Checked 16 October 2026. The 2027 test list is from the Civil Service Careers online-tests page, read on 16 October 2026. Earlier formats are from Wayback Machine copies of official Fast Stream pages; each is dated by when the archive copied it. Work Strengths Test and Styles Assessment details are from the GOV.UK preparation pages, read on 16 October 2026.
If you have read that the Fast Stream starts with a work style questionnaire, you have read something out of date. The Civil Service Careers online-tests page for 2027 entry lists two tests, Work-based scenarios and the Case Study assessment, and no questionnaire. Copies of the official Fast Stream pages kept by the Internet Archive show where the idea comes from: the pages copied in 2020, 2021 and 2023 listed "Work Style Questionnaires" among the online tests. This guide sets out that history with dates, explains the two Civil Service tests that work most like a work style questionnaire today, and says what to prepare for instead. To try both 2027 formats in text, our free Fast Stream practice test scores you on one of each.
A note from us
Applying to the Fast Stream is a big step, and there is a lot to take in. We have tried to set out what is published as plainly as we can. Take it one section at a time, and come back whenever it helps.
The short answer
- Is there a work style questionnaire in the 2027 Fast Stream? Not on the official pages. The online-tests page for 2027 entry lists Work-based scenarios and the Case Study assessment only.
- Was there one before? Yes. Official Fast Stream pages copied on 1 November 2020, 17 April 2021 and 1 June 2023 list "Work Style Questionnaires" among the online tests. The copy of the online-tests page made on 11 September 2024 lists Using Data, Work-based Scenarios and the Case Study Assessment instead.
- What is closest today, in our view? The Civil Service Work Strengths Test, whose first part asks how far you agree with statements about your typical behaviour at work, and the Civil Service Styles Assessment. Both are used for Civil Service Jobs roles, not listed for the 2027 Fast Stream.
From the 2027 online-tests page, the archived official pages and the GOV.UK Work Strengths Test and Styles Assessment pages, all listed in the sources.
Is the work style questionnaire part of the Fast Stream in 2027?
No questionnaire appears on the 2027 Fast Stream pages we read: the online-tests page, the application-process page and the initial-application page. The online-tests page says there are 2 online tests to complete. One measures interpersonal skills: you watch short videos of work situations and rate how effective different actions would be. The other assesses decision-making and your ability to adapt to changing circumstances: you take on an imaginary role, review background information and respond to a series of challenges. Both are untimed, and you have 7 days to complete them from the moment they are made available.
Neither 2027 test is a questionnaire about you. Both ask you to judge how effective actions would be in work situations. That is a different task from rating how far a statement describes your own style, and it is worth preparing for as such.
How the Fast Stream online stage has changed
Each row except the last is a copy of an official page made by the Internet Archive; the date is when the archive copied the page, which is not necessarily the year of the campaign it describes. The last row is the live page as we read it.
| Page and copy date | Online tests listed | Later phases on the same page | Time allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| faststream.gov.uk How to apply, 1 November 2020 | Work Style Questionnaires and multimedia Situational Judgement Questionnaires | Work Based Scenarios (online case study and learning assessments), then a timed video interview | 5 days for the online tests, not timed |
| faststream.gov.uk How to apply, 17 April 2021 | Work Style Questionnaires and multimedia Situational Judgement Questionnaires | Work Based Scenarios (online case study and learning assessments), then a timed video interview | 5 days for the online tests, not timed |
| faststream.gov.uk How to apply, 1 June 2023 | Work Style Questionnaires, a multimedia Situational Judgement Questionnaire and a Numerical Test | Work Based Scenarios (online case study and learning assessments), then a timed video interview | 5 days for the online tests, not timed |
| Civil Service Careers Online tests, 11 September 2024 | 3 tests: Using Data, Work-based Scenarios and Case Study Assessment | Not part of this comparison | 5 days; about 90 minutes as a guide, not timed |
| Civil Service Careers Online tests, 17 May 2025 | 3 tests: Using Data, Work-based scenarios and Case Study assessment | Not part of this comparison | 5 days; about 90 minutes as a guide, not timed |
| Civil Service Careers Online tests, read 16 October 2026 (2027 entry) | 2 tests: Work-based scenarios and Case Study assessment | Not part of this comparison | 7 days, untimed |
Two things follow. The questionnaire disappears from the pages between the June 2023 copy and the September 2024 copy; we could not find an official notice saying exactly when or why. And advice written for the older format, including advice about a video interview stage or a numerical test among the online tests, does not describe the 2027 online tests.
What the old pages said about the questionnaire
Very little. The archived pages describe the online tests as multiple-choice assessments, not timed, with 5 days to complete them. They do not say what the Work Style Questionnaires measured, how many questions they had or how they were scored. We could not find an official description, so this guide does not offer one. Be cautious with any page that describes the Fast Stream questionnaire in detail without naming a source.
The closest current tests: Work Strengths Test and Styles Assessment
Two tests that GOV.UK describes for Civil Service recruitment ask you about yourself in a similar way, in our view. Neither is listed on the 2027 Fast Stream pages, but you may meet them if you also apply for other Civil Service jobs.
| Feature | Civil Service Work Strengths Test | Civil Service Styles Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An online test of your strengths: what you do regularly, what you do well and what motivates you | An online self-assessment of the effectiveness of your work behaviours, measured against the Civil Service Behaviours |
| Format | Three parts: statements about your typical behaviour and preferences at work, rated from very strongly agree to very strongly disagree; 10 scenarios with four actions each, rated on a four-point scale; 5 scenarios where you say which action you would be most and least likely to take | 276 pairs of statements; for each pair you choose which is more like you, and by how much |
| Timing | Not timed; GOV.UK says most people take two to four minutes per scenario and recommends allowing at least an hour | Not timed; GOV.UK says it may take 45 minutes to an hour |
| Result | A percentile against a representative group of applicants, with automatically generated feedback | A percentile against a representative group of applicants, with automatically generated feedback |
| Practice | An official practice test, which GOV.UK says is not scored | Example comparisons at the start, and a standalone practice assessment |
All of this is from the two GOV.UK preparation pages. Note one difference from the Fast Stream: the Work Strengths Test’s rating scale uses "Fairly Effective" where the Fast Stream page uses "Partially effective".
