Scenario 1 of 12 · Tests: Working Together

The figure in the minister's box

You are a policy officer working on a joint briefing with a partner team. At noon, Grace, who leads the partner team, sent the finished briefing to the minister's private office. It goes into the minister's box at 5pm, ready for a radio interview tomorrow morning. At 1pm you notice that the paragraph on rural households, which you wrote, still says 120,000 households. Your team corrected that figure to 80,000 last week, and the version Grace sent was taken before the correction. Grace starts two weeks' leave at 2pm today. Her deputy, James, is in the office all afternoon and can send material to private office. Only that one paragraph is affected.

Your task: rate each of the 4 actions, from Counterproductive to Effective. Then see our rating and the reason for each.

Fast Stream Online Tests Pass Mark and Results: What Is PublishedOpen the full article →

Checked 14 October 2026. Results and feedback wording is from the Civil Service Careers online-tests page for 2027 entry, read on 14 October 2026. Last campaign’s wording is from our copy of the same page saved on 28 September 2026. Recruitment figures are the GOV.UK Fast Stream recruitment data for 2024, 2025 and 2026. The comparison with the Civil Service Judgement Test is from GOV.UK guidance read on 14 October 2026. Dates can change during a campaign.

The short answer to “what is the pass mark for the Fast Stream online tests” is that none is published. The official online-tests page for 2027 entry gives no pass mark, no score format and no method for either the Work-based scenarios test or the Case Study assessment. What it does give is a month for results, a promise of feedback, and a warning about how to read that feedback. This guide prints those lines, shows what last campaign’s page said about pass marks, sets out the published recruitment numbers, and explains what happens after the result. Anyone quoting a figure for the pass mark is not quoting an official page.

A note from us

Applying to the Fast Stream is a big step, and there is a lot to take in. We have tried to set out what is published as plainly as we can. Take it one section at a time, and come back whenever it helps.

What the official page says about results

Official wording (2027 entry)What it tells you
“Your results should be available in December 2026. We will email you when they are released.”A month, not a day. “Should” is the page’s own word. The result comes by email.
“You will receive feedback, regardless of whether you are successful.”There is a successful and an unsuccessful outcome, and feedback follows both.
“Your feedback focuses on your performance and potential. It does not indicate whether you will progress to the next stage, as the process is highly competitive.”The feedback is not the result. You cannot work out a pass or a fail from it.
“The tests are untimed, so you can work at your own pace.”Speed is not described as part of the result.
“You will have 7 days to complete the tests from the moment they are made available.”The one hard limit. A test not completed in the 7 days cannot produce a result.

The left column is quoted exactly from the online-tests page as read on 14 October 2026. Those five lines are everything the page says that bears on a result. The words “pass mark”, “score” and “percentile” do not appear on it.

What last campaign’s page said about pass marks

The page for the last campaign did use the words. Our copy saved on 28 September 2026, before the page was rewritten for 2027 entry, carried this sentence about the tests taken in autumn 2025:

“We aim to set final pass marks for the online test pass marks and inform you of the outcome by early December 2025. Candidates will receive their results periodically and not all at the same time – please make sure you check your homepage and email inbox (including spam) for your results.”

Civil Service Careers, Fast Stream online-tests page, last campaign’s wording, as saved by us on 28 September 2026. The repeated words are in the original.

Two things follow from that sentence, and both are our reading. First, pass marks, in the plural, were something the Fast Stream set, to a deadline, after candidates had applied; the page did not announce a figure in advance. Second, results went out in batches, so one candidate hearing before another meant nothing. The page for 2027 entry repeats neither point, so we cannot say the same is true this year. It is the only official text we hold that describes how the marks were arrived at.

The numbers that are published

The Cabinet Office publishes Fast Stream recruitment data on GOV.UK each year. Table 1 gives vacancies, registrations, applications and the number recommended for appointment, by scheme. The 2026 publication has 20 tables. They break the same measures down by scheme, diversity characteristics, ethnic group, socio-economic background, educational background, home location and age, for external and internal applicants, for the Summer Internship Programme, and as time series from 2013. None of the 20 is a table by stage. So the number who passed the online tests is not published, and neither is a pass rate.

2026 intake: from registration to recommendation
Registrations78,407
Applications by first preference69,046
Recommended for appointment703

GOV.UK, Civil Service Fast Stream recruitment data 2026, Table 1, “All schemes” row. The data shows the start and the end of the process and no stage in between.

Measure (Table 1, all schemes)2024 intake2025 intake2026 intake

Applications by first preference44,36272,69169,046
Recommended for appointment986754703
Success rate2.2%1.0%1.0%

The publications define the success rate as the number of applicants recommended for appointment as a proportion of applications by first preference. It is a rate for the whole process, from application to recommendation, and it is not an online-test pass rate. Our arithmetic on the 2026 row: 69,046 minus 703 leaves 68,343 first-preference applications that did not end in a recommendation, across every stage combined. How many of those stopped at the online tests is not published.

Reported, not official: the Institute for Government’s explainer on the Fast Stream describes the assessment centre as the stage for candidates who have reached the required standard in the online tests. It gives no figure for that standard either.

How other Civil Service tests set a pass mark, for comparison

GOV.UK does explain the scoring of the standard Civil Service tests used in ordinary job adverts, such as the Civil Service Judgement Test. That guidance is not about the Fast Stream online tests, and nothing on the Fast Stream pages says the same method is used. It is useful because it shows what an official description of a pass mark looks like when one exists.

