Checked 26 September 2026. From the official GATE 2027 IN syllabus (IIT Madras, PDF created 6 Jul 2026) and the GATE 2026 IN syllabus (IIT Guwahati), compared phrase by phrase (our diff), and a text search of the official IN papers 2023–2026. The two-paper combinations are marked tentative.
Of the core engineering papers IIT Madras revised for GATE 2027, Instrumentation changed the most. The official IN syllabus grew from 867 words to 1,023 (our count), and all ten sections were touched: the three-phase induction motor is gone, replaced by power electronics and permanent-magnet machines; digital electronics now includes embedded programming, IoT and “basic AI applications in instrumentation”; maths adds tensors, Bayes’ theorem and backpropagation. Several pages still print the 2026 text as the 2027 syllabus. This guide lists every change and what to do about it.

Where other pages get this wrong
The 2027 IN syllabus (IIT Madras, published July 2026) removes three-phase induction motors, control-valve sizing, the synchro pair, hydraulic/pneumatic components and open-channel flow meters, and adds power electronics, PMSM, IoT, AI applications and more.
Commonly published instead: Careers360’s “GATE 2027 Syllabus for Instrumentation Engineering (IN)” page (updated 10 Aug 2026; checked 26 Sep 2026) prints the 2026 text, including “Three-phase induction motors” and “sizing of control valves”, and its FAQ answers “No, GATE IN syllabus is yet to be released.”; its syllabus-changes article (updated 24 Aug 2026) says “IIT Madras has not deleted any topics for any GATE paper”.

Our phrase-level comparison of the official GATE 2026 IN syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and GATE 2027 IN syllabus (IIT Madras), page headers removed. The brochure’s IN appendix is word-for-word the standalone PDF. Section names are unchanged.
Two themes run through the list. The paper is moving towards modern electronic instrumentation — power converters and drives in place of the induction motor, ADC specifications, embedded systems, IoT, digital storage oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers — and away from older process hardware such as control-valve sizing, synchros and hydraulic components. Several topics also moved between sections (DCS and PLC to Control; comparators and Schmitt triggers to Analog; the 4–20 mA transmitter to Communication), so section-wise weightage tables built on 2026 boundaries will not map cleanly onto 2027.
Have the new topics ever been asked?
| New in 2027 | In IN papers 2023–2026? |
|---|---|
| PMSM, buck/boost, rectifiers, inverters, PWM, position/speed/current sensing | No hits |
| Maxwell’s equations, B-H curve | No hits |
| Tensors, Bayes’ theorem, backpropagation | No hits |
| ECL, CMOS gates, finite state machines | ECL asked once (2023 Q22, “fastest logic family”); the rest no hits |
| INL, DNL, ENOB, dynamic range, programmable-gain amplifier | No hits |
| Embedded programming, virtual instrumentation, IoT, AI applications | No hits |
| DSO, spectrum analyser, energy meter; noise types, grounding | No hits |
| NIR sensing; supervisory control, DCS, PLC | No hits |
Our text search of the official IN question papers 2023–2026 (the text extraction loses equations, so “no hits” is indicative).
| Removed topic | Last asked |
|---|---|
| Three-phase induction motor | 2024 Q62 (2 marks, slip at maximum torque); 2025 Q46 (2 marks, torque-speed) |
| Control-valve sizing | Control-valve characteristic 2024 Q12 (control valves stay; “sizing” goes) |
| Zener diode (by name) | 2024 Q23, 2025 Q35 — still covered by “types of diode and their applications” (our reading) |
| DC shunt generator | 2023 Q35 — in neither the 2026 nor the 2027 syllabus |
Our reading of the official IN papers against the 2027 syllabus.
So there are two jobs. First, drop the induction motor — it carried 2 marks in both 2024 and 2025 and is now off the syllabus — and treat control-valve sizing, synchros and hydraulic components as deprioritised. The syllabus defines what is examinable, but past IN papers have carried the odd question outside it (2023’s DC-generator question was in neither syllabus), so removed topics are unlikely rather than impossible. Second, learn the new blocks from textbooks, because there are no previous IN questions to practise from: the power-electronics set (buck/boost, rectifiers, single-phase inverters, PWM, PMSM) and the ADC/embedded/IoT set are the largest. The AI line is narrow — sensor linearisation, calibration and tuning, signal classification — and backpropagation sits in the numerical-methods head of maths.

Marks by section in the official IN papers, our classification using the 2026 section boundaries (the previous-papers guide in this series has the method). General Aptitude 15 every year; Engineering Mathematics is fixed at 13 marks by the GATE 2027 brochure, though our count gives 14 in 2025 (a classification call).

Two papers? IN’s partners for 2027
| Year | Second papers allowed with IN as first |

| GATE 2026 | BM, EC, EE, ME |
| GATE 2027 (tentative) | BM, EC, EE, ME, RA |
GATE 2026 brochure; GATE 2027 brochure Table 4 and two-paper combinations page.
The new option is IN + RA. The Robotics & Automation paper has 15 marks of General Aptitude, a common Part A of 60 marks and a Part B of 25 marks with an “Electrical” or “Mechanical” choice (GATE 2027 brochure, section 7.3.5). IN’s new actuator, PLC, PWM and embedded content overlaps RA more than any other paper’s does (our reading), according to the official IN and RA syllabi, which makes RA a cheaper second paper for an IN candidate than for most. It is worth it only if a robotics programme you want asks for RA.
Practise it, don't just read it
All ten GATE IN topic quizzes sit on the part of the syllabus that did not change — measurement, sensors, signal conditioning, ADCs, control. None yet covers the new 2027 blocks (power electronics and PMSM, embedded/IoT/AI, NIR), so use the quizzes for the core and textbooks for the additions.
The ProSyllabus GATE IN library has topic quizzes on measurements, control systems, analytical and optical instrumentation, process control, signal conditioning, ADCs, transducers, op-amps, PID control and signals — the first quiz is free.
Has the GATE IN syllabus changed for 2027?
Yes — it was substantially rewritten; all ten sections changed and the text grew from 867 to 1,023 words (our count).
Is the induction motor removed from GATE IN 2027?
Yes — the three-phase induction motor block is gone; machines now cover single-phase transformers, PMSM and power electronics.
What new topics are in GATE IN 2027?
Power electronics and PMSM, Maxwell’s equations, tensors, Bayes and backpropagation, ECL/CMOS/FSMs, INL/DNL/ENOB, embedded systems, IoT, AI applications, DSO and spectrum analyser, NIR sensing and supervisory control.
Which topics were deleted from GATE IN 2027?
Three-phase induction motors, sizing of control valves, the synchro pair, hydraulic and pneumatic components, open-channel flow meters and Shannon’s sampling theorem (sampling moved to Signals).
Have the new IN topics appeared in previous papers?
Only ECL (2023); the rest have no hits in the 2023–2026 IN papers (our search).
Where is the official GATE IN 2027 syllabus?
On the GATE 2027 website (IIT Madras) and in the brochure appendix.
When is GATE IN 2027?
GATE 2027 runs on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027; IN’s date is not yet published.
Can I write IN with RA in GATE 2027?
Yes — RA is a new second-paper option with IN (tentative list).
