Checked 14 October 2026. All dates are from the Civil Service Careers Fast Stream pages and the Fast Stream Assessment Centre guide for 2027 entry, read on 14 October 2026. Last year’s dates are from our copies saved on 28 September 2026 and a GOV.UK blog post. Where the pages give no date, this guide says so. Dates can be changed by the Fast Stream team.
Applications for the Civil Service Fast Stream for 2027 entry opened at midday on 8 October 2026 and close at midday on 5 November 2026. Those two dates are the only ones most pages repeat. This guide goes through every later stage, gives the official date where one is published and the official wording where none is, and sets them out in one table. Nothing here is estimated from past years unless it is labelled as such.
A note from us
Applying to the Fast Stream is a big step, and there is a lot to take in. We have tried to set out what is published as plainly as we can. Take it one section at a time, and come back whenever it helps.
Civil Service Careers Fast Stream pages for 2027 entry (read 14 October 2026).
The official sentences
- “The application window for 2027 entry is open between midday 8 October 2026 and midday 5 November 2026.”
- “You must apply while the application window is open for entry to the Fast Stream in 2027.”
- The Fast Stream home page and the schemes page both carry the banner “Applications close at midday on 5 November 2026”.
First two lines: the application-process page. Read 14 October 2026. By our count the window is 28 days long, and both dates fall on a Thursday.

Every entry in the middle column is from the page named beside it, read on 14 October 2026. Where the column says no date, we looked for one on that page and on the pages around it and did not find it.
Where am I in the 2027-entry timeline?
The first lines use today’s date on your device and the official window. If your online tests have been released, enter the date you were told they were available to see the 7-day limit.
Midday is treated as UK time, which is our reading; the page gives no time zone. The 7-day figure is the official rule, but the deadline that counts is the one on your applicant homepage.
Before 5 November: what the initial application involves
The initial application is short, which is why some candidates leave it late. The official page lists three steps: register your account, choose your schemes, and provide background information.
| Step | What the official page says |
|---|---|
| Register your account | Use a personal email address, not a work or university one. If you have a Gmail account, the page recommends using it, because successful candidates need a Google account for onboarding. Register only one account: duplicate accounts may lead to your application being withdrawn. |
| Choose your schemes | You can select up to 3 schemes. The schemes page says there are 18 schemes. Check the eligibility criteria of each before you start. |
| Provide background information | This includes some diversity questions, used for monitoring only; they do not affect the outcome. |
| Request reasonable adjustments | Tell the team in your initial application, with as much detail as possible. Adjustments for the assessment centre must be agreed in advance and cannot be put in place on the day. |
The reason not to wait for the last morning is in the next stage. The online tests are not part of the application form. They are released afterwards, and the page warns that the wait can be a few days “especially during busy periods”. The official pages do not say that tests must be finished before the window closes, only that you must apply while it is open. Even so, the days before a deadline are the busy period the page is describing.
Practise the online tests: 12 scenarios in the real format
Original scenarios written to the published four-point scale. Rate each action, then see the reason behind every rating. Start with the free one below.
Stage 1 for all of them: the online tests. 2026 intake, GOV.UK recruitment data.
£31,554 starting salary · earning potential of £45,000 to £55,000 after the scheme (Civil Service Careers).
- 12scenarios
- 48actions to rate
- 24case-study situations
- 72answers explained
Every rating comes with its reason, written against the published four-point scale and the Civil Service Code.

The figure in the minister's box
Read the situation, then rate each of the 4 actions from Counterproductive to Effective. You then see the right rating and the reason for each. About 3 minutes · free · no sign-in.
You are a policy officer working on a joint briefing with a partner team. At noon, Grace, who leads the partner team, sent the finished briefing to the minister's private office. It goes into the minister's box at 5pm, ready for a radio interview tomorrow morning. At 1pm you notice that the paragraph on rural households, which you wrote, still says 120,000 households. Your team corrected that figure to 80,000 last week, and the version Grace sent was taken before the correction. Grace starts two weeks' leave at 2pm today. Her deputy, James, is in the office all afternoon and can send material to private office. Only that one paragraph is affected.

Independent practice material. Not written or endorsed by the Civil Service; the real tests use video and no answer key is published beyond the one worked example. For 2027 entry the real Case Study mixes two answer types; this set practises both: four-point ratings in the scenarios, most and least effective in the case study.
The online tests: the 7-day clock
There are two online tests, Work-based scenarios and the Case study assessment. Both are untimed. What is fixed is the limit for completing them: 7 days “from the moment they are made available”. The clock starts at release, not when you first open a test, and your applicant homepage shows the deadline.
| If your tests are made available on | The 7 days end on (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|
| 9 October 2026 | 16 October 2026 |
| 20 October 2026 | 27 October 2026 |
| 5 November 2026 | 12 November 2026 |
| 9 November 2026 | 16 November 2026 |
The left-hand dates are examples we chose, not official release dates; the page gives none. The right-hand dates are simply seven days later. The last two rows show that a candidate who applies on the final day can still be sitting tests in the second week of November. Our guides to the online tests and to the Case Study assessment cover what the tests contain.
December 2026: results
The online-tests page says “Your results should be available in December 2026. We will email you when they are released.” It gives no day, and the word is “should”. It also says you receive feedback whether or not you are successful.
For comparison, the same page for the last campaign, as we saved it on 28 September 2026, said the team aimed to inform candidates of the outcome “by early December 2025”, and that candidates would receive their results periodically and not all at the same time. The 2027 page does not repeat either statement, so do not assume the first week of December or a single release day.
Additional information: only for some schemes
After the online tests, some schemes ask for an “Additional information” stage, which may include motivational questions and academic details. A new section appears on your applicant homepage. The questions can be answered in any order and must be completed within 7 days. The team aims to assess answers within 2 weeks of submission, and gives no individual feedback at this stage.

