Checked 29 October 2026. As of 29 October 2026 the ministry has not published the IMAT 2027 decree, so the 2027 date, registration window and places are unknown. Every date on this page is from the 2026 cycle (DM 1005/2026 and the universities’ 2026/27 calls) unless it says 2027. Day counts are our arithmetic. This page will be updated when the 2027 decree is published.
If you are searching for the IMAT 2027 date, here is the honest answer: on 29 October 2026 it has not been published. For 2026, a decree of Italy’s Ministry of University and Research (MUR), DM 1005/2026, set the test date, the registration window and the number of places; the 2027 arrangements are not yet known, and the 2027 decree is not out yet. What we do have is the 2026 cycle, set out in Ministerial Decree 1005 of 6 August 2026 and in the universities’ own calls. This guide gives you those 2026 dates as a reference, clearly labelled, separates the dates that have passed from those still to come, explains who sits the test and how places are published, and lists what you can do now so that you are ready when the 2027 decree appears.
DM 1005/2026, art. 2(3); MUR circular for international students 2026/27 and 2027/28. Window length is our count, 26 August to 9 September 2026 inclusive.
What is not yet published for IMAT 2027
The table below separates what is known for 2027 from what is not. "Not yet published" means we could not find it in any official source on 29 October 2026. Anything you read elsewhere that gives an exact 2027 date before the ministry publishes one is a guess.
| Item for 2027 | Status on 29 October 2026 | What 2026 showed |
|---|---|---|
| The 2027 ministerial decree | Not yet published | DM 1005 was signed on 6 August 2026 |
| Test date | Not yet published | 29 September 2026, 13:30 Italian time |
| Registration window on Universitaly | Not yet published | 26 August to 9 September 2026, 15:00 (GMT+2) |
| Places per university (Tabella B) | Not yet published | Published with the decree as Tabella B |
| Format, marking and syllabus | Not yet published for 2027 | 60 questions, 100 minutes, +1.5 / −0.4 / 0; syllabus in Allegato A |
| University calls (bandi) | Not yet published | Must be issued at least 30 days before the test (DM 1005/2026, art. 8(1)) |
| Visa deadline for 2027/28 | Published: 31 October 2027 as the national outer limit; a university may set an earlier date | 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 (MUR circular) |
| Using 2026 eligibility in 2027 | Not possible | Eligibility applies only to the current selection and gives no right in later years (DM 1005/2026, art. 3(7)) |
One more point: the MUR circular on procedures for international students already covers two academic years, 2026/27 and 2027/28. So the pre-enrolment and visa rules described below already apply to the 2027/28 intake, even though the 2027 test decree is not out.

Our count of calendar days to the test on 29 September 2026. 2026 cycle only; the 2027 gaps may differ.
Read the 2026 numbers this way. The decree was signed 54 days before the test (its date, 6 August 2026). Registration opened 34 days before the test and closed 20 days before it, so the whole window was only 15 days long, counting both the first and the last day. The national ranking was scheduled 27 days after the test. A window as short as 15 days is easy to miss if you are not watching. These gaps describe 2026 only; the ministry can publish the 2027 decree earlier or later.
In 2026 the ministry also announced the test date in a short notice before the full decree: on 3 July 2026, as the University of Bologna reported on its notice board three days later. Bologna added that its own call would be published by 31 August 2026. So the first sign of the 2027 date may again be a short ministry notice, followed weeks later by the decree and then the university calls.

Who sits the IMAT
In 2026 the IMAT was one test, with the same content in every test centre, for three English-taught courses: Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthodontics, and Veterinary Medicine (DM 1005/2026, art. 2(1)). In 2026 the decree named two groups of candidates who sit it, ranked in different ways. The table shows the 2026 rules; the 2027 decree must confirm them.
| Point | EU and EU-equivalent candidates | Non-EU candidates residing abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Who is in the group | Citizens of EU countries, and non-EU citizens covered by article 39(5) of Legislative Decree 286/1998 (as amended by Law 189/2002); the decree’s places table calls them candidates residing in Italy | Citizens of non-EU countries who live outside Italy and are not covered by article 39(5) |
| Ranking | Two national rankings by CINECA, one for Medicine and Surgery with Dentistry and one for Veterinary Medicine; you enter the one for the course group you chose (art. 3(5)) | A ranking at each university, set by that university (art. 3(5)) |
| Choice of university | You list your choices of university when you register for the test (art. 2(3)) | Only the university where you pre-enrolled on Universitaly (art. 2(3)) |
| Minimum score to be ranked | 20 points (art. 3(2)) | More than 0 points; a candidate who answered no question is not ranked (art. 3(3)) |
| Places | The first column of Tabella B | The second column of Tabella B, a separate reserved quota |
If you are not sure which group you are in, check with the university before you register: your status decides which ranking you enter and which places you compete for. The decree also asks every candidate, when they register, to choose between Medicine and Surgery with Dentistry, or Veterinary Medicine. In 2026 that choice could not be changed after registration closed (art. 1(2)).
Two more rules from the 2026 decree are worth knowing early. Candidates with a disability or a specific learning disorder (DSA) can ask for extra time and aids through the university’s call: up to 50% more time for a certified disability and up to 30% more for DSA (art. 4). Candidates living abroad who ask for these measures must present the certificate from their country of residence, legalised where international rules require it, with a translation into Italian or English that is either a sworn translation by an official translator or certified as conforming to the original by the Italian diplomatic representation (art. 4(5)). Getting this done can take time, so it is worth starting early.
How places are published
In 2026 the number of places at each university was published as Tabella B, an annex of the decree (art. 7). It has two columns of numbers for every course: places for EU candidates and non-EU candidates residing in Italy, and places for non-EU candidates residing abroad. That was the 2026 arrangement; the 2027 decree must confirm how the 2027 places are published. Here are some 2026/27 rows for Medicine and Surgery, for reference.
| University, Medicine and Surgery in English (2026/27) | EU and non-EU residing in Italy | Non-EU residing abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Bari | 89 | 11 |
| Bologna | 140 | 20 |
| Pavia | 103 | 40 |
| Rome Sapienza, Medicine and Surgery "F" | 52 | 13 |
| Ancona (Politecnica delle Marche) | 30 | 50 |
| Messina | 55 | 61 |
| Tabella B total, all Medicine and Surgery rows | 2,430 | 1,362 |
Tabella B for 2026/27 also gave 49 and 11 places for Dentistry, and 63 and 7 for Veterinary Medicine. The Medicine figures of 2,430 and 1,362 are the totals of all the Medicine and Surgery rows in Tabella B. Places at universities whose accreditation was still being assessed were conditional on a positive outcome (art. 7(2)). Our seats guide goes through Tabella B row by row.
For non-EU candidates residing abroad there are two more rules in the MUR circular that covers 2026/27 and 2027/28. The order is fixed: you submit the pre-enrolment application on Universitaly, the university validates it, and as a rule only a validation without reservation lets you apply for the study visa at the Italian embassy or consulate (the circular names two exceptions for a validation with reservation). And a university may validate no more pre-enrolment applications than its places for international students plus 20%; under the circular’s conditions, a refused visa or enrolment can free a place for a further validation. Our suggestion: do not leave pre-enrolment to the last days.

