses the old wording. Its Petroleum domain syllabus (Advts 1/2025 and 2/2026) copies the 2024–2026 GATE text, LNG value chain included, and has none of the 2027 additions. If you are preparing for both, the removed lines are not wasted.

Multiphase flow sits inside the new production-system line, and fracturing inside the new geomechanics line. Try our Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Tubing and Hydraulic Fracturing and Well Stimulation quizzes.
The ProSyllabus GATE Petroleum library has ten topic quizzes today: Porosity and Permeability Measurement, Reservoir Drive Mechanisms, Drilling Fluid Properties, Rotary Drilling Rig Components, Well Cementing Operations, Artificial Lift Methods, Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Tubing, Hydraulic Fracturing and Well Stimulation, Well Logging and Formation Evaluation Tools and Offshore Production Platforms and Systems, each with a worked explanation for every option.
Has the GATE PE syllabus changed for 2027?
Yes. It is the first substantive revision since at least GATE 2024. Reservoir simulation, reservoir geomechanics, material balance, field development, flow assurance, intelligent drilling, LWD, pressure derivative analysis, inflow testing, low-salinity flooding and CO2 trapping are added; the LNG value chain and waste treatment methods are removed.
Where is the official GATE PE 2027 syllabus PDF?
On the IIT Madras GATE 2027 site, under the syllabus links: PE_GATE2027_Syllabus.pdf. It is also an appendix of the GATE 2027 Information Brochure.
Were any removed topics asked in previous papers?
One: the LNG value chain was asked in 2024 (Q50). The heat and wave equations and waste treatment methods had no question in 2023 to 2026 by our classification.
Are the new 2027 topics completely untested?
No. Flow assurance (2023 Q31 and Q40), buoyancy (2023 Q49), in-situ stress (2025 Q53) and the pressure derivative (2026 Q48) were asked before the syllabus named them.
Did the GATE PE paper pattern change in 2027?
No. It is still 65 questions and 100 marks in 3 hours, with 15 marks of General Aptitude and negative marking only on MCQs.
Which paper can be paired with GATE PE?
Only CH (Chemical Engineering) in GATE 2027, as in 2025 and 2026.
