Checked 28 September 2026. From IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s M.Tech 2026-27 brochure and cut-off files, IIT Madras’s M.Tech brochure 2026 and cut-offs 2024–2026, IIT Guwahati’s eligibility page and COAP 2025 list, IIT Kharagpur JMP 2026, IIT Bombay’s 2026-27 minimum cut-offs and NIC’s CCMT 2025–2026 data. Marks equivalents are our arithmetic on the 2026 formula. 2027 cut-offs are not known until mid-2027.
With no fresher PSU post on a GATE PE score in the adverts we checked (see our ONGC guide), admission is now the main use of the PE score. Three IITs run a petroleum M.Tech that admits the PE paper: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (M.Tech Petroleum Engineering, 34 seats, PE paper only), IIT Madras (PE1 Petroleum Engineering, 15 seats for the PE paper) and IIT Guwahati (Petroleum Science and Technology, 40 seats shared by the CH and PE papers). IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay accept PE in safety, ocean and operations-research programmes, and CCMT lists PE in 87 programme groups at 34 institutes, none of them petroleum-named. This guide gives every published figure, converts the key ones into 2026 marks and has a lookup for your score.

Where other pages get this wrong
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is not the only dedicated petroleum M.Tech for GATE PE: IIT Madras runs M.Tech Petroleum Engineering (PE1) with 10 HTTA and 5 non-HTTA seats for the PE paper, and IIT Guwahati runs Petroleum Science and Technology for the CH or PE paper. ISM alone has 34 seats.
Commonly published instead: Pages we checked, including an older page on this site, call IIT (ISM) “the only dedicated M.Tech Petroleum Engineering program” with “~20–40 total seats”.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad: M.Tech Petroleum Engineering
ISM’s programme is the one built for petroleum graduates: it needs a B.E./B.Tech in Petroleum or Applied Petroleum Engineering and only the GATE PE paper. It has 34 seats in 2026-27. ISM’s Chemical Engineering M.Tech also accepts the PE paper; its Fuel and Energy Engineering programme does not. ISM publishes cut-off files round by round, and they show how much the score falls between the first and last round.

IIT (ISM) GATE cut-off score files for M.Tech Petroleum Engineering, printed as UR, OBC, EWS, SC, ST. We read “Session 2025” and “Session 2026-2027” as the 2025-26 and 2026-27 intakes; ISM’s labels are inconsistent. In the last file SC (116) is below ST (233) and OBC equals EWS (267), as printed.
Same figures as the table above. The last-round UR score has been 89 to 274 points below the first-round figure where both exist (ours: 542 − 453 and 542 − 268).
The lesson from the round files is to stay in COAP until the last round. A UR candidate at 460 would have missed ISM’s first round in 2026 (542) and still been above its tenth (453).
IIT Madras: PE1 Petroleum Engineering
IIT Madras admits graduates in five disciplines (CH, GG, ME, NA and PE) to its Petroleum Engineering M.Tech, but its Table 3 splits the seats by GATE paper and the PE paper has its own quota: 10 of the 14 HTTA seats and all 5 non-HTTA seats. Candidates on the CH, GG, ME or NM paper share the other 4 HTTA seats. HTTA is a half-time teaching assistantship of ₹12,400 a month for eligible students, subject to institute rules, with 8 hours of work a week; non-HTTA seats carry no assistance. From 2026 IIT Madras prints the PE-paper cut-off separately, so, like ISM’s, it is a PE-only figure.

IIT Madras M.Tech GATE cut-offs 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2024 file prints its columns as GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS; we re-ordered it by header, so copying that row by position would mislabel it.
Under Table 4 of the same brochure, a Petroleum Engineering graduate may also apply at IIT Madras to Clinical Engineering (CL1), Bioprocess Engineering (BT1), Computer Science and Engineering (CS1), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA1), a Mechanical programme (ME1) and the HS programme, each needing its own qualifying GATE paper.

CCMT: energy programmes that take the PE paper
CCMT (NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes) lists the PE paper in 87 programme groups at 34 institutes in 2026. None is a petroleum programme; the closest are energy programmes. Every CCMT closing score pools all the papers a group admits, so it is not a PE-only figure. The OPEN floor is effectively the qualifying score of 350, which on the 2026 PE paper meant 40 marks.

What those scores mean in marks
Scores are what institutes publish, but you prepare in marks. On the 2026 PE field (qualifying mark 40, top average 66.67), the key figures convert as follows. A GATE score is valid for three years, so these are indicative only: a 2025 score of the same value needed fewer marks.
| GATE score | Where it appears | Marks on the 2026 PE paper (ours) |
|---|---|---|
| 350 | Qualifying score; CCMT floor | 40.0 |
| 398 | IITM PE1N (PE paper) GEN 2026; IITG COAP 2025 OPEN | 42.3 |
| 423 | NIT Trichy Energy, OPEN lowest 2026 | 43.5 |
| 453 | ISM UR, last round (2026-27 file) | 45.0 |
| 475 | IITB Ocean Engineering minimum | 46.1 |
| 507 | IIT KGP Safety Engineering GEN 2026 | 47.6 |
| 542 | ISM UR Round 1 and IITM PE1Y (PE paper) GEN, 2026 | 49.3 |

Which published M.Tech figures does your GATE PE score clear?
Enter your GATE score and category. The check runs against 21 published rows from IIT (ISM), IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and CCMT that admit the PE paper.
Official cut-off files (sources below). IIT Bombay rows are minimums to apply, not closing scores. CCMT rows are the lowest OPEN closing score in any 2026 round (our aggregation) and pool every GATE paper the programme admits; category figures for them were not collected. A blank means this page has no category figure for that row. 2027 figures will differ.
