Checked 27 October 2026. Facts are from Civil Service Careers (Fast Stream pages and the Fast Stream Assessment Centre guide for 2027 entry), the Fast Stream application service and GOV.UK Success Profiles, read on 27 October 2026. The next application window has not been announced. The 6-month plan and the worked example are ours.
Fast Stream online-test results "should be available in December 2026", and every candidate gets feedback, "regardless of whether you are successful", says the online-tests page. Candidates who reach the assessment centre get a second report. Candidates who reach the assessment centre also get a performance report, successful or not. If your result is a no, our suggestion is to use the reports to choose what to practise before you apply again. This guide turns them into a plan. What each report contains is explained in our Fast Stream feedback report guide; this page is about what to do with it.
A note from us
Applying to the Fast Stream is a big step, and there is a lot to take in. We have tried to set out what is published as plainly as we can. Take it one section at a time, and come back whenever it helps.

Can you apply to the Fast Stream again?
| Question | What the official pages say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a limit on applying again? | Nothing we read sets a limit or a waiting period. | Fast Stream pages, read 27 Oct 2026 |
| Can I use my old account? | "If you've applied previously or have an account on Civil Service Jobs, you will need to create a new account to apply this year." | Fast Stream application service |
| Will assessment-centre assessors see my old scores? | The assessors will not "see your application form or previous scores", and each exercise is marked by a different assessor. | FSAC guide, What is assessed |
| Does good feedback mean I would have passed? | No: "It does not indicate whether you will progress to the next stage, as the process is highly competitive." | Online-tests page |
| Can I apply for the Summer Internship instead in the same year? | "You cannot apply for the SIP and a Fast Stream scheme in the same year." | Summer Internship Programme page |
| Can I apply as a civil servant? | Yes, through the in-service route, which also lets serving civil servants apply for 12 schemes without a degree, with four conditions. | Existing civil servants page |
| When is the next window? | Not announced. The 2027-entry window runs from midday 8 October to midday 5 November 2026. | Understanding the application process |
Step 1: save both reports the day they arrive
| Report | Who gets it | What it does (official wording) | How long it stays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online-test feedback | Every candidate, successful or not | "reflect your individual performance", "highlight your strengths", "provide tips to help you develop your performance in the future" | Not published |
| Assessment-centre (FSAC) performance report | Every candidate who attends, successful or not | "feedback on your scores on each exercise, with a description of what a high-performing response looks like, alongside some general development tips" | "removed at the end of May 2027", and cannot be requested after |
The assessment-centre guide tells you to "save or screenshot your feedback report for your personal records". Do the same with the online-test feedback: no retention period is published for it, so our suggestion is to keep your own copy from the first day.
Step 2: read it in three passes (our method)
Three passes, one sitting each
- Pass 1, the facts. Which stage did you reach? Which exercise or test does each comment refer to? Copy every strength and every development tip into a list, word for word.
- Pass 2, the pattern. Mark the tips that repeat or point the same way. Two tips about the same kind of situation count as one area to work on.
- Pass 3, the plan. For each area, write one thing you will practise and one place you will practise it: a job, volunteering, study or practice sets.
Our suggestion. The Fast Stream pages give no method for using the feedback.
Step 3: turn each tip into something to practise
The official pages describe what each stage measures. Matching a tip to the right stage tells you what to practise. The descriptions in the middle column are official; the right-hand column is our suggestion.
| Stage and measure | What it measures (official) | Practise (our suggestion) |
|---|---|---|
| Work-based scenarios (online test) | "This test measures interpersonal skills." You watch short videos and rate how effective actions would be, from Counterproductive to Effective. | Rate actions in work situations, then compare your ratings with a key and note whether your misses lean generous or harsh. |
| Case Study assessment (online test) | "This test assesses your decision-making and your ability to adapt to changing circumstances." 7 pieces of background information, then 24 situations. | Work through a case that changes as you go; after each change, say what is different and why your choice moves. |
| Think (assessment centre) | How you gather, process and analyse information. | Summarise a long document and its data into a short recommendation, with the reason first. |
| Relate (assessment centre) | Your interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. | Explain a decision to someone who disagrees with it, and write down how you took their view into account. |
| Adapt (assessment centre) | Your flexibility and learning agility. | Take on a task new to you and record what you learned and changed. |
| Strive (assessment centre) | Your drive and values. | Keep a log of times you kept going under pressure or held to a standard, with what happened. |
The assessment centre includes three exercises, each marked by a different assessor: the Written Exercise ("review project information and complete written tasks"), the Oral Briefing Exercise ("analyse data and brief a director") and the Personal Development Conversation ("a discussion about your strengths, motivations and your interest in the Fast Stream and Civil Service").
