Alerts and Updates for GATE Petroleum Engineering

GATE 2027 is organized by IIT Madras; the official notification and brochure were released 20 July 2026 on gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The computer-based exam spans 30 papers, including Petroleum Engineering (PE), across six days: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.

GATE 2027 registration was postponed from an originally announced 14 August 2026 start; the GOAPS portal opened 27 August 2026, with the regular deadline 27 September 2026 and a late-fee window extending to 5 October 2026.

The official GATE 2027 PE syllabus, published by IIT Madras, spans 11 sections covering Petroleum Exploration, Drilling Technology, Reservoir Engineering, Production Operations, Offshore Drilling and Production Practices, Formation Evaluation, Well Testing, HSE, Enhanced Oil Recovery, and a dedicated Latest Trends section on coal bed methane, shale gas, gas hydrate and CO2 trapping.

Paper-specific exam dates and sessions (forenoon or afternoon) for PE within the six GATE 2027 test days have not yet been announced; IIT Madras is expected to confirm the schedule only with admit cards, tentatively in early January 2027.

GATE 2027 will be conducted by IIT Madras, but the official notification is still not out. As of July 11, 2026 reports point to a release in late July or August 2026, with the GOAPS application window expected to open around August 24, 2026 and close on September 29, 2026.

As per the tentative schedule circulating ahead of the notification, GATE 2027 is expected on February 6, 7, 13 and 14, 2027, as a three-hour computer-based test across 30 papers. The exact day and shift for Petroleum Engineering (PE) will be confirmed only in the official IIT Madras brochure.

Petroleum Engineering is among the toughest qualifiers on the official GATE 2026 cut-off list: 40 marks for General, 36 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 26.6 for SC, ST and PwD. Compare that with 25.2 for General in Mechanical Engineering the same year.

ONGC remains the flagship PSU route for GATE Petroleum Engineering, hiring Graduate Trainees at E1 level on GATE scores through ongcindia.com. Shortlisting is on the GATE score, followed by group discussion and personal interview; General category selections typically need a score around 800 or above.

Admissions on the current GATE 2026 score are still running. CCMT completed Round 3 in late June 2026, and its schedule lists Special Round 1 seat allotment on July 22, 2026, Special Round 2 on July 27, 2026, and a national spot round allotment on August 5, 2026.