That is nine entries. The list we saved on 28 September 2026, before the 2027 pages were published, had ten: it also included Cyber Security. Cyber Security is not on the list for 2027 entry as read on 14 October 2026. The page states that you must complete all questions before you can move to the next stage of your application.
The assessment centre: November to February
The Fast Stream Assessment Centre is a half-day online event with three exercises. The guide’s page on attending says: “We run FSAC sessions daily. The assessment centres run from November until February. We will confirm your specific start and end times in your invitation.” You do not choose the date. The assessment-centre page says a date is assigned to you, and that if you cannot make it you should contact the team immediately; they will try to rearrange but cannot guarantee another slot.
Two official lines that do not fit together neatly
- The online-tests page: “Your results should be available in December 2026.”
- The assessment-centre guide: “The assessment centres run from November until February.”
- You must pass the online tests before being invited to an assessment centre, and the pages do not explain how centres can run in November if results come in December.
- Last year’s page said results were released periodically and not all at the same time, which would allow it. The 2027 page does not say so.
Both sentences were read on official pages on 14 October 2026. We print both and do not resolve them. Our suggestion: plan to be available from November.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| When you apply | Request any reasonable adjustment for the assessment centre in the application form. |
| On invitation | You are given an assigned date; start and end times are confirmed in the invitation. |
| Around 3.30pm, last working day before | A briefing email arrives with the test administrator’s contact details, instructions for sending photo ID and the link to the virtual meeting room. If it has not arrived by 4pm, check junk or spam, then submit a request for help. |
| On the day | Join early. The guide says that if you join late, it is unlikely you will be able to take part. |
| Afterwards | A performance report for every candidate, on the Fast Stream homepage when available. It is removed at the end of May 2027. |
Final Selection Board, offer and start
For most schemes a Final Selection Board follows the assessment centre. No dates are published for these boards. The Final Selection Board page says further details will be available in advance and will be included in the guide linked in your invitation. The same page says there is no board for the Government Policy, Cyber Security or Digital schemes. The assessment-centre guide’s own list differs on Cyber Security; our assessment centre guide prints both lists.
If you are successful, the onboarding team sends a formal job offer, information about pre-employment checks and how you will be placed into your first post. No date is published for offers. The start is fixed: the home page and the starting page both say all schemes begin “on either 6 September or 4 October 2027”, depending on the scheme.
How 2027 entry compares with last year
| Point | 2026 entry (last campaign) | 2027 entry (this campaign) |
|---|---|---|
| Application window | Midday 9 October 2025 to midday 6 November 2025 | Midday 8 October 2026 to midday 5 November 2026 |
| Length of window (our count) | 28 days | 28 days |
| Online tests | 7 days; untimed; guide of about 90 minutes | 7 days; untimed; no length on the online-tests page |
| Results | Aim: outcome “by early December 2025”, released periodically | “Should be available in December 2026” |
| Schemes | 17 listed on the official page | 18 on the official page |
| Start | September or October of the year after applying | 6 September or 4 October 2027 |
Last year’s column is from our copies of the official pages saved on 28 September 2026 and from a Government Science and Engineering blog post on GOV.UK dated 9 October 2025, which gave the same window. It is there to show the pattern, not to predict this year’s unpublished dates. For scale: GOV.UK recruitment data for the 2026 intake records 69,046 first-preference applications for 654 vacancies.
If you miss a date
| Missed | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| The application window | You must apply while the window is open for entry in 2027. No late route is described. |
| The 7-day online-test limit | The pages for 2027 entry describe the 7 days and say nothing about extensions. |
| The 7 days for additional information | Questions “must be completed within 7 days”, and all must be complete before you can move to the next stage. |
| Your assigned assessment-centre date | Contact the team immediately. They will try to rearrange it but cannot guarantee other slots. |
| Joining the assessment centre on time | If you join late, it is unlikely you will be able to take part. |
| Saving your FSAC feedback report | It is removed at the end of May 2027 and cannot be requested after that date. |
| The time limit for a complaint | Complaints are not normally considered if made more than 1 month after the action complained about. |

What we could not find
Not published on any official page we read on 14 October 2026
- A release date for the online tests, or a statement of how many days “a few days” is.
- The day in December 2026 on which results are released, or whether they are released in batches this year.
- First and last dates for the assessment centres beyond “from November until February”.
- Any dates for Final Selection Boards or for job offers.
- Which schemes start on 6 September 2027 and which on 4 October 2027.
- A time zone for “midday”. We read it as UK time.
- Whether any deadline can be extended.
- An application fee: no page mentions one, and no page says applying is free.