A worked example (invented wording, not a real report)
We hold no real Fast Stream report, so this example is made up to show the method. Suppose a development tip read: "Consider how your actions affect colleagues in other teams before deciding." Pass 1 places it: it is about working with other people, which the Work-based scenarios test measures and the Relate dimension describes. Pass 2 checks whether another tip points the same way. Pass 3 writes the plan: rate one work scenario a week involving another team and note your lean; at work or in study, before a decision that affects others, ask one person from that group for their view, and log what changed.
For job applications in the Civil Service, GOV.UK's Success Profiles list nine behaviours: Seeing the big picture, Changing and improving, Making effective decisions, Leadership, Communicating and influencing, Working together, Developing self and others, Managing a quality service and Delivering at pace. It says recruiting managers choose a selection of behaviours for each role. Our suggestion: where your development work shows a behaviour the advert asks for, at its grade, use it as an example.
The 6-month plan (our plan, April to September 2027)
Six months before an application window that, if the pattern of the last campaign holds, would open in the autumn. That is an assumption: the next window has not been announced. December to March are for saving the reports and for other applications.
| Month | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 2026 to Mar 2027 | Save the reports; read them in three passes. Apply for other routes if you want to (see our guide to graduate routes after a Fast Stream no). | Every tip is on your list with one thing to practise |
| April 2027 | Baseline: re-read the official online-tests page; rate the official Work-based scenarios example; note which way your ratings lean. | You know your lean |
| May 2027 | Work-based scenarios practice, one or two a week. Save the assessment-centre report before the end of May if you had one. | Report saved; your lean is smaller |
| June 2027 | Case Study practice: decisions in a scenario that changes, both answer types (most and least effective, and rating actions). | You can explain why a choice changed |
| July 2027 | Written Exercise practice: read project information and write a recommendation against a clock. | Two timed written pieces done |
| August 2027 | Oral Briefing practice aloud from a data pack; Personal Development Conversation practice on your strengths and motivation. | One recorded briefing reviewed |
| September 2027 | Check scheme eligibility again; watch Civil Service Careers for the window; follow its account instructions (for 2027 entry, previous applicants had to create a new account). | Ready to apply on the first day |
If you reached the assessment centre
Your report is the more detailed one: scores on each exercise and "a description of what a high-performing response looks like". The exercises are independent of each other, and each is marked by a different assessor, so a low score on one exercise points at that exercise. The guide says the assessors will not "see your application form or previous scores" or "know your educational or employment history". Spend more of July and August on the exercise your report scored lowest, and keep the others ticking over.
Use the months for evidence too
Our suggestion: use practice sets for the test formats, and work or study for evidence. Civil Service Careers says you can apply for current Civil Service vacancies "anytime", and serving civil servants can apply for the Fast Stream through the in-service route, where 12 schemes need no degree. The conditions include passing probation before your projected start date. Our guide to graduate routes after a Fast Stream no lists the routes we found on official pages, with their dates.
Dates to put in your calendar
| Date | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | Online-test results "should be available"; you are emailed when they are released | Official |
| November 2026 to February 2027 | Assessment centres run | Official |
| End of May 2027 | Assessment-centre feedback reports removed | Official |
| 6 September or 4 October 2027 | This intake's schemes begin | Official |
| Not announced | The next application window | The 2027-entry window: midday 8 October to midday 5 November 2026 |
Below this guide you can ask us for one email when the next window opens (our service, not an official alert). We check Civil Service Careers by hand, so our email may reach you a day or two after the window opens.
What we could not find
Not on any official page we read on 27 October 2026
- Any limit on how often you can apply, or a waiting period.
- How long the online-test feedback stays available.
- The layout of either report, or an official sample of one.
- The dates of the next application window.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reapply to the Fast Stream after being rejected?
We found no official limit on reapplying and no waiting period. The application service says that if you applied before you need to create a new account to apply this year. The next window has not been announced.
When will the next Fast Stream application window open?
It has not been announced. The window for 2027 entry is midday 8 October to midday 5 November 2026.
How long can I see my Fast Stream feedback report?
The assessment-centre report is removed at the end of May 2027 and cannot be requested after that date. No period is published for the online-test feedback, so save both when they arrive.
Will the assessors see my previous application or scores?
The assessment-centre guide says the assessors will not see your application form or previous scores, and each exercise is marked by a different assessor.
Does positive feedback mean I nearly passed?
The official page says the feedback "does not indicate whether you will progress to the next stage, as the process is highly competitive". Read it as a description of your performance, not a verdict.
What should I do in the months before I reapply?
Our plan: save and read the reports, turn each tip into something to practise, then from April practise the Work-based scenarios, the Case Study, the Written Exercise and the Oral Briefing in turn, and gather evidence from work or study.
Good luck from all of us
Whatever stage you are at, getting this far takes real effort, and that is worth being proud of. Prepare at a pace that works for you, check the official Civil Service Careers pages for anything that decides your application, and look after yourself along the way. We are wishing you every success.
Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt.