| Test name | What it is |
|---|---|
| Work-based scenarios | A Fast Stream online test for 2027 entry. You watch short videos of work situations and rate how effective several possible actions would be, on a four-point scale. 12 scenarios, untimed. |
| Case Study assessment | The second Fast Stream online test for 2027 entry. You take on an imaginary role, review 7 pieces of background information and respond to 24 situations, sometimes choosing the most and least effective response and sometimes rating actions. |
| Work Style Questionnaire | Not on the 2027 Fast Stream pages. Fast Stream pages archived in 2020, 2021 and 2023 listed "Work Style Questionnaires" among the online tests, described as multiple-choice, not timed, with 5 days to complete the online tests. If an invitation names it, check which recruitment it is for. |
| Using Data | Listed as one of 3 Fast Stream online tests on the pages archived in September 2024 and May 2025. It is not on the 2027 online-tests page, which lists two tests. |
| Civil Service Work Strengths Test | A Civil Service Jobs test, not a 2027 Fast Stream test. Three parts: agree-or-disagree statements about your typical behaviour and preferences at work, then 10 scenarios rated on a four-point scale, then 5 scenarios where you choose the actions you would be most and least likely to take. |
| Civil Service Styles Assessment | A Civil Service Jobs self-assessment, not a 2027 Fast Stream test. 276 pairs of statements about work behaviours; for each pair you choose which is more like you, and by how much. Untimed; GOV.UK says it may take 45 minutes to an hour. |
| Civil Service Judgement Test | A Civil Service test that GOV.UK publishes a practice test for. It is not listed for the 2027 Fast Stream. |
How to answer a work style questionnaire if you meet one
The GOV.UK page for the Styles Assessment gives the clearest official advice on a self-report test of this kind. It says to answer honestly, not to try to second-guess the "right" answer, and to answer as you really feel. It warns that responding randomly, or using one option most or all of the time, such as the middle response, is not an acceptable way of completing it, and that responses are checked for such patterns. If they follow such a pattern, your scores may not be produced and you may be asked to take the test again, up to a maximum of three attempts.
Practical points (our advice, built on the GOV.UK guidance)
- Picture a real week at work or study when you rate a statement, not the person you would like to be.
- Use the whole scale. The middle response is allowed where it is genuine, but GOV.UK warns against overusing it.
- Take it in one sitting, somewhere quiet, early in the window: GOV.UK recommends allowing at least an hour for each of these tests and sending any help requests at least two working days before the deadline.
- Try the official practice test or example questions first, so the format is not new on the day.
What to prepare for the 2027 Fast Stream instead
For 2027 entry the online-tests page lists two tests, both about judging how effective actions would be in work situations. Preparation that matches them looks like this.
Matching your preparation to the 2027 tests (our advice)
- Learn the four-point scale. Counterproductive, ineffective, partially effective and effective, with the official descriptions. Both tests use it.
- Work through the official example. It is the official example with published answers. Our work-based scenarios answers guide works it through step by step.
- Practise the Case Study’s two formats. Some situations ask for the most and least effective responses; others ask you to rate actions.
- Read the full format. Our Fast Stream online tests guide covers both tests, scoring and the dates.

What we could not find
We could not find an official description of what the Fast Stream Work Style Questionnaires measured or how they were scored, or an official notice of when they were dropped. If you hold an official document that describes them, the archived pages above are the best evidence we have found for when they were in use.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a work style questionnaire in the Fast Stream for 2027?
Not on the official pages. The Civil Service Careers online-tests page for 2027 entry lists two tests, Work-based scenarios and the Case Study assessment, and no questionnaire.
When did the Fast Stream use a work style questionnaire?
Official Fast Stream pages copied by the Internet Archive on 1 November 2020, 17 April 2021 and 1 June 2023 list Work Style Questionnaires among the online tests. The copy of the online-tests page made on 11 September 2024 lists Using Data, Work-based Scenarios and the Case Study Assessment instead.
What did the Fast Stream work style questionnaire measure?
The archived official pages do not say. They describe the online tests as multiple-choice, not timed, with 5 days to complete them. We could not find an official description of what the questionnaire measured.
Is the Civil Service Work Strengths Test the same as the work style questionnaire?
They have different names, and we could not find an official source saying whether they were the same test. The Work Strengths Test is not listed for the 2027 Fast Stream. Its first part asks how far you agree with statements about your typical behaviour and preferences at work. It then has 10 scenarios to rate and 5 where you choose the most and least likely actions.
How should I answer a work style questionnaire?
GOV.UK advises answering honestly and as you really feel, not second-guessing the right answer, and not responding randomly or using one option, such as the middle response, most of the time. Responses are checked for such patterns.
What online tests does the 2027 Fast Stream have?
The online-tests page for 2027 entry lists two: Work-based scenarios, where you rate how effective actions would be in short video scenarios, and the Case Study assessment, with 7 pieces of background information and 24 situations. Both are untimed, with 7 days to complete them. A video on the application-process page also mentions a Using data assessment, which the online-tests page does not list.
Good luck from all of us
Whatever stage you are at, getting this far takes real effort, and that is worth being proud of. Prepare at a pace that works for you, check the official Civil Service Careers pages for anything that decides your application, and look after yourself along the way. We are wishing you every success.
Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt.
