Checked 28 September 2026. Weights are our count of the official 2023–2026 PE papers and keys; dates are from the GATE 2027 (IIT Madras) site as of 28 September 2026. The PE exam day and session are not yet announced. Marks-to-score conversions use the 2026 formula and will differ in 2027.
It is 131 days from 28 September 2026 to 6 February 2027, the first GATE 2027 exam day: about 18.7 weeks. The PE paper’s own day is not yet announced, so this plan fits 18 full weeks before February and leaves the exam week for rest. Each section gets time in proportion to the marks it actually carried across the four official papers of 2023–2026, not to how long its syllabus text is. The 2027 syllabus changes are built in: new lines go into the weeks of their sections, and removed topics are dropped.
Our counts from the official papers and keys; conversions ours on the 2026 formula.
Where the marks are: the weights behind the plan
The subject part carries 85 marks and General Aptitude 15. Averaged over four papers, Reservoir, Maths and Production take about 40 of the 85 subject marks. The last two papers moved marks towards Drilling, Production and Well Testing and away from Reservoir, Offshore and EOR. That drift is shown in the third column but not used for the plan’s weights, because two papers are too few to call it a trend.
| Section (2027) | Average marks 2023–2026 | Average 2025–2026 | Share of study time (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 Engineering Mathematics | 12.50 | 13.5 | 12.6% |
| S2 Petroleum Exploration | 4.00 | 3.0 | 4.0% |
| S3 Oil and Gas Well Drilling | 8.75 | 12.0 | 8.8% |
| S4 Reservoir Engineering | 15.75 | 14.0 | 15.8% |
| S5 Petroleum Production Operations | 12.00 | 14.5 | 12.1% |
| S6 Offshore Drilling and Production | 5.25 | 2.0 | 5.3% |
| S7 Petroleum Formation Evaluation | 8.75 | 9.0 | 8.8% |
| S8 Oil and Gas Well Testing | 8.75 | 12.0 | 8.8% |
| S9 HSE in Petroleum Industry | 3.50 | 3.0 | 3.5% |
| S10 EOR Techniques | 4.25 | 1.5 | 4.3% |
| S11 Latest Trends | 1.00 | 0.5 | 1.0% |
| General Aptitude | 15.00 | 15.0 | 15.1% |
Our classification of the official papers. Subject rows average 84.5 marks, not 85, because two 2024 marks (Q53, a statics question) fit no 2027 section. Shares are each average divided by 99.5.
Same figures as the table above.
The 18 weeks
Weeks run Monday to Sunday from 28 September. Maths comes first because it is steady at 11–14 marks and its tools (ODEs, numerical integration, the diffusivity equation) are used in the reservoir and well-testing weeks. The last six weeks are full papers and repair, because the paper repeats its question shapes: see the four-year paper analysis.

What the syllabus change means for your weeks
| Change in 2027 | Where in the plan | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Heat and wave equations replaced by the 1-D diffusivity equation | Week 2 | Drop heat/wave drill; learn the diffusivity equation, which well testing also uses |
| Reservoir simulation added | Week 5 | Mathematical models, finite differences, Cartesian and radial grids, black-oil simulation, history matching |
| Flow assurance added; production-system analysis reworded | Weeks 6–7 | Nodal analysis (already in the 2026 text and examined) plus hydrates, wax, asphaltene, scale |
| Geomechanics wording added | Week 12 | In-situ stresses, fracture pressure; pairs with fracturing |
| LNG value chain, waste treatment and the particle-technology paragraph removed | — | Do not study them for GATE (ONGC’s CBT syllabus still lists LNG and waste treatment) |
| Environmental regulations and compliance added to HSE | Week 11 | Read alongside the HSE week |

How many marks do you need?
Targets are set in marks, but institutes publish scores. On the 2026 PE field (qualifying mark 40, top-candidate average 66.67) these were the conversions. Because MSQs carry no partial credit and MCQs carry negative marks, our own rule of thumb is to aim about 5 raw marks above the marks your target needs; it is a margin, not a statistic.
| Target | GATE score | Marks on the 2026 paper |
|---|---|---|
| Qualify (GEN) | 350 | 40.0 (official cut-off) |
| IITM PE1 non-HTTA, GEN, 2026 | 398 | 42.3 (ours) |
| ISM last round, UR (“Session 2026-2027” file) | 453 | 45.0 (ours) |
| ISM round 1 UR and IITM PE1 HTTA GEN, 2026 | 542 | 49.3 (ours) |
| A 700 score | 700 | 57.0 (ours) |
Inversion of the official score formula with the 2026 PE values; 2027 values will differ. Cut-offs from IIT (ISM) and IIT Madras; see the M.Tech guide.
Scoring 49 means leaving about half the paper, and the four-year pattern shows which half. Reservoir, Production, Maths and General Aptitude average about 55 marks between them; secure those before chasing Offshore or EOR, which carried only 1–3 marks each in 2025–2026. For the institutes behind these numbers, see M.Tech after GATE PE.
The formula checklist
GATE PE formula checklist: tick when you can derive and apply it

Two habits pay on this paper. First, NAT answers need the right units and rounding, and PE keys give narrow ranges (for example 0.25 to 0.27 in 2024 Q56), so carry four figures until the last step. Second, MSQs are all or nothing: in 2026 there were 23 MSQ marks and two MSQs had only one correct option, so tick only what you can defend.
| Question type | 2026 marks | Negative marking | Planning rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ | 30 | Yes (1/3 of the marks) | Skip a 4-option guess you cannot narrow to two |
| MSQ | 23 | No | Exact set only; no partial credit |
| NAT | 32 | No | Always attempt; mind the key range |

If you are also preparing for ONGC’s own CBT, add its GA, aptitude and English parts and the “Application in Oil & Gas Business” block; our ONGC guide sets out what differs.
Practise it, don't just read it
Weeks 3–12 each end with a section. Close every week with a quiz on that section, starting with Reservoir Drive Mechanisms and Well Logging and Formation Evaluation Tools.
The ProSyllabus GATE Petroleum library has ten topic quizzes today: Porosity and Permeability Measurement, Reservoir Drive Mechanisms, Drilling Fluid Properties, Rotary Drilling Rig Components, Well Cementing Operations, Artificial Lift Methods, Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Tubing, Hydraulic Fracturing and Well Stimulation, Well Logging and Formation Evaluation Tools and Offshore Production Platforms and Systems, each with a worked explanation for every option.
How many weeks are left for GATE PE 2027?
From 28 September 2026 to the first exam day, 6 February 2027, is 131 days, about 18.7 weeks. The PE paper’s own date has not been announced.
Which GATE PE sections carry the most marks?
Averaged over 2023–2026, Reservoir Engineering (15.75), Engineering Mathematics (12.5) and Production Operations (12), out of 85 subject marks; General Aptitude adds 15.
How many marks are needed for a 542 score in GATE PE?
On the 2026 values, about 49.3 marks (our calculation). 542 was the round-1 UR figure at IIT (ISM) and the GEN HTTA figure for PE-paper candidates at IIT Madras in 2026.
Should I study the LNG value chain for GATE PE 2027?
No. It was removed from the 2027 syllabus, along with waste treatment methods and the particle-technology paragraph. ONGC’s CBT syllabus still lists LNG.
Is there negative marking on GATE PE MSQs?
No, but there is no partial credit either: an MSQ scores only if the selected set is exactly right. Only MCQs carry negative marks.