What to do between now and the decree
A checklist for the months before the 2027 decree
- Know your group. EU or EU-equivalent, or non-EU residing abroad. It decides your ranking, your places and whether you must pre-enrol.
- Choose your course type. Medicine and Surgery with Dentistry, or Veterinary Medicine. In 2026 the choice was fixed when registration closed.
- Non-EU residing abroad: pick one university. In 2026 you were ranked only where you pre-enrolled. The visa application comes after the university validates your pre-enrolment, as a rule without reservation. In 2026 Ancona asked for pre-enrolment and the visa request by 9 September 2026; each university sets its own deadline, and the visa deadline of 31 October 2027 is only the national outer limit.
- Prepare documents now. School-leaving qualification and any disability or DSA certificate with its translation.
- Language certificate. In 2026 a tie on points was broken first by section scores and then by holding a language certificate listed in Allegato 3, held by the close of registration and declared when registering (art. 3(6)).
- Study from the official syllabus. Allegato A of the 2026 decree is the best guide until the 2027 one appears.
Our suggested checklist, not official rules, built on DM 1005/2026, the Ancona call and the MUR circular. Check each point again when the 2027 decree is out.
Where to watch. The ministry publishes its decrees and notices on its own website (mur.gov.it). Registration and pre-enrolment happen on Universitaly (universitaly.it). Each university posts its call and notices on its own course pages, and in 2026 the University of Bologna reposted the ministry’s date notice within three days. Check these official pages directly, and treat any date you see elsewhere as unconfirmed until one of them publishes it.
| Signal to watch (2027) | Where | Date in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry notice of the test date | mur.gov.it; university notice boards | 3 July 2026 |
| The decree with Tabella A (countries) and Tabella B (places) | mur.gov.it | 6 August 2026 |
| Registration opens | universitaly.it | 26 August 2026 |
| Your university’s call | The university’s own website | At least 30 days before the test (art. 8(1)); Bologna said by 31 August 2026 |
| Test centre addresses and rooms | A later ministry notice and the universities’ sites (art. 2(5)) | After the decree |
Our suggestion for the waiting months is to study. The 2027 format is unknown; until the decree is out, use the 2026 format provisionally: 60 questions in 100 minutes, with biology and chemistry making up 38 of the 60. If you already sat IMAT 2026, your answer sheet shows where your points went, and our retake guide shows how to read it. Frequently asked questions
When is IMAT 2027?
The date has not been published yet (29 October 2026). In 2026 a ministry notice announced the date before the decree; the 2027 date and how it will be announced are not yet confirmed. As a reference only, IMAT 2026 was on 29 September 2026 at 13:30 Italian time.
When does IMAT 2027 registration open?
Not published yet. In 2026, registration on Universitaly ran from 26 August to 15:00 (GMT+2) on 9 September 2026, only 15 days. Watch Universitaly and the ministry website from the summer.
How many places will there be for IMAT 2027?
Unknown until the 2027 places are published; in 2026 they came in Tabella B of the decree. In 2026/27 the Medicine and Surgery rows of Tabella B added up to 2,430 places for EU and equivalent candidates and 1,362 for non-EU candidates residing abroad.
Do non-EU students register differently?
In 2026, yes. Non-EU candidates residing abroad also pre-enrolled on Universitaly at one university and were ranked only there. Under the MUR circular, the university must validate the pre-enrolment, as a rule without reservation, before you can apply for the study visa. For 2027/28 the national outer limit for visa applications is 31 October 2027, and a university may set an earlier date.
Can I use my IMAT 2026 score in 2027?
No. The 2026 decree says eligibility applies only to the selection in progress and gives no right to admission in later years (art. 3(7)). The 2027 admission rules have not been published yet.
Will the IMAT 2027 format change?
We do not know until the 2027 decree. In 2026 it was 60 five-option questions in 100 minutes: 4 reading, 5 logic, 23 biology, 15 chemistry and 13 physics and mathematics, marked +1.5, −0.4 and 0.
