After IMAT 2026: Scores 8 Oct, Ranking 26 Oct, Assigned and Reserved

Checked 29 September 2026. Dates from the calls of Parma, Bologna and Ancona under DM 1005/2026, and the MUR circular for international students. They are fixed for the 2026 cycle; ranking updates after 3 November follow on a rolling basis. Deadline arithmetic is ours.

IMAT 2026 was scheduled for Tuesday 29 September 2026 at 13:30 Italian time (17:00 in India, our conversion; the decree adjusts the start to local time abroad). What follows the test is a four-week sequence of publications — anonymous scores, your own answer sheet, then the rankings — and, for EU-pool candidates, a system of short enrolment windows that can cost you a seat if you miss one. This guide lists every official date, explains each status, and gives you a calculator for the deadlines.

IMAT 2026 countdown

Every official date from test day to the visa deadline, counted from now in your own time zone.

Dates from DM 1005/2026, the Parma, Bologna and Ancona calls and the MUR circular for international students. Publication times of day are not fixed in the calls, so the score and ranking lines count to the start of the day in Italy. The visa line is the ministry's outer limit; the circular lets universities set earlier dates.

8 October: anonymous scores

On 8 October 2026 CINECA — the consortium that sets and marks the test for the ministry — publishes every candidate's score on Universitaly, listed against the barcode on the label stuck to the answer sheet, not against a name. Keep the barcode code from the test day; it is how you find your score before the named ranking is out. Your score is fixed at this point; nothing that happens later changes it.

19 October: your answer sheet

On 19 October 2026 you can see your own answer sheet, your score and the data sheet in your reserved area on Universitaly. Check the sheet was read correctly — in particular any answer you corrected by blacking out a square, or any question you circled as an intentional blank.

26 October: the rankings

On 26 October 2026 two different things happen. CINECA publishes the national ranking, with names, for EU citizens and non-EU citizens with EU-equivalent status (art. 39(5) of Legislative Decree 286/1998). And each university publishes (by that date) its local ranking of non-EU applicants resident abroad who pre-enrolled there. The two are separate: a non-EU applicant from India appears only in the local ranking of their university.

ASSEGNATO, PRENOTATO, IN ATTESA, POSTI ESAURITI: the four statuses

In the national ranking, every candidate who scored at least 20 points is shown one of four statuses, depending on their rank and the order of preferences they listed at registration.

StatusWhat it meansWhat you must do
ASSEGNATO (assigned)You have a seat at your highest-possible preferenceEnrol within 4 days, counting the publication day and excluding weekends and holidays, or you are withdrawn from enrolment and from the ranking
PRENOTATO (reserved)You have a seat at a lower preference; a higher one may open upEither enrol there within the same 4 days — which ends your ranking at other preferences — or wait. Not enrolling does not remove you from the ranking, but you must confirm interest by 12:00 Italian time on the 5th day
IN ATTESA (waiting)No seat yetConfirm your interest by 12:00 Italian time on the 5th day, or drop out of the ranking
POSTI ESAURITI (places exhausted)No place is left at any of your preferencesNothing: the calls exclude this status from the confirmation of interest

The critical rule is the interest confirmation. Everyone still in the ranking who has not enrolled or withdrawn — other than candidates shown as POSTI ESAURITI — must log in and confirm they are still interested by 12:00 Italian time on the fifth day after each publication or update. Candidates who miss it are excluded from the ranking and lose the right to enrol, whatever the reason (Bologna and Ancona calls).

Where other pages get this wrong

ASSEGNATO means you must enrol; PRENOTATO means you may enrol or wait.

Commonly published instead: Some guides treat "reserved" as a guaranteed seat that can be claimed later.

A PRENOTATO candidate who does not enrol in the window is not excluded from the ranking (Bologna and Ancona calls), but the reserved seat itself is not held for later: after each update your status is worked out again. Keeping your place in the ranking depends on the interest confirmation.

How the 4-day window is counted

The calls count the enrolment window as four days including the day of publication, leaving out Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays (Parma's wording mentions Saturdays and holidays; Bologna's mentions Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays). The interest confirmation falls at 12:00 Italian time on the fifth counted day. Applying that rule to the first two published dates gives the deadlines below; this is our arithmetic, and your Universitaly area shows the binding date.

Enrolment and confirmation deadline calculator

Pick the date a national ranking (or an update) is published. The calculator counts the 4-day enrolment window and the 12:00 (Italian time) deadline of the 5th day to confirm interest, counting the publication day and skipping Saturdays, Sundays and Italian national holidays.