PointCivil Service Judgement Test (GOV.UK guidance)Fast Stream online tests (2027 pages)
ScorePresented as a percentile against a representative group of applicants who have taken the testNot described
Minimum standardA minimum required standard for the job level; you get a message if you pass at itNot described
Who sets the pass mark, and whenAfter the test deadline the recruiter looks at all applicant scores to decide the job’s pass mark, considering the impact on protected groups and the number of invitations to the next stageNot described. Last campaign’s page: the aim was to “set final pass marks” by early December
Can it rise? The recruiter may raise the pass mark for the job, and you are told whether you passed at the raised standardNot described
Is meeting the minimum enough?Meeting the minimum is no guarantee of an invitation to continueFeedback “does not indicate whether you will progress”
What you receiveYour score and automatically generated feedback, in your Civil Service Jobs application centreFeedback on your individual performance, strengths and tips

The pattern in the left-hand column, a pass mark decided after the deadline with an eye on how many people go forward, is consistent with last campaign’s Fast Stream sentence about setting final pass marks. That is our observation. It is not an official statement that the Fast Stream works the same way.

When results arrive

StepWhat the official pages say (2027 entry)
You submit the applicationThe window is open from midday 8 October 2026 to midday 5 November 2026.
Tests become availableYou may have to wait a few days. You are emailed when the tests are ready.
You complete both testsWithin 7 days of the moment they are made available. Your applicant homepage shows the deadline.
ResultsShould be available in December 2026. You are emailed when they are released.
Assessment centresThe assessment-centre guide says the centres run from November until February, with sessions daily.

Two official statements sit awkwardly together here, and we print both. The online-tests page says results should be available in December 2026. The assessment-centre guide says the assessment centres run from November until February. The pages do not explain how a centre can run in November if online-test results come in December. One reading is that some candidates are told earlier than December, as last campaign’s “periodically and not all at the same time” would allow; the 2027 pages do not say so. Check your email and your applicant homepage from the day you finish the tests.

What happens next if you pass

Next stepWhoWhat the official pages say
Additional information8 Fast Stream schemes and the House of Parliament schemeA new section appears on your applicant homepage. Questions must be completed within 7 days, and all of them before you can move on. The aim is to assess answers within 2 weeks. No individual feedback.
Assessment centre (FSAC)Everyone who passes the previous stagesOnline, half a day, three exercises: Written Exercise, Oral Briefing Exercise and Personal Development Conversation.
Final Selection BoardSchemes that have oneA specialist assessment for the scheme. For Policy and Digital the assessment centre is the final part of selection.

The stages after the tests each have their own guide here: the assessment centre, and the dated 2027 application timeline. If one of your scheme preferences needs additional information, those questions stand between you and the assessment centre for all your schemes, because every question must be completed before you can progress.

What happens next if you do not pass

What the official pages say, and what they do not

  • You still receive feedback. The page says feedback goes to every candidate regardless of outcome. Save it when it arrives; no retention period is published for it.
  • The online tests cannot be skipped. The reasonable adjustments page says candidates are not able to bypass the online tests.
  • No resit inside the campaign is described. Nothing on the 2027 pages mentions a second attempt.
  • Ordinary Civil Service jobs are a separate route. Their tests are scored and explained on GOV.UK, and a result there is independent of a Fast Stream result.

How to read the feedback itself is covered in our guide to the Fast Stream feedback report.

What we could not find

Not published on any official page we read on 14 October 2026

  • A pass mark, a pass rate or a scoring method for either online test.
  • Whether the two tests are combined into one result.
  • Whether the standard differs by scheme, or by the number of vacancies.
  • The number of candidates who passed the online tests in any year.
  • The day in December 2026 on which results are released, and whether they are released in batches this year.
  • Whether a score, band or percentile is shown to candidates.
  • Any resit or appeal against an online-test result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the pass mark for the Fast Stream online tests?

It is not published. The official online-tests page for 2027 entry gives no pass mark and no scoring method for the Work-based scenarios test or the Case Study assessment.

When do Fast Stream online test results come out for 2027 entry?

The official page says results should be available in December 2026 and that you will be emailed when they are released. It gives no day.

Are Fast Stream pass marks set in advance?

The 2027 page does not say. The page for the last campaign, in our copy saved on 28 September 2026, said the aim was to set final pass marks and inform candidates of the outcome by early December 2025.

How many people pass the Fast Stream online tests?

That number is not published. The GOV.UK recruitment data gives registrations, applications and the number recommended for appointment, with no table by stage. For the 2026 intake there were 69,046 first-preference applications and 703 recommendations.

Does everyone get their Fast Stream results on the same day?

The 2027 page does not say. Last campaign’s page said candidates would receive their results periodically and not all at the same time.

Will my Fast Stream feedback show my score?

The official page does not mention a score. It says the feedback will reflect your individual performance, highlight your strengths and provide tips, and that it does not indicate whether you will progress.

What happens after I pass the Fast Stream online tests?

Some schemes then ask for additional information, to be completed within 7 days. Candidates who pass the previous stages are invited to the Fast Stream Assessment Centre, which is online and lasts half a day.

Is the Fast Stream pass mark the same as the Civil Service Judgement Test pass mark?

They are different tests. GOV.UK explains that the Civil Service Judgement Test gives a percentile and that a recruiter decides a job’s pass mark after the test deadline. No Fast Stream page says the Fast Stream online tests are scored that way.

Good luck from all of us

Whatever stage you are at, getting this far takes real effort, and that is worth being proud of. Prepare at a pace that works for you, check the official Civil Service Careers pages for anything that decides your application, and look after yourself along the way. We are wishing you every success.
