Checked 26 September 2026. From the GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports and cut-off pages. Scores for chosen marks and “candidates at or above” are our arithmetic from the official formula and mark tables.
GATE Instrumentation results swing hard from year to year. Its general qualifying mark went 34.8, 32.7, 25.6 and then 39.8 in four years, and the paper’s difficulty swung just as hard: in 2025 nobody scored above 65 and only 34 candidates reached 50 marks; in 2026, 1,010 did. The same 50 marks therefore put a candidate around rank 34 one year (34 candidates at or above 50) and around rank 1,010 the next (1,010 at or above 50). This guide sets out the official IN figures from the four statistical reports and has a calculator that applies GATE’s own formula to each year.

Where other pages get this wrong
The official GATE IN 2024 qualifying marks were 32.7 (GEN), 29.4 (OBC-NCL/EWS) and 21.8 (SC/ST/PwD).
Commonly published instead: PW’s GATE IN cut-off table: “GATE 2024 | 34.8 | 32.3 | 24.2”. Careers360 also labels the 2023 row “Highest Score / Highest Marks / Cut-off Marks” for what are the three category qualifying marks.

GATE statistical reports 2023 (IIT Kanpur), 2024 (IISc), 2025 (IIT Roorkee) and 2026 (IIT Guwahati). The 2024 report prints an SC/ST/PwD qualifying score of −112, which the formula cannot produce; it is omitted here. Unlike EC and EE, the 2023 IN rows are not swapped between that report’s tables.
From the table above.
How marks become a score
GATE converts marks to a score out of 1,000 with one formula: score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), where M is your mark, Mq the general qualifying mark and M̄t the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10) candidates. The qualifying mark is the larger of 25 and the mean plus one standard deviation, capped at 40 — in 2026 IN’s 23.93 + 15.87 = 39.80 sat just under that cap. IN has been a single-session paper in every year from 2023 to 2026 — the statistical reports name only CS and CE (in 2023, CE alone) as multi-session papers — so IN marks were not normalised. Because the 2026 qualifying mark was so high, low marks produced negative scores: a score of 0 needed about 14 marks in 2026 (our arithmetic), and 32% of those who appeared finished with a score below zero.
GATE IN score and rank calculator
Enter your expected marks out of 100 (after negative marking). The calculator applies the official GATE score formula using the real qualifying mark and topper average of the year you pick, and estimates a rank from that year's official mark distribution.
Estimates only. Your real score depends on the 2027 field, which is not known until the result on 19 March 2027. Qualifying marks by category are the official figures for that year. Rank is interpolated between official mark bands and is approximate.
Enter a mark from a full timed mock after penalties and read it against all four years. The spread is the real uncertainty: 2027’s field and paper are unknown until the result on 19 March 2027, and IN has swung in a single year from a paper whose top 0.1% averaged 59.31 marks (2025) to one where they averaged 79.87 (2026).

Our sums of the official GATE IN mark tables.
2025 and 2026 are the two extremes. The 2025 paper was so hard that 34 candidates reached 50 and four reached 60, which is why its low qualifying mark of 25.6 was not an easy year — 50 marks there was a score of about 748. The 2026 paper let 1,010 reach 50 marks, and its high qualifying mark meant 50 marks scored only about 490. Never compare raw IN marks across years; compare scores or, better, ranks.

Official score-band to rank tables for IN, GATE statistical reports 2023–2026 (2023 bands printed closed at the top).
The score bands are far steadier than the marks: a score of 600 — the top of the 500–600 band — has sat at about rank 190–230 in 2023–2025 and about rank 430 in 2026. The two official tables agree — in 2026, 50 marks converts to a score of about 490, the 400–500 band is ranks 919–1,626, and 1,010 candidates scored 50 or more. The rank lists run beyond the number who qualified — the official 2026 table’s 100–200 band ends at rank 4,587, against 2,823 qualified — because reserved-category candidates qualify at lower scores (SC/ST/PwD at a score of 167 in 2026) and, on our reading of the tables, are ranked behind every appeared candidate with more marks, qualified or not.

Appeared candidates by GATE score, GATE statistical reports 2024–2026 (a score is computed for every appeared candidate, including those below the qualifying mark).
The score table explains a number that surprises many candidates: in 2026 nearly a third of the IN field had a negative GATE score. Because the qualifying mark scores 350 and the topper average 900, a score of zero falls at about 14.3 marks when the qualifying mark is as high as 39.8 (our arithmetic), so anyone below that got a score under zero. In 2025, with a qualifying mark of 25.6, score zero sat much lower and only 808 appeared candidates fell below it. A candidate below the qualifying line gets no scorecard at all — those sub-350 and negative scores exist only in the report’s distribution. What matters is clearing the qualifying line (a score of 350 for general candidates) and then how far above it you are.
Practise it, don't just read it
In 2026, 1,128 appeared candidates sat in the 40–50 mark band just above the qualifying line — the most crowded band above it — and each mark there was worth about 13.7 points of score (our arithmetic). The GATE IN quizzes drill the measurement, sensor, signal-conditioning and control topics that move a candidate up through that band.
The ProSyllabus GATE IN library has topic quizzes on measurements, control systems, analytical and optical instrumentation, process control, signal conditioning, ADCs, transducers, op-amps, PID control and signals — the first quiz is free.
What was the GATE IN cut-off in 2026?
39.8 marks (general), 35.8 (OBC-NCL/EWS), 26.5 (SC/ST/PwD).
Why was the GATE IN 2025 cut-off only 25.6?
The paper was hard — the mean plus one standard deviation was 25.65 and the top mark 65 — so 25.6 was not an easy year.
What rank does 50 marks get in GATE IN?
About 1,010 in 2026, 34 in 2025, 316 in 2024 and 292 in 2023 — the number of appeared candidates at or above 50 (for 2023, above 50), so a rank near that figure rather than an exact one.
How is the GATE IN score calculated?
350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1,000.
Is GATE IN normalised?
No — it has been a single-session paper every year since 2023.
How many appeared for GATE IN 2026?
12,424 of 15,608 registered; 2,823 qualified.
How many marks for a GATE IN score of 600?
58.0 in 2026, 40.9 in 2025, 52.4 in 2024 and 2023 (our arithmetic).
When is the GATE 2027 result?
19 March 2027.