Our arithmetic on the rules in the Parma, Bologna and Ancona calls. Parma's text excludes "Saturdays and public holidays"; Bologna's and Ancona's exclude weekends and holidays — we skip Sundays too. Italian national holidays are included from 1 Sep 2026 to 31 Dec 2027. Local patron-saint days are not counted as holidays here: if your university's city has one in the window, check with the university. Always act on the date shown in your Universitaly reserved area.

Non-EU applicants resident abroad: a different track

If you are applying from India, the statuses above do not apply to you. You are ranked only at the university where you pre-enrolled, and that university runs its own procedure. The three calls we read show how much the procedures differ, so read your own university's call closely.

UniversityLocal rankingNon-EU enrolmentExtra step
Parma (course at Piacenza)By 26 Oct 202627 Oct – 10 Nov 2026First fee instalment €156; fee reduction through ER.GO by 4 Nov 2026, 17:00
Bologna26 Oct 2026, on Studenti OnlineBy 29 Oct 2026Register on Studenti Online between 10 Sep and 5 Oct 2026, 13:00 — or lose the place
Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona)26 Oct 202626 Oct – 4 Nov 2026First fee instalment €156; pre-enrolment and visa request by 9 Sep 2026

Bologna's extra step is an important one to diary: non-EU applicants resident abroad must also register on the university's own Studenti Online platform by 5 October 2026 at 13:00 Italian time. The call says that a candidate who does not register there will not be able to see the local ranking and, if admitted, will lose the place.

Where the official documents disagree

Three points in the university calls do not match the decree or each other. We print both sides; where you are affected, get the university's answer in writing.

After enrolment: the visa and the residence permit

For non-EU applicants resident abroad, a seat is only half the job. The MUR circular for international students sets 30 November 2026 as the ministerial outer deadline for study-visa applications for 2026/27, and says universities may set earlier dates for their courses. Only applicants whose pre-enrolment the university has validated may apply, and the type-D study visa is issued for 365 days with multiple entries. Bologna's call adds a warning worth knowing in advance: a student who withdraws from studies cannot reuse the residence permit issued for that enrolment and must repeat the pre-enrolment procedure.

Extra credits if you scored low in a science

Admission does not end the test's role. At Ancona, an admitted student who answered fewer than 20% of questions correctly in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics and Mathematics is given supplementary mandatory credits (OFA), met by attending intensive courses during the first year. Other universities may apply their own rules; check the call.

If you are aiming for IMAT 2027

The 2026 result is valid only for this cycle (DM 1005/2026); it cannot be carried into next year. The date of IMAT 2027 has not been published. The 2026 decree was signed on 6 August and the test held on 29 September, and the universities must publish their calls at least 30 days before the test (article 8), so the practical signal to watch for is next year's ministerial decree in the summer. The MUR circular has already fixed 31 October 2027 as the visa deadline for 2027/28.

Practise it, don't just read it

Whatever your 2026 result, the same topics come back. Keep your biology and chemistry sharp between cycles.

The ProSyllabus IMAT library has ten topic quizzes: Cell Biology, Genetics, Human Physiology and Biomolecules and Metabolism; Atomic Structure and Bonding and Stoichiometry and Solutions; Mechanics and Electricity and Thermodynamics; Mathematics; and Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving. They use four options per question, where the real paper has five, and there is no reading or general-knowledge quiz yet — treat them as topic drills, not a mock.

When is the IMAT 2026 result?

Anonymous scores by label code on 8 October 2026; your own answer sheet on 19 October; the named national ranking and the non-EU local rankings on 26 October; the first national update on 3 November.

What does "assegnato" mean in the IMAT ranking?

ASSIGNED: you have a seat at the highest preference your rank allows, and you must enrol within 4 days counting the publication day and excluding weekends and holidays, or you are withdrawn from enrolment and from the ranking.

What does "prenotato" mean?

RESERVED: you have a seat at a lower preference. You can enrol within the same window, which ends your ranking at other preferences, or wait for a better one to open up. Waiting does not remove you from the ranking, but you must still confirm interest by 12:00 Italian time on the 5th day.

What happens if I do not confirm my interest?

If you are still in the ranking and have not enrolled or withdrawn, you must confirm your interest by 12:00 Italian time on the 5th day after each publication. If you miss it, you are excluded from the ranking. Candidates shown as POSTI ESAURITI are exempt.

When do non-EU students get their IMAT result?

Scores come out on 8 October like everyone else. Each university publishes its local non-EU ranking by 26 October 2026; enrolment windows differ — Parma 27 October to 10 November, Bologna by 29 October, Ancona 26 October to 4 November.

Can I use my IMAT 2026 score next year?

No. The decree says the result is valid only for the 2026 cycle.
